How important is Race?

I want my character to be focused almost entirely on magic but I'm struggling to figure out which race would be best for me.
Does it really make much difference which race I am in the grand scheme of things?
How important is race to you, when it comes to the abilities aspect of ESO?

There are a few small bonuses for races, but it it small enough to be negligle in favour of your choice. I'd say play the race/class combo you want, won't make enough impact in the end.

Personally am playing a class/race combo that wouldn't be the 'best' in terms of passive. I'd agree with Loge here and say play what you'd like.

Which class/race combo are you playing?

TBH race doesn't matter too much at all. I think your tactics and combat strategies in-game will be your key to success or failure.

Have a look here,

http://skillcalc.massyx.de

This should give you a better idea as to best combinations. I would rather play with my friends in the same faction(s) than worry about if i'm the correct race n what not. Hope it helps.

Originally it was going to be a Bosmer/Templar but I'm going down the healing path.

With the Imperial edition I'm picking up as the Imperial race/healer though.

Race to me is fairly important as I don't like to play the 'Common/Popular' racial in any MMO...In my case I've chosen to play as an Imperial....However as I mentioned on another thread with the racials yet to be announced it may be that when they are a flock of players change their minds as it may fit with their ultimate end game build ideas....

Lore-wise an Altmer, is best for pure-mages.
In-game, racial choice doesn't really matter as the passives are only tiny buffs.

I'm still amazed that after so many years of tes people haven't learned that race really doesn't matter all that much in terms of playstyle... It's all down to you, that's why tes is so great.

For my experience so far in mmorpg's racials don't really matter especially at end game content.I hope its the same in Elder scrolls.Even if racials do matter i ignore them cause i prefer playing the race i like than min/max my character. That being said i would play my elf even if it was the worst choice.

Race doesn't matter. You cannot go wrong even with a Nord Sorcerer, Dark Magic with Light armour and staff.

Nor with an Breton Sorcerer, Lighting Magic with heavy/medium armour and 2h weapon.

Is always down to how your char wants to look, and what you want to play.
As said on another discussion, the only choice that is bad, is a Nightblade with Light armour and staff.

I suspect passive abilities will matter more in the beginning where even small bonuses help out; and then not matter all or very little toward 'end game'.

Why is this choice so bad?

I found the passives lackluster really. You have to invest in them to use them (except the first rank of the first passive), so if you pick a race with passives that don't work towards your class than you can just invest into something else. All classes have class specific passives you can invest into anyway. I'm sure that there could be a best min-max build with race in mind, but I don't think it'll make much difference.
