Getting started with Arena (questions)

I just downloaded Arena to my tiny laptop, and amazingly, it seems to work fine. I have only seen parts of the prologue yet because I stopped and ate dinner so I wouldn't be disturbed when I start.

However, before I begin I need to ask some questions:

1. Is there any way to make the game screen big or do I have to live with a small screen with my desktop behind it? I'm playing on a tiny monitor as it is, so any way to make the screen larger for maximum imersion would be appreciated

2. In the DOSBox, is there any way to make the the DOSBox remember how to start Arena or do I have to type in the codes every time?

3. Is there some way to save in the game so that the next time I start I can continue where I left it? If not, how do I save?

There should be a menu option for 1 and 3, but you can repeat the last command used in DOS by pressing the up arrow or F3.

Ok, and thanks! And by the way, how am I supposed to get out of the dungeon? I started the game and played, went west then south, found a stream of water and followed it, but I died from exhaustion before reaching the exit.

What am I doing wrong?

If you're dying of exhaustion, that means you've let your stamina drop to zero. Keep an eye on the red bar near your portrait at the bottom of the screen; if that starts to get low (or if any of them get low, although the blue one, magicka, is safe as long as you don't need to cast spells in the near future), try to find a raised platform and rest.

This is kind of complex, but I think you should be able to follow along:
NOTE: These instructions are for Windows. If you are using another operating system, I'm afraid I can't help you.

1. Open your DOSBox options; save this as something like "Arena.conf" in your DOSBox folder (the .conf part is the important one, you can name the file whatever you want). If your DOSBox is installed in Program Files and you're using a recent version of Windows, this file might get shoved into Virtual Store; do the following step and the beginning of step 3 there and copy the file back once you're finished with it.

2. Open that .conf file, and make the following changes:
-Find the "cycles" option, set that to "fixed (number)"; the number is whatever you can get the game to run at best, I use 15000 but your computer may require something else.

-Go down to the very bottom and find [autoexec]. Under that, put:

@Echo off
mount c [path to just BEFORE your Arena folder; mine is, for instance, "c:\dosgames". It's recommended this shouldn't just be your main hard drive.]
c:
cd arena
arena
exit

(This is assuming you installed the game in a folder called "Arena", of course. Change as necessary. The last line should cause DOSBox to exit as soon as you leave the game, though it might not; that's a minor thing if it doesn't anyway.)

3. Save that file, then create a shortcut on your desktop. Have the shortcut link to DOSBox, and name it "Arena" or whatever.

4. Open the shortcut's properties, go to the Shortcut tab, and go to the very end of the Target line. Add "-conf Arena.conf" (or whatever the .conf file you made is called) there.

5. If you can find a good icon for the game, that would be a good idea to change too.

6. Double-click the shortcut and the game should run!

I hope I got all that right. <_< I don't think I missed anything...

Thanks for all the help! But a raised platform, how will I identify a raised platform (is there something special about how they look or what?)? Is there some other way to avoid exhaustion? And from my description, am I going the right way?

They're, well, raised, as in higher up off the ground than the rest of the floor, any place like that is safe to rest on (won't help if there's already an enemy nearby, but it will keep new ones from attacking you in your sleep). For an example from that very dungeon:

(As you can see from my health I REALLY need one there. :p )

If you can find a spell/magic item with a stamina restoring effect, those can help too. As for the direction, if my memory serves you are indeed on the right track.

You're writing batch files now? And I actually almost believed your fake blondiness on the spec thread. I feel all deceived now...

You're assuming I came up with that myself. I'm not above taking credit for the work of others, after all. ^.^ Or at least spreading the help when I can. (Besides, I'm a brunette, I just happen to have regular blonde moments. ;) )

OH, ok! But how did you get that sword? There was a pile of stuff when I opened the cell door, but when I clicked on the it I only got 6 pieces of gold.

And by the way, somebody on the Bethesda forums said you could increase the frame rate. How do I do that?

Yay, you've gotten your game to run! But maybe you're experiencing slowdown? How do you fix this? With the following commands:
CTRL+F7 = Decreases frameskip
CTRL+F8 = Increases Frameskip
CTRL+F11 = Slows down the game
CTRL+F12 = Speeds up the game
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Task Manager, and click the Performance tab. Start by pressing CTRL+F12 until your CPU Usage level begins to go above 95%. After that, if you still need a performance boost, hit CTRL+F8 to have DOSBox not render some frames. The console window will display all of the changes you've made, and the top of the game window will display the current settings. Adjust these settings as needed until your game goes smoothly. Please keep in mind that not all games will run smoothly on DOSBox.

You have to explore the dungeon to find more items. I'd suggest exploring it fully and leave it not before level 4. And try to leave during day time, the mobs that wander the streets at night can be tough in the beginning.

Ok, I will try that later.

But I tried to activate spell-mode but nothing happened. Could it be because I don't know any spells for the moment or what? And I chose battlemage as my class, that's a melee/magic hybrid class right?

You have to select a spell first. You should have at least a few, like lightheal, I think. Try clicking the magic button (this sparkly thingy in your toolbar at the bottom of the screen) and your spells should show an be selectable from the list on the bottom right.

http://www.svatopluk.com/arena/manual/ really helpful, as not all things are as intuitive in Arena as we'd expect these days.
