I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Argonian names and their meanings or if there is a site with some information on the language or names. I could not find much on uesp or the imperial library.

If you're looking to name your Argonian, your best bet would be to take a look at the list of Argonian names from past games.

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Argonians

Argonian names generally fall into one of two categories: a Saxhleel language name, or a hyphenated name in the Common Tongue, probably translated from the original.

The only name I ever recall is Hide-his-Eyes from morrowind but there's something with argonians having a second name like hides-his-eyes was Haj-Ei, my unproffesional guess is that argonian names are loosely based on native american names, like the infamous sitting bull would perhaps be somewhat like warms-his-steed or shuns-his-feet, just a guess tho

they are more descriptive names, like some nord last names.

Haj-Ei is Jel for Hides-his-eyes wich made the fact quite rediculous that he was employed to hunt down an escaped slave, himself!

To me Argonian names always sounded a bit too normal. Seems like their mouth is more similar to the men and mer then it looks on the first view.

If Argonian Snouts, mouths, jaws or wathever would be more reptilian their language and names should contain more hissing and growling and should be impossible to pronounce by the other races. I mean they have a split-up toungue! Something like Ssrkhrsechu (snakerace from another Fantasy World). But I guess people would make such names more simple like Skrechu. Maybe Argonian would introduce themself with such easy an "normal" names so that their counterpart is capable of pronouncing the name.

So maybe in the deepest Blackmarch we could find hissing and growling lizard guys having names like Hz´rhss´Lrzh or Cha´zchrlh`horthzt.
And we just meet "Ja´reh´rah" and "Gulum´ei" guys.

as far as i know, the argonians of black marsh have a language called Jel.
and it is not understandable for outsiders, at least not in its complex form. there are some words outsiders can learn.
Jel however is extremeley hard to understand for outsiders because it has no perception of time.
Argonians have usually around 3 different names. one in jel that only an argonian could understand, usually some strange animal sound. then a translated one. usually something like gulum-ei and then there is the even more translated verison like "hides-his-eyes"
what exactly the names of deerketus and vareeza are, we dont know.

I wish very much that Jel was a language with a full dictionary. But regardless I'll be Nist Oisi.

well, you couldnt pronounce proper jel anyway. and it would be confusing as the sentance structure has no meaning of time. basically you couldnt translate a sentance in that language without heavily butchering it.

I also would like to learn more Jel. Its something that we all know exists, but as for much more than what's been described by Sordak here there really isn't anything. I want more.

I will admit though the name Voren comes from what I named my cloud serpent in WoW. I really like that name and I think it kinda fits an Argonian.

Voren doesn´t sound very Argonian, but Dunmerish. Simply say you are a former slave and your masters gave you this name.

That could work rather well. I am still working on my character's backstory, so I haven't gotten all the kinks worked out yet. I may yet change my name.

for more informations.
go read the argonian compendium you should find the link in this thread http://www.imperial-library.info/content...compendium
It also gives some nice description of Stormhold, made by bethesdas main argonian guy, its in a forum RP but still.

For more informations of Jel. look at the lore notes of Lord of Souls. http://www.imperial-library.info/content...lore-notes
It mentions a few argonian cursewords and a few more details on it. Have fun!
