Character models and creation

I'm posting this here because a thread in the EP-section sort of ended up being a discussion concerning the current character models on TESO, and character creation in general.

With the release of the latest video, we could get another good glimpse of how the current models look, how they run, swing swords and cast spells. Some people are pleased, some not so much.

What do you think of the current models, and what are the things you would personally love to see in a creator? And what are the things you definitely do not want?

To get a better look at models, simply watch the trailer, or click here.

I just want the models to react better when fighting looks just like Vangaurd MMO . I don't mind the look at all.

Some of the swinging was a little floaty and nothingish, then again I'm probably spoiled after GW2 in that regard. Running was typical for MMOs, reminded me a bit of Oblivion and less of Skyrims 'Weight' when a character jogs. Sprinting wasn't much of a sprint.

Models, as we've discussed, look purposefully removed from photorealism, stylised towards a blend of realistic yet without being overdetailed, so maintaining a relatively uncluttered aesthetic. Sometimes people stand in that annoying Draenei 'my armpits are made out of obsidian' pose, sometimes they fold their arms like a badass Riften guard. Argonians seem to be closer to Morrowind with a more barbaric base rather than the 'human beings with pinata tails and halloween mask' approach of Oblivion, and the 'lizard bros' of Skyrim.

What I want to see eventually is the ability to make varied and unique looking characters, with scars, facepaints, head and facial hairs, and enough of them that it isn't a case of there being three 'good' faces/hairs and the rest nobody uses.

Also I like how the female character models aren't big booty hoebags with breasts that threaten to escape the mortal realm, that's always a plus.

Good that there is a post to sum it up.

They are absoulteley one hundret percent atrocious.

The Nords have no proper beards and are way too skinny, the dark elves have too light skin and not sharp enaugh faces.
The Racial armors look too exagrated to make sense. the nord helmets ALL have the same horns (this could be a WIP thing, but everything discussed here is) the Argonian armors consist 100% of scales and the robes just look bad. The only armor that realy looked any cool to me was the redguard one.

To further elaborate on the Character models. all of the shown have been realy scrawny, somehting i dont like on my characters, its something i canot relate too.
The faces all look like babyfaces, especialy on the Nord wich is rather suprising. Also the lack of beards is harrowing. Just these realy short beards and probably some goates are not enaugh at all. Also the lack of any barbaric looking hairstyles for the nord baffles me greatly.
Nothing there looks even simmilar to the nord in the promotional material (my avatar basically)

The Argonians looks like they are made of plastic. Take the Gorn add a few edges and here you go. Its not that they are ugly, its that they dont look like Lizards , they actually dont look like anyhting. They have a more native american theme going on but why do they have to have noses? They never had noses. And why is the head of the females shaped like this, also why is it oversized? Its like twice the size it should be.

The we get to the dunmer, why do they have human skin colours? To the point that you cannot distinguish them from the nord. They also do not have characteristic enaugh faces. Dunmer always had realy sharp, pointy faces. why is that not in the design philosophy?
Actually in the whole coverage, we have not seen a single dunmer with the proper gray skin colour.
It should be noted that any skin colour other than gray STRICTLY disaproves with the lore that is the very FOUNDATION of both their race and their culture.

The thing that irks me the most at the moment is that I could not get a proper look at anything but the Argonians (and -mer, to a degree). As soon as you, indeed, spotted the horns, you could assume that was a Nord inside that helmet, but apart from the occasional angle I have seen no proper human shots (other than that one guy who indeed didn't look exactly rugged, like you'd expect). And no female close-ups at all ._.

I suppose their models are very much WIP, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. I understand their approach concerning aesthetics, but I'd still love to see realism in my characters, a real being rather than a cartoon. I'm also a sucker for detail - give me a bucketload of hairstyles, face paints, scars, and tattoos. In a massive game, you want to stand out. Also, as Vrage said - I sincerely hope there will be many cool options, so you don't end up in this "There were 40 hairstyles but most people use 4 and 5 because the rest looks retarded"-universe. That's such a shame.

I just want to mention the things that annoy me the most, which are the armors and the hunched-back combat pose.

There were in total only 2 armors I rather liked: The brown leather armor and the blade-ish imperial armor. All the others look pretty much identical. Every armor looks like its made of leather (which in the case of the leather armor seems appropriate), you simply can't tell by looking at it what material its supposed to be made of. The styles are all a variation of dark-base-color-with-bright-trim, and the argonian scale material looks simply muddy and ... no. The one species where I would expect some more colorful clothing, and they make them all grey. Also, why does every armor need to have a loincloth?
I can't believe it would have been enormously difficult to make a simple iron or steel armor with the same poly-count.

The problem is, although this is still an alpha version, I don't see them redesigning the armors a whole lot. Character proportions, face textures and details, argonian appearnce - those are most likely still going to get tweaked here and there. But it's obvious there already went quite a lot of work into the armors.
I can just hope they add better ones later on.

I just went through the new trailer on 1080p and made screenies where I could of various models and armour. I wish I could get shots that are more crisp, but this will have to do for now. I'll add the album to the OP as well :)

Character models.

the hunched back combat pose would make sense, if they would hold the swords correclty.

As for the armor the chainmail annoys me more. why are there chainmail pants. those dont exist.

EDIT: I just spotted a forsworn weapon in that screenshot. looks like they make a return.

Also the argonian heavy armor doesnt look half bad. but seriously look at those dunmer. they are white. what the FUCK. seriously its probably just zenimax telling them "hey, let them go legolas, theyll totaly love that!"

I'm not even sure those are Dunmer. I mean, everything was clearly staged in this demo, I'm sure there were some Bosmer and Bretons in there, and I may have even seen an Orc.

But skincolor would seem quite easy to fix.

the thing is that they probably wont fix it. and yess im fairly sure its dunmer.

even if it was bosmer. NO elf in the TES universe has a caucasian skin colour. Dunmer Grey, altmer Yellow and Bosmer brown. that just doesnt exist in TES.

BUT THAT MAKES NO SENSE ZENIMAX.

Also I really think the elves you're seeing are Bosmer, and they're less Caucasian and more of a... ruddy tan thing, yeah admittedly a bit too pink but :|

The dunmer I've seen in these trailers have all been some colour of grey/dark blue/pale ash.

you must look closer. also forsworn do make sense, the witchmen of high rock have been there for a loooong time.

EDIT [Image: hSmmIh.jpg] im almost 100% sure thats supposed to be a dunmer

[Image: IwmoMh.jpg] same as these fellows (the two in the back)

[Image: QSCkBh.jpg] same for these, as you can see, only the guy on the far left has an acceptable (lore wise) skin colour for a dunmer. Also their clothes do not match dunmer culture.

Can't have said it much better than Sordak.

The Nords look like tall and skinny 12 year old boys with watermelon heads. Slightly exaggerated ofcourse but it ain't really nice to look at.

Secondly, the armors seem very shiny and new. Nothing is ragged or worn or whatever. And why does nearly everly shield contain an oversized sapphire or emereld in the center? Is it pretty? No, not at all.
