You don't see MMOs on consoles why is that, would a console be at a disadvantage over a PC?

Do you think having a MMO like ESO on the console would be a bad thing?

Would you be apposed to playing ESO with console players?

it would be great to have the viability to play it using and xbox or ps3 controller. so that it wouldn't be much of a shock to the console community of eso.

I think I read somewhere that they may release it later for consoles. I don't remember where and I don't have a link.

I think that there is a big difference in the player base between PC gamers and Console gamers. I find that a lot of the people on Xbox Live tend to be more immature than most players that I find on the PC games that I have played online.

I have no preference in playing RPGs on either PC or Consoles. I have played Skyrim on Xbox and PC and I like both equally.

I don't know why put I would prefer to play a mmo on a pc then a console, if you put it on pc and consoles I don't think you get a balanced amount of players on each.

MMOs are normally on PC/Mac because the interfaces are designed for them. If they make a console-friendly interface, I'd be overjoyed to play it on my Xbox.

By arrow. By blade.
By tooth. By claw.
By shock. By frost. By flame.
The Aldmeri Dominion will dominate Tamriel.
Our enemies will fall until the Throne is ours.

ESO wouldn't be viable on current-generation consoles. For a console to be able to hold 200+ players on the screen at once takes much more than what our current systems can do. I've seen arguments about consoles not being viable because the controllers wouldn't work for the amount of buttons you need - which is honestly a little ridiculous, and isn't the reason ESO won't be on consoles.

There are indeed MMOs on consoles, but take a look at them - they aren't groundbreaking or all that great.

To answer your three questions, however:

Quote:...would a console be at a disadvantage over a PC?

Other than the hardware? If current-gen consoles could run this game just as well as a PC, no, I don't believe there would be any disadvantages. A lack of a keyboard might be seen as one, but that's mostly for communication purposes.

Quote:Do you think having a MMO like ESO on the console would be a bad thing?

No, I don't think it would be a bad thing. Just something that can't happen. It may be possible on the next-gen consoles though.

Quote:Would you be apposed to playing ESO with console players?

Not at all, no. I don't believe that certain gamers are more mature or better to play with. I've had plenty of great console experiences, as well as PC.

There was a game called Shadowrun, The only game to feature Cross platform compatibility, 2 months after release online gameplay was patched and relinquished the feature due to the over dominating PC players.

Not that controllers are bad, I prefer playing Skyrim on my Xbox, but they dont belong with/against keyboards/mice. there are too many disadvantages with it.

That being said, If they had console vs console, ie PS3 and Xbox servers together, Hell yea thatd be sick.

i highly doubt it and i tell you it wouldnt work properly.
First of all. Xbox live is a terrible system to get an MMORPG running on, just to name it as an example, and the only MMORPGs that have worked on consoles are either the asian ones where they dont mock about with compatibility and a very much stripped down version of everquest.

And anything you need a keyboard for, as a console game, is best left at the PC.

Q: The game currently is for PC and Mac and you've said you want it to run on laptops, so you're designing it to run on low-spec machines as well, but has there been any consideration at all given to the console world? There aren't too many MMOs on consoles, though SOE has tried to push it on PS3. The Elder Scrolls franchise has many fans on Xbox 360 and PS3, so were there ever any discussions on getting the game on Xbox Live, for example?

Matt Firor: That is a very long answer, as there are a lot of rumors swirling around the next-gen coming back together with PCs. I haven't seen any of that, but I read all the rumor sites just like everyone else. It seems like things are going back to a more standard platform. That being said, we haven't thought about it heavily right now. The worst thing you can do is worry about new platforms while in development. We want to do what we're doing right now and then look around for further opportunities. Certainly we're open to new opportunities, and we're going to be looking into new territories beyond North America and Europe.

Q: So hypothetically speaking, would you keep the console universe connected to the other players? Would it be the same game?

Matt Firor: We would have no idea; we'd have to look at the technology. That's a technology question because we obviously would want it to be the same community. The main reason for previous titles is because the technology has not been there. I can't speculate.

Q: Why do you think it is that we don't see successful MMOs on consoles? It's been the realm of PC for a long time now, but console players want to play, right? Is it the game balancing, the mechanics or the hardware? Why have we not seen it?

Matt Firor: It's the classic desk vs. couch argument, but it is blurring over time. The current-gen and previous-gen MMOs were all about using the keyboard and mouse, and sure, everyone used things like Ventrilo and other voice chat services, but that only works in a small group. A lot of that has been thanks to design problems that people haven't focused on a lot, such as typing and controlling at the same time.
The 360, when announced was a pretty ridiculously cool device, but it is not so good anymore compared to PCs and even when it was announced PCs were still better than it. The technology was a little limiting for the size and scope of the world you could have. It mostly comes down to PCs being wide open. Online game development is all about doing whatever you want, pushing limitations, and it's just easier to do on an open platform. Someday, it may all change.

Hm... I hadn't though about communication issues. I'm typing this on my Xbox; it's already a pain in my ass withought a game going simultaneously.

I personally think its a bad idea to put MMOs on a console. The ever changing nature of an MMO would mean the console's harddrive would have to have 10 to 30 GB worth of its storage dedicated to the MMO you're playing, let alone if you wanted to play multiple MMOs at once. You can't just put the game on a disc and keep it that way. It'd get outdated very very quickly. On a PC where everything is installed to your harddrive anyway its not a big deal to spend upwards of 30 GB on a single game.

I miss the days when all a console did was play games. No harddrives, no GUI, no movies, no internet. That's the way a console should be imho. ^_^

I like Rage's answer quoting Matt Firor. He is saying that they are not ruling it out in the future, if the new-gen consoles get developed to handle open world-mmorpg's. But right now those consoles can't. But he is certainly not commiting himself to any positive answer concerning console play since he said the worst thing would be to speculate about future platforms now while they are developing TESO. They are concentrating on the here and now; I guess the future will take care of itself.

If console play of TESO ever becomes possible it will be the console companies who change their products to make it doable.

TESO - - Multiplayer: "M'aiq does not know this word. You wish others to help you in your quest? Coward! If you must, search for the Argonian Im-Leet, or perhaps the big Nord, Rolf the Uber. They will certainly wish to join you." M'aiq the Liar.

On the topic of MMOs on consoles, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that there IS an MMO for the PS3. DC Universe Online. Seems pretty okay all in all. But I do agree with Tecca, a project like ESO is definitely not viable on any current gen consoles.
