Comparing Skyrim with Scandinavian Nature

*Before I start: This is a topic/post which I have wanted to make for a long time, but never had the energy or time to do so. However, I was just looking at Google Earth pictures of Scandinavia, and this gave me some new energy. Even if you disagree with what I'm saying here, you might just enjoy the pictures. I'm not trying to imply something with this topic, just point out the similarities for your entertainment, so here we go:

As you may know, the Nords of Skyrim have many similarities with Scandinavian culture/history, and it's commonly accepted that the Nords have been heavily inspired by the Vikings (both real and stereotypical vikings). I could so a comparison between the two groups, but today I'm going to talk about the nature of their homelands: Skyrim and Scandinavia.

Skyrim is separated into 9 holds, and each of the nine holds seems to have it's own climate. I'm going to compare each hold with a Scandinavian region (regions of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland)

Whiterun - Northern Sweden

Whiterun Hold is mostly a vast tundra with some rivers and mountains. Northern Sweden (a.k.a. Norrland) has tundra as well. (I'll let the pictures do the speaking here)

Falkreath Hold - Northern and Central Sweden / Finland

Falkreath Hold is covered with deep forests of pine trees and conifers. Both Sweden and Finland is full of such forests, and it is one of our main tourist-attractions (at least in Sweden because we have deep forests and everyone have the right by law to explore the forests, and especially Germans love that). According to my old teacher, Sweden and Finland are the two countries that have the most forests in all of Europe (in % of the area)

The Rift - Southern Sweden / Denmark

The Rift is covered with leaf forests. In Scandinavia, Leaf forests are more common in the south: Denmark and southern Sweden

The Reach / Haafingar - Norway
The Reach and Haafingar are areas that consists of fjords and mountains. Norway is famous for their fjords.

The Pale / Winterhold - Norway / Sweden
The Pale and Winterhold are cold areas that border to the sea. I'd say that these areas are more similar to Norway, but since the Pale has forests I took the liberty of comparing it to Sweden (I'm not saying that Norwat doesn't have forests though).

Eastmarch - Iceland
Both Eastmarch and Iceland are volcanic regions. The Europeans here may remember a few years back when the volcanic eruption in Iceland delayed pretty much all flight traffic in Europe.

Hjaalmarch - (Mixed Scandinavia)

(This region would be compared to marches all around Scandinavia. I'm going to do that comparison later)

I knew you would say that, and yes, Austria looks beautiful too .

I'm not saying that there are no similarities with other countries, I'm just comparing and saying that all the environments can be found within Scandinavia. Not because any of the environments are exclusive for Scandinavia or anything, I'm just pointing out that culture isn't the only thing Skyrim and (ancient) Scandinavia has in common.

You might actually say that Nords are Germanic in nature (Obviously mostly inspired by us Norse), while other people such as Imperials are Latin in nature (With strong similarities to the Roman Empire).

But hey, beautiful pictures. :D

More or less, yepp, the obviously have some real life inspirations when it comes to the (human) races. I think I'm going to make another thread at some point where I discuss the similarities between Nords and Germanic (mostly Norse) people/culture. :)

And if you liked the pictures, take a look at Google Earth's pictures. Most (or at least about 50%) of these pictures where taken from there (for example, the first picture of the Swedish tundra) :)

It's beautiful but I cant say that Sweden/the North are the best.
Swedens politics and people stink most of the time (yes I'm a swede).

But the country is beautiful.

Beautiful pictures, all of them, it makes me once again envious of many people who live in such scenic countries ._. I think Skyrim's many sights could be based on equally as many places around the world - mountains in Austria, Sweden, Norway, Finland, forests in Canada, waterfalls in New Zealand.... There isn't really one to pick, they clearly got their inspiration from more than one place, and good on them, because they made a game we all love :)

Oh - such gorgeous scenery!! I have favorited this thread so i can come back and enjoy it many times & I will probably make some of the photos wintertime screenshots for my office monitor screen.

I agree that Skyrim used a mix of Nordic/Germanic places for their landscape. To me the ancient peoples that the Nord of Skyrim most equate to are the Vikings. If there ever were real life Dragons .. or perhaps late-era Dinosaurs ... I think it would have been the Vikings who'd take them on. Hmmm, wonder what Nessie in Loch Ness actually is? But that is Scottish,
who were probably originally Vikings who crossed the North Sea and bred with the native Celt.

At any rate, Skyrim & Scandinavia are both eye-poppingly beautiful; albeit too frigid for me who walks on warm sands in Florida.

well of all things. Nords are not vikings. They dont have longships, they dont have vikings, they do not use any of the vikings iconic weapons (the sax, the throwing spear or the throwing axe) they dont use the vikings iconic helmet or the iconic shields. The nords are very much inspired by germanic people, just not vikings.
Also in Morrowind they were scottish. Both in accent and facepaint.

It should also be made clear that "viking" was never a nationality. Viking was an occupation. and only a temporal one. Young men would go on "viking" and plunder, and then they would settle down and become farmers. Or they would conquer new lands and settle down there.
