I recently had the opportunity to interview a YouTuber by the name of MrRhexx and get his opinions on all things Elder Scrolls and Elder Scrolls Online. MrRhexx tends to dabble in Let's Plays, Machinima, lore videos, and mod reviews! He earned his popularity through epic Skyrim videos and his humorous nature, but actually started by creating videos about games like Dead Island and Age of Conan in 2011. As of the publication of this article, his main channel has 136,762 subscribers and an accumulative 40,206,623 views. Needless to say, he is knowledgeable on many fronts in terms of gaming and the gaming community. He actually has two channels full of gaming action which will both be linked at the bottom of the interview for your convenience.
Rhexx and His Channel
Q.To start things off, let's learn a bit about you and your channels. Where are you from, and where do you currently live?
A. "I was born and raised in Panama city, Panama, then lived about three years in Sweden which is where I got my Business degree. Then back to Panama, then Germany, then back in Panama." So You've been everywhere? "I've been everywhere. Haha! That's the nice thing about YouTube is that you can do it anywhere as long as you have the internet."
Q. Where's the best place to live in your opinion?
A. "See, Panama's great because that's where my friends and family are. So there's that. But then again, Sweden is beautiful - not just everywhere but everyone! However, you see, with my job, the internet is important, and the internet here in Panama is pretty bad. So, I would say that's the biggest improvement that the internet in Sweden and Europe, in general, is really, really good."
Q. Other than YouTube and The Elder Scrolls, what are your hobbies?
A. "Oh jeez, this is going to sound really sad, but when it comes down to different things, it's just different games. I used to be a big soccer buff, but after I moved to Sweden... it's not as big of a deal over there as it is here. So, I kind of lost touch, and it's also too cold to play over there! To be honest, it's mostly gaming at this point, but I love reading about Skyrim lore."
Q. Why the name "MrRhexx"?
A. "Ok, well, there's this character in Warcraft called Rexxar, and he had this pet called Misha... he's not really a popular character. I always had some kind of connection with him. Nothing hardcore or anything, I just liked the name. Since then, that was the name I would always use whenever I played any RPG's. So, when I went to make my channel, that was the name I went with. Although, The problem was that that name had already been taken. YouTube told me to try "MrRhexx", and I thought it was kinda funny so I just. . kinda. . went for it."
Q. Was there a specific goal you had in kind for either channel when you started? Have you reached it?
A. "Well, most YouTubers... they started out doing it as a hobby. I started because I really wanted to make a living out of it. I've always wanted a career in gaming, and that's all I have ever really wanted to do. In fact, the only reason I went to business school is because I wanted to be able to be a badass businessman and hire someone to do my work so I could just play video games. That was my goal from the get go so I gave it a shot." Obviously you've made it, then. "Yes, I reached it about three months after I started. It all came as a surprise. I really wasn't expecting it to be that fast."
Q. Is there another YouTuber who inspired you? If so, who?
A. "There's this huge group in the YouTuber Call of Duty Community. I'm talking about Woodysgamertag, Wingsofredemption and FpS kyle. I don't know, that's when I really started watching YouTube videos because I got really into Call of Duty, and I obviously went in for tips and tactics and found those YouTube channels. That's actually when I found out that you could do it for money, way back, a whole year before I started. They were the guys who actually started putting videos on Machinima, and I think they were pretty much my motivation for that."
Q. What sort of videos do you believe are the most fun to make?
A. "Oh, Let's Plays for sure. They're the most fun. I have a very lazy nature, haha! I usually go with the things that are just easier to do, especially since the things like Machinimas, as those things take weeks to do, and it's excruciating work to edit those. It's always nice to do them, and they're probably my favorites looking back, but just pure enjoyment wise, I'd say Let's Plays."
Q. Do you see yourself making videos in the future?
A. "Oh absolutely, a lot of YouTubers say this is just a transition to something like movie-making, but for me this is what I always wanted to do. I just wanted to play video games and talk about my experience playing those video games."
Q. What sort of things do you hope to accomplish for your channel or in general in the future?
A. "Near future, I would say that I would like to at least be doing two videos a week. Possibly something like the lore videos but maybe other games than Skyrim. I mean, Skyrim will definitely be the priority or the primary game, but I'm looking to expand to other games and I think the lore series will allow me to do that very well. Long run, I would say Let's Plays. I think that is by far the one thing I would like to accomplish: to have a successful Let's Play channel." So that's where RhexxPlays comes in? "Exactly, that's the deal."
The Elder Scrolls
Q. What games from the elder scrolls series have you played?
A. "I have played Oblivion and Skyrim, I haven't played Morrowind, Daggerfall, or Arena though." So you've played both Skyrim and Oblivion to fruition? "Yeah, I haven't done the Oblivion DLC's though. It makes me feel kind of bad that I haven't, but the thing is that whenever I play by myself I know people want to see me play them so I think I should do a Let's Play of it instead."
Q. Which game did you start out with?
A. "Oblivion. I was more into MMORPG's when it came out, so I didn't even know it existed until much later. When I had it given to me, I don't know, it was just one of those things that just clicks and I loved it."
Q. Do you have a favorite? Why?
A. "Definitely Skyrim. I mean, it's tricky, you know? There's things from each game that I think are definitely better. The thing about Skyrim is that I got really into Elder Scrolls in Skyrim. Like, when I played Oblivion, it was just a game for me. It wasn't anything else. Then Skyrim - it just became something else entirely. For some reason everyone was talking about it, everyone was playing it... it was exploding, and I felt like I was part of this 'Skyrim Movement.' So, I would say that that's my favorite. I would say that there is a feel to Oblivion that I think Skyrim just couldn't get. The Imperial City, maybe? In Skyrim, the big cities like Solitude didn't quite feel as big as they should."
Q. Would you change anything about it?
A. "The cities. I definitely would make them bigger. One thing that I would change which would require, like, a huge revamp. I would like for enemies to give me experience. I think it lacks a certain drive to explore and kill things. I could go out and kill a band of giants, for example. Sure, it would feel good that I managed to defeat them, and sure there's treasure for me, but the amount of experience I get from killing giants is the same as I'd get from a pack of wolves. It just doesn't feel as rewarding. I like to see that huge number that says "Plus 500 Experience!" on top of every enemy." So, you look for that classic MMO experience? "Exactly, and I would like that if they were ever to find a way to do that."
Q. On your main channel, you do a lot of lore videos like "Skyrim Lore: Dwemer Secrets!". Where do you get your information?
A. "Most of my information I get from the Wikis. Sometimes I spend days just reading about random stuff just to get that inspiration. Sometimes I'll be playing Skyrim and be passing through The Rift, and I'll just be like, "I wonder what happened here," you know? What kind of stories can be told from this place? I'll be reading one page after another and then, suddenly, I'm reading about the Gods. That's something I love doing, and I know people out there love it as well but don't have the time so I just tell it."
Q. Skyrim obviously shows up a lot on both of your channels. How many hours in game do you think you have accumulated?
A. I have 204 hours on Steam, but I spent the first eight months of me playing on my friends account so I couldn't even tell you... It's probably triple that."
Q. What do you think makes Nirn so interesting?
A. "I think it's just the fact that there are stories everywhere, and that makes it not feel empty, which is a big reason why I love MMORPG's because there are people everywhere and things happening. This is why I think a lot of games can't compete with Skyrim. Say that you're playing Dishonored (which is also from Bethesda), and you're looking around in a town, and the game shows you the way and tells you the story but to be honest, outside of the story there really isn't much else. What you see is what you get. The game tells you a story and then you have to go do a quest to talk to a character and that character tells you a story and there's so much that's not being shown. I think that's what's so interesting about Nirn. There's so much stuff, and it pushes me to figure it out."
Q. If Bethesda were to make another single player Elder Scrolls title, which province would you hope to see it based in?
A. "I think it would be Elswyer. Either Elswyer or Black Marsh I think. Because, you see, I haven't played Arena and I haven't played Daggerfall, and I know Daggerfall was in High Rock. I would like to see High Rock again in the way they did Skyrim but not right after Skyrim. I think it would be too similar. So, I would definitely go with Elswyer. I think they could do so much with the Khajiit's and the way that they live. I would say Black Marsh, but only the Argonians can really survive there. Everyone else gets poisoned."
The Elder Scrolls Online
Q. First things first, will you be playing?
A. "Oh, yes definitely. I think that will be part of the channel as well, playing The Elder scrolls Online. I mean, I told you before, I'm a huge MMORPG fan. That's a big thing for me, so I'm really looking forward to it. The other thing, though, is that it seems like people just don't know how to make MMO's anymore. I've had a lot of disappointments, a LOT of disappointments. Including the Star Wars MMO, I just didn't like it at all."
Q. Have you been following the development updates?
A. "Not at all. I have been cutting myself off from it as much as possible. I probably shouldn't, but I just don't want to read anything discouraging. I just want to be able to get into the game with open eyes."
Q. What sort of character will you/would you play?
A. "I think I would go with the Argonians with the Nords and Dark Elves as that alliance seems like the coolest one. I think there is the most potential there in terms of coolness value. I don't know if it's the best, but coolness-wise, definitely!" Well you're not alone, Ebonheart has a huge following on a lot of the forums. "Oh really? Well then I'm not going to get hated, alright! Haha!"
Q. What do you think of the newly released Character Creation video? Is there one race which stands out as the best or worst?
A. "Again, I would say the Argonians because I like how different you can make them. I mean, there's only so much you can do for a human. I mean the guy specified how we get the option to make them look fat if we wanted to... which I guess is nice, haha! I would still say the Argonian. You can make the most changes with the horns and frills. The Nord seems to be the worst, just because it's a standard thing."
Q. Have you played other MMO's? Which?
A. "I've done Ragnarok Online, I've done WoW obviously, Guild Wars 2, Guild Wars 1 - I was a huge Guild wars 1 fan. Let's see, I've done Age of Conan, Warhammer, 40,000, I've tried multiple free ones. If it's popular, I've played it."
Q. Do you have a favorite? Why?
A. "Retroactively, I would say Guild Wars 1. Well, the one I've played the most was WoW so I guess that's my top but just based on fun I would say guild wars 1."
Q. Will you be involved in PvP?
A. "That's the biggest reason why I loved Guild Wars - player versus player keeps me hooked. So, yes I will absolutely be doing PvP."
Q. Would you strive to become Emperor?
A. "Haha! Is that a thing in the game? I should! Yeah, sure!"
Q. So, I guess I'll see you on the battlefield?
A. "For sure, yeah!"
There it is, all in black and white, an interview with MrRhexx. It is obvious that he has a vast amount of knowledge in regards to the games he plays and an even greater passion for them.
