Character Creation - How important is it to you? What would you like to see?

One of the most important aspects to an MMORPG, and yet so many do such a lackluster job of getting it right.
What you create here will be the representation of yourself – individualization; in-depth customization is fairly paramount to make the game immersive. When mishandled, bad CC design does the exact opposite and works to break immersion and player connection to their character.
Too many MMORPG’s make the following mistakes:
-MANY options, too many of which make the most minor changes thus they are essentially a waste
-Too FEW options, making everyone feel like clones
-Grouped facial customization options, where one aspect such as ‘Eyebrows’ are tied to another aspect that should e completely different, such as facial hair.

To this day, the best character creation I’ve seen has been from APB which even includes a tattoo creator. Check it out here:

Now I'm not saying TESO's CC needs to be that powerful... but... wouldn't it be nice?

One thing most MMO's don't do at all, but I would LOVE to see in TESO is the questions you are asked that help define your character a la Morrowind. For a lot of people, I think that step makes it much easier to get a sense of who their character is.

What are things you'd like to see in TESO'S character creator and how important is the CC to you?

Character Creation is pretty important to me. Wouldn't call it an deal breaker though if it sucked. Having the options like what was in Skyrim would be fine. Even if it was one default face with several ways to fine tune it to have it look how one wanted it would be perfectly fine with me.

I would like to see a Skyrim type CC aswell. I spend forever trying to make my character look like I want him to, and it will be pretty disappointing If I can't get a lot of control over it.

I like having choices so character creation is pretty important to me. While I won't spend hours at it, I have been known to delete characters and remake them over and over until I'm satisfied they are how I want them to be. Because they never quite look exactly like they do in the character creation system as they do in the game world.

I really like having different choices about how my character may set itself apart from others, I don't usually spend hours in character creation, but a good 20-30 minutes at least. I hope there will be plenty of different skin colours, markings, hair-styles and body types at least.

I can spend a good few hours making my character, with MMOs that have hard hitting story lines at their core you need something in place that will make each character seperate from everyone else.

Character creation is something that makes your character unique, the more customization, the more unique it feels, you can truly immerse yourself into making your character. That character is going to be you, through thick and thin, and if he doesn't look exactly how you want it to, that's a bit of a let down.

Just because the Dunmer that we've seen look like garbage, I hope its a pretty intricate system.

I'm annoyed at ZoS making grey skinned, red eyed warriors look like purple WoW Night Elf casters.

Yeah I've messed with quite a few character creation that have this particular example and I'm not a fan at all. Eyebrow types linked to eye color or certain eyebrows available in one hair color only is pretty lame.

I spend more time than I should in character creation. I would say up to an hour depending on the options available for the game.

Essensial. I like to create a character the way I imagine it, so I would like to see many customization options. If I'm going to play with a character hours after hours I want to see a character that I really like. I've always been very critical on how my characters look, in both Skyrim and Oblivion I spend A LOT of time making my character and actually really enjoyed it. So many customization options please!

In two words: madly important. I love being able to make something realistic and unique, both of those are equally important. Without realism, you can have really expanded creators, but you'll end up running around people who made midgets with pink hair (anyone who has played Aion for only a little while knows what I mean). Ending up with a character that looks as close to reality as can be, with quirks and flaws like we all have them. Those are the best. I remember how AoC's creator was a huge deal five years ago. It's starting to become a bit dated now, but even though it isn't perfect, I do love how realistic the characters look in that game.

As for options, I like as many as I can get. Give me loads of hairstyles (and please make hair move realistically, I don't want another game where hair is a helmet xD), loads of face- and warpaint available, and sliders to make your character as much in shape (or not) as you like.

One of my main pet peeves is how most creators do not allow longer hairstyles. Hair is always shoulder-length at most and it just makes me a sad panda. A lot of creators suffer as well from a case of "there are 10 faces available to you but only two of those look remotely okay so no one will use the other 8 and everyone still ends up looking the same that way". I hope ZOS won't make that mistake.

I agree with the first poster, APB really has one of the best character creations. As for me the character creation is pretty important too, at first you may be glad just to start playing and stuff but the moment will come when you'd love to change a lot of things in your char appearance, it's not fully similar but I'd say it's like creating Orc fighter when you first see the game and abandon it just because you found out that sorcerer is better for your play style. Anyway about the specifics of char creation my opinion is that it can be as specific as it wants, but... I must see effect of change of every little aspect while creating. I don't like when there are 3 million different colors of skin (or hair) in char creation screen and only 5-6 of them are visible for human eyes.

I have a very clear image of what I want my character to look like in my head and I hope they have a good CC so I can make that image reality (sort of).
