Recently on the TESO Facebook page, they posted a video which asked the fans of the game about which type of monsters they would like to see in game that have appeared in previous TES titles such as Skyrim and Morrowind. This topic sort of relates but regardless of that,

Do you guys think that it would be a good idea to put in rare creatures that one would have to hunt for in the game? Knowing that the game will have a crafting system, it would be very cool to have to hunt down rare creatures in order to take their pelts or nails or whatever part of their body and create that item that you've been waiting to create.

I'm going to be a rogue Wood Elf and it would be pretty fun to be hunting through the forests of Valenwood for a rare species of a bird who's feathers can create [Insert item here].

Interesting idea... kind of like boss mobs that spawn randomly (or not so randomly I guess) in the wild. I'd definitely be on board with this... it would also be a great way for people who don't craft to make money, by selling the rare feathers on the auction house/bazaar/whatever system TESO will have.

Yes that is a great idea. You could make it a huge fight (boss), or you could go with an innocent animal waiting to be killed (Merely a hunt, no fight). Or you could make it an animal that has an ability that makes it extremely hard to catch. One would have to be experienced to catch one easily. It could be made into some sort of profession: Hunter
Whichever way is okay. And yes it is true, most people can benefit through this and make good coin without actually crafting.

The only thing that really disappointed me when I started playing Skyrim was the lack of alien monsters. There were wolves and foxes and deer running around. I was kind of hoping for some of the really weird wildlife like in Morrowind. So I'd have to say that while I want the monsters to fit the area, I also want them to be things you wouldn't necessarily find in real life. I hope they take a bit more of an artistic approach when dotting the landscapes of High Rock and Hammerfel with monsters.

Maybe if you were in an area littered with wolves... every once in a while you'd find a werewolf? We'll probably both be lit up by people that'd rather stick to lore (not that that's a bad thing!) but I agree with you!

Yes, this is true. Since I'm part of the AD I wonder what type of animals/monsters I'll be seeing. We are made of three never before seen provinces so I hope it was worth choosing this side! :P

I'm all for rare spawns. But they need to be well done and be worthwhile (proper rewards, etc). They also don't have to be animals -- e.g. they could be a roving rare bandit group, an infamous merc, etc. There's a lot they can do.

There is a HUGE world of possibilities for micro rewards of strange monsters, or not monsters too, maybe a butterfly that goes around an especific forest and is unique and very rarely to see, and with the wings of it you can make an special potion or even put them in you profile as a achievement, very unique achievement.

Rare spawns would be a good source of rare crafting mats/patterns, now that I think about it.

That would be pretty interesting to do. They could balance out the amount of people in an area with the mega server as well, allowing a specific amount of people in an area, limiting the Rares gained. It could be helpful for guilds to send out hunting parties as well.
