Introduction

Prison Break is an experimental CYOA (Choose your own Adventure) style mini RPG set in the Elder Scrolls Universe. The rules are very much subject of change and i am currently working on its execution. However i feel that it is time to release this thread on this Forum as i have been wanting to do this for a long time.

So what is it all about? 6 Players from this Forum will be manouvering through a tile based maze to find their way to freedom. On their way they will be facing countless Monstorsities from the elder scrolls universe. While also be constantly on the run for their very lives.

Story

The Story of Prison Break details the trials of 6 more or less guilty criminals fleeing form Imprisonment in Argonia. After the Convicts found a secret tunnel below their Cells they enter a mazelike Dungeon filled with dangerous Creatures.
All of this while still beeing bound together in chains.
However this is not their only Problem. The Guards are after them, and they will stop at nothing to bring them back to their Cells. Dead or Alive.

Who are our Heroes?

The Players can pick between 10 different Charater classes representing each of the Settings Races. However dispite them having very different Atributes and perks, they all can use any equipment they come around.
However they are hardly heroes, they are regular Convicts that are on their last chance of freedom.

The Gods are Bribeable

This Game is decidet to end if one of two conditions is fulfilled. Either the Party exits the Maze or are either beeing slaughtered or brought back by the Guards. The Aproaching of the Guards is determined by so called "Edge Points". If these reach Zero the Party will encounter the Guards, however they do have a last chance of Fighting them to hold them off, but not for long.

The situation seems dire, however, the Gods themselves are bribeable.
Every Character can have one reroll. This will be automatically used if an enemy would kill him, however every Player can use his reroll whenever he wants.
New rerolls will be rewardet to players that roleplay believably and entertainingly.

The Rules so far

I am still testing most of the rules, items and Monster encounters. Here i will just give you a quick look at the basic rules so you can see what you can expect from the very basic but entertaining Combat system that makes up the bulk of my Homebrew RPG.

RULE SET

1.0 CORE RULES

1.1 THE ABILITIES

Abilities are based on the Characters and, unless stated otherwise, do not change throughout the Game.

- Combat: Minimum 2 Determines wether or not you hit in combat. a regular attack will cost 1 Stamina. Rolling a d6 under your Combat Skill will cause the attack to hit.
- Destruction: Minumum 2 Determines the likeleyness of a Destruction Spell to succeed. Rolling under your stat will cause the spell to succeed.
- Stealth: Minimum 2 Determines wether or not you succeed to sneak past an enemy. When you aproach a combat situation. Any Character may attempt to sneak past the foes. If he succeeds the combat is skipped and you are awardet 1 edge point. If you fail the enemy party will get the first strike in the combat.
- Alchemy: Minimum 2 Determines the likeley ness of brewing a potion. Any Character can spend a Rest Turn to search for a Potion. If he rolls under his Alchemy skill he will be awardet one random potion from the Potion Roll Table.
- Block: Minimum 2 Determines wether or not you can deflect an incoming attack. If an enemy Combat roll succeeds the struck Character can make a Block roll. If he succeeds, and this contradicts no additional rule the attackw ill be deflected.
- Restoration: Minimum 2 Determines wether or not a Restoration spell succeeds or not. Rolling under your Restoration stat will cause the spell to succeed.
- Pickpocketing: Minimum 2 If you have successfully sneaked past an enemy, any character can attempt to pickpocket the foe. If you roll under your pickpocket skill you will be awardet a random item from its loot table. If you fail combat will start as if you have failed your stealth test.
- Marksmanship: Minimum 2 Determines wether or not to hit with a ranged weapon. If your Character is using a ranged weapon, before making a Combat throw. You will have to make a Marksman throw to determine wether or not you actually hit your target. Attempting to hit an enemy on the second combat row will add +1 to that roll.

1.2 THE BASE ATRIBUTES

Every Character starts out with the same base Atributes. Every time a Character levels up, he can increase one of the following Atributes.

- Health: (Base 2) If your Characters health drops below 0 he is knocked out. If the whole partys health drops below 0 the game is over. Health can be regenerated through resting for one turn.
- Stamina: (Base 2) Stamina is used for most actions of your Character, Stamina regenerates fully every turn. Stamina is also used for the "Evade" manouver. Whenever an enemy combat roll succeeds and this does not contradict with any other rule your enemy can make an evade attempt. If you roll a d6 under your current Stamina the attack will be evadet. This will cost as much stamina as your die roll.
- Magicka: (Base 2) Magicka is used to cast spells. Magicka is regenerated by 1 every turn. Both in and outside of Combat. It is fully recovered by resting.

1.3 ADDITIONAL ATRIBUTES

- Edge Points: (Base 5) As you try to escape your imprisonment the Guards will be chasing you. When your edge points are reduced to 0 you will encounter them. You cannot flee from the guards. Resting a turn will decrease your edge points by 1.
- Rerolls: (Limit 1) You can have one Reroll on your Character. It will automatically be spent on a blow that would kill your Character. However you can choose to use this reroll on anything you want, as long as it does not contradict any other rule. Reroll points are generated by the Game Master and given out for Roleplaying feats.

1.3 EQUIPMENT

Any Character is, unless stated otherwise, allowed to equip the following Items: 2 Weapons (some weapons may use both weapon slots)
1 Piece of Armor
1 Utility Item
3 Spellbooks
Items can come in different flavours.

1.4 NOTEABLE EQUIPMENT RULES

Ranged Weapons: Ranged weapons will allow you to stand in the second row of combat. Any Character palced in the second Combat row cannot be, unless stated otherwise, targeted by a melee attack as long as there are Characters in the front row. Characters using ranged weapons will have, additionaly to their Combat throw make another hit throw on their Marksmanship Atribute .
Spears: Most spears allow your Character to decide wether or not to stand in the second row of combat. If your Character decides so he can freely attack the front row of combat with a +1 on his hit throw. A Character equipped with a spear located in the front row can also attack a Character in the enemy second row with a +1 to his hit roll.
Shields: Shields allow you to reroll your Block attempt However they do count as a one handet Weapon.
Dual wielding: A Character that is Dual Wielding melee weapons can use a Dual Strike. This will cost as much as one Attack, however this Character will be unable to block for this round.

1.5 MANEUVERS

Characters can perform numerous Maneuvers in and out of Combat. This is a list of the most basic Maneuvers that all Playable Characters can use. For more advanced Meneuvers look at the specific items, Character traits and Perks. Keep in mind that most of these Maneuvers can be combined with most types of Equipment.

- Attack: This is your basic Attack. In order to attack, you have to pick a valid target and make a Combat Role. If you roll under your Combat Roll you will hit your target. Regular Attacks deal 1 Damage and cost 1 stamina.
- Block: Any Character that has been successfully attacked can make, as long as no rule prevents it, make a block roll. If said Character rolls under his Block rating the attack will be deflected.
- Power Attack: A power attack is a much more powerfull attack. it will require 2 Stamina. The other rules apply as they would to a regular attack however a Power Attack deals 2 damage instead of 1. Certain rules might have effects on the usefullness of power attacks.
- Ranged Attack: Any Character wielding a Ranged weapon can make a Ranged Attack. a ranged attack will require a Marksmanship roll before you can make a Combat roll. The most basic Ranged attack does 1 damage. This may change due to the weapon used. Characters in the second row can be attacked with a ranged weapon. This will however add +1 to your Marksmanship roll.
- Sneak Attack: before entering Combat any Character can attempt a sneak attack. In order to use a sneak Attack a Character has to perform a successfull sneak roll and then a regular Combat Check. Unless stated otherwise a Sneak attack will deal double the damage of a regular attack. A fumbled Stealth check will initiate combat with the enemy gaining first strike. Keep in mind that some weapons and perks enable sneak attacks to be performed on enemies in the second combat row.
- Sneak by: when faced with an enemy, any Character might attempt to sneak past. In order to do this this Character has to perform a Stealth roll. If he succeeds the party sneaks past the enemy, avoiding combat and gaining 1 edge point. If the roll is fumbled combat will be initiated with the enemy gaining first strike.
- Cast Spell: any Character with an equipped spell can cast a Spell on his turn. He will have to perform a check on said Spells Skill (Destruction or Restoration) and pay the mana cost for the spell. The mana will also be spent if the spell fizzles. Keep in mind that most spells have no target restriction and cost no stamina.
- Pickpocket: when the party successfully sneaks past an enemy any Character of the party can attempt to pickpocket an item from the enemy. This will require a Pickpocket check. If the Character succeeds an item of the Enemies loot table will be addet to his equipment. If he fails combat will be initiated with the enemy gaining first strike.
- Dual Attack: Any Character dual wielding Weapons can use a Dual Attack at the cost of a regular Attack. However this Character will no longer be able to block in this turn. Remember that the special rules of the weapons sitll apply, shields cannot be used in a dual strike.

The Dungeon

The Dungeon Map is designed by me, it is based on Squares and will feature a diverse envirement that is still based on a simple concept to make it easy to pick up and moving around it not tiring. The map will of course not be revealed however Players are encouraged to draw their own ideas of the map in order to use them to avoid going in circles.

The Heroes

I am still wroking out the details on the Atributes and the Characteristics of the Classes. This section will give you a brief overview of what you can expect. More details on the Classes will be released in not too much time.

The Nord Brawler:

This is the worst hangover ever! One Moment you are heading to your favorite Tavern in Bruma with your Shield brothers, the next moment you are beeing trialed for murder. Like its your fault that Milk drinker said something about your sister, a Draugr and your Mothers wedding dress. that only happened once!

The Dunmer Deviant:

By Azura! I swear i didnt know she was dead!

The Breton Minstrel

Aperently making proposals to the Duke of Chorolls Fiancee was not the best decision you made in your life!

The Bosmer Tracker

I was just honoring the Dead! There is nothing wrong about that!

The Altmer Graduate

Listen, i am very sorry about this buffoons barn, but can you imagine what insights of the Destructive magics this can give us? No you probably cant, peasant! What do you mean Guilty? Do you even know who i am? Wait! No! You cannot do this to me! If the Thalmor embassy hears of this! This will cost you your head!

The Players

You might see that this is not done. However i need you, to give me advice on the design and the balance of this game. Hopefully also while playing it. While the beginning of the first Campaign is still in the (hopefully near) future. You can of course comment on it and apply if you wish to.

In order to get a Game of this running i will need 6 of you. Generally we will wait for every Player to make his statement. Moves will be determined democratically, while in combat everyone will have to plan his own steps.
It will be called a pass if a player does not answer for a long period of time.

Im stoked for this. And this is the first CYOA i do, but i made the rules for this up myself. I originally wanted to do this on a German board but i decidet to roll my first try of this here. Ive been thinking about this for quite a while but i got myself to do most of it recently. I hope i have the support of this forums and even moreso i hope that it will be as entertaining for you as it is for me.
For every RPG runs on its players.

Mind you this is not only a story telling Module. But it is about winning. You might loose but thats part of the fun. I will try to be fair about the dice rolls (i will handle them in real life) and you will get your fair rerolls.

I will also hope i can get this going in a reasonable timeframe. Naturally when i got alot to do on the univeristy or other stuff i wont get to administrate this.

So here you go. I finally got this out. I originally wanted to wait till i get everything done but i just didnt want to wait any longer to bring this out.

I mean, it's a good idea.
Dunno why no one ever replied to it :/
Maybe there weren't many RPish people on TESOF at the time.

I like that it is semi-D&D ish, but with simpler rules; like World of Darkness, everything in that game is done with 5d6

And the premise looks like it will forcibly keep moving forward, rather than stay stale. That would be a real boon for a RP.

yeah.
If some of your folks get yer asses up and help me develop this thing we could pull it off.
The prime problem is enemy balancing.

the idea is to have clear enemy patterns from a dice table.
Randomized enemy squads create imbalance.
the thing is i want this thing to be hard. But i dont want it to be over fast or frustrating.
In other words i dont think i can pull it off by myself without either making it too easy or beeing over after 2 turns and you beeing eaten by a figurative grue.

I'm interested but I still kinda don't grab the concept here I blame my English skill so can someone explain this a bit better. Sorry Sordak but your English is too complex for me. Do we use dice?

@Sordak dont chew me a new one.. But from my understanding, it's akin to Dungeons and Dragons but a bit simpler and with other twists. Everything will be based on a dice roll, which Sordak will handle in real life. So those participating don't need their own dice.

Edit: As for the specific rules and mechanics.. Take it up with the big man because I would'nt want to relay false info, as I myself have never played DnD so I'm not totally sure.

Yes we use dice. d6 refers to a 6 sidet (regular) dice in nerdpseak.
And no its not based on DnD, i have never actually played that game. I blame the fact that im a closet geek on it.
So i never got around it.

That beeing said, our system is actually alot closer to Warhammer than it is to DnD by that i mean we usually use a 6 sidet dice in wich 2 dice rolls of either party are compared.

Also your skills, that are capped at 6 do not, under regular circumstances, change. Only your TES specific resources (health, magicka, stamina) change over time.

So most checks in this game work like that.
You want to cast a destruction spell and got a destruction skill of 4.
That means if you roll a 1 a 2 or a 3 you will be able to cast. If you roll above it you fail.
