An Outsider's Opinion: Storyline and Alliances

This is a mini-series of articles that act as a sort of interview with an "Outsider" or someone who has never played any Elder Scrolls games. I wanted an unbiased, untainted opinion so I sought after one! This little experiment will hopefully shed some light on what new players are thinking when they check out TESO. I'm showing this Outsider a slew of pictures, videos and information and asking them a series of questions pertaining to what they saw.
This is the second of four topics which are as follows:
1) Characters and Graphics Progression
2) Storyline and Alliances
3) Cinematic Trailers and Gameplay
4) TESO in General
First, I will link all of the articles the Outsider read so those who are curious can check them out too. Basically, it's the entire Game Guide on the Elder Scrolls Online official site.
The Story: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/game-guide/story
The Alliance War: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/game-gu...liance-war
Daggerfall Covenant: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/game-gu...l-covenant
Ebonheart Pact: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/game-gu...heart-pact
Aldmeri Dominion: http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/game-gu...i-dominion
The Outsider was then asked a few questions, feel free to answer them yourselves in the comment section below.
Q. Is the story comprehensible? Is it intriguing?
A. “Yes to both. It is rather intriguing. I want to know more. I do understand what’s going on, absolutely. Or at least the gist of it. It’s a lot of information though for someone who doesn’t know anything, like me. To be honest it feels like taking a child from their home and dropping them in a foreign place with new rules and laws and policies. It's exciting but confusing.”
Q. Are you ever one to truly get immersed within a story? Could you see yourself getting immersed into this one?
A. “Absolutely. I find the concept of the supernatural interesting so that’s pretty cool. Adding the fantasy side of the game into the supernatural really peaks my interest. It’s something I want to explore more.”
Q. From what you’ve gathered, who is Molag Bal?
A. “He is the ruler of the dark side, haha! More or less, the lead antagonist of the story.”
Q. Does one alliance seem considerably stronger or weaker? Why?
A. “Actually, they all seem fairly evenly matched in my eyes. I can’t immediately say ‘oh this is the one that’s going to take it all.’ They’ve given them all magic and what not so it seems like fair game.”
Q. Which alliance would you play?
A. (The outsider gave this a considerable amount of thought) “I would probably play the Ebonheart pact. It’s something against the High Elves who I don’t like. They seem snooty (you're making a lot of DC's and EP's happy there!) and the Breton king looks like he was just placed there. The Ebonheart Pact seems more democratic and that appeals to me.”
I then showed the Outsider the map found on the Elder scrolls Online site.
Q. What do you think of the map? Are all the alliances on relatively fair ground in your opinion?
A. “Daggerfall seems like it has less land than everybody else. I can see it though, because when you look at the races, the terrain seems harsher than the others so they are more athletic and can withstand things like that. I guess they spaced them out well enough and everything is equal.”
Q. Is PVP an exciting concept for you?
A. “Yeah, it seems like it would be a challenging experience since you can chose to be on your own as a low level or team up with a group of people and fight side by side. This one in particular looks a little intimidating at first but I’d be willing to try.”
Q. What of the ultimate goal? Would you strive to become emperor or just be content being part of the war?
A. “In truth I’m not hugely competitive. I think it would be satisfying to be part of the guild or group which helped a player in becoming emperor. Either way it would be fun to play.”
At the end of this portion of the interview, the Outsider said:
"See, I think I'd rather be a wood elf but I just hate the Queen of the Aldmeri Dominion."
The Outsider obviously had some trouble gripping the story, as they said it was confusing or intimidating. What struck me personally as odd was how little they absorbed of Molag Bal and who he is. For those who play the games, Molag Bal is a big name and a bigger power yet to a newbie, he's nothing more than some letters printed on a page. As well, I found it humorous that even someone with no Elder Scrolls knowledge could pinpoint the High Elves arrogance.
Next week, look for this Outsider's opinion on the cinematic trailers and gameplay videos.
