In most games I play or know, mages are restricted to only light armour, but I'm reading a lot about battle mages etc in regards to the Elder Scrolls, could someone key me in whether armour level has any effect on magic?

Usage of magic won´t be restricted by using armor. They said somewhen there will be starter classes, but I don´t know if it´s still like that. If you start as mage, you won´t have perks making armor more effective. If you´re a warrior you haven´t the perks for magic talents. But I don´t know if that´s true anymore.

I can imagine some spells, like stone flesh, a spell giving you a magical armor will be less effective if you already wear armor, like in Skyrim.

But I also can imagine light armor giving you a bonus in Stamina restoration, heavy armor in Health restoration and Robes in Magicka restoration. But that´s just a thought, that´s a system that I know.

Any person can wear any armor and use any weapon, you just get more "skill" or finesse with them the more you use them. light 2handed, heavy archer or mage, battle mage with 2handed and medium armor whatever you want

Remember that we don't have specifics, yet. All we know is that they said you're free to experiment with what you want. We don't know anything about effectiveness with respect to class/armor combination or how much of that statement is just PR. We know nothing about how perk trees affect armor as well.

Id be way too tempted to make a stealthy fighter that wears heavy armor and dishes out massive nuke damage.
But id imagine they would have the heavy armor counter the use of stealth like in skyrim, there would be too many over powered combinations and might end up with PvP god mode characters.

It would be nice to find out how far we can push the boundaries of customization.

I have a feeling the boundaries will be set quite high. The best aspect of the ES games is the customization/immersion of your character. So for them to come out with a cookie cutter type of play style would be a big fail on ZOS part.

I agree completely, they never made a previous ES game multiplayer because of the risk of damage the single player experience, and given every single ES game you make your own character and do as you wish.

I dont expect the customization you get in character physical appearance that you get in Skyrim, have to remember fitting 100 players on the screen at once, loading all the little detail would be a major PC destroyer.
And perhaps not the skill set and play style customization of Morrowind.

So ill be very happy with a medium between the two. However a combination of both would melt me to my chair. Not even joking.

What I'm hoping to see is a balance between all armor levels and magic. If someone decides to be a heavy spell caster, I believe they shouldn't be any less spell efficient compared to a robed caster. However perhaps the heavy spell caster could be penalized elsewhere to make up for the fact that they have higher defense. Perhaps lowering casting time for the heavier armored mages could be an option.

the difference will be simmilar to skyrim. if you wear a robe you regenerate more mana, allowing you to cast more.
and since enchanting will be balanced this time around. Im pretty sure a Heavy armoured mage would be as crippled as it would make sense. But of course hed have the benefit of beeing tankier. Its a descision one has to make.

Also depending on the way they implement it armor-rating enhancing spells may be more powerfull when wearing clothes and again depending on the way they do thing unarmored skill may be available(I hope so).

Battlemages are destructionmagic orientated mages which has them lacking in alteration, therefore relying on heavy armor for protection since armor-rating enhancing spells would be less beneficial and also cost more mana for them.
And mages tend to be terrible at sneaking around so light armor doesn't make a lot of sence for them, they prefer to specialize rather than trying to keep balanced. Well that is how I see it.

Do we know if they will be keeping with the encumbrance system?
Weight of heavy armor affecting the walk speed, could be lethal in certain situations, say a rogue who cannot escape a defensive warrior because the warrior is more fine tuned to that armor and can move more efficiently in it.

Also depends on spells implemented they may add the encumber spell from previous titles, though I have no idea.

dont think so realy.
But we know that boosting your stamina will give you increased run speed. And id say that stamina might regenerate itself faster when you wear medium armor.

I hope they put the encumbrance system in the game as well. I think this game is basically handed plenty of opportunities where the best option is to be as realistic as possible (magic aside, of course). Hopefully, we get a well balanced, fairly bounded, decent customization. I'm willing to make a few compromises as a great series goes MMO (I know a lot of it just can't be helped), but I hope that they try to keep things fairly open.
