They stated, that you have to give your character a both ... a first name and a last name., but .... there are a lot of races out there, which, according to the lore, do not have a last name.

How will you solve stat problem? Will you then give your chacater a kind of nickname as the last name?

In many mmorpg the 2nd name is usually quite versatile in altering which I think leaves it open to abuse. I have seen some fairly ridiculous 2nd names on role play servers and hope the "lore police" are effective/efficient in TESO. Of course I am sure there will be monitoring of first names which is essential to a game of this calibre.

Can you expand on which races would not take a 2nd (family) name?

Nicknames are a good alternative and perhaps earning them as part of the game play would be an interesting game mechanic. It works well in LOTRo with 100's of titles which can be unlocked.

We had a discussion about this somewhere in the TESO General Discussion section, and this seemed like a pretty big problem since half of the races don't have last names. But according to MMORPG.com, last names are optional.

That reminds me of something ... I wanted to search this forum with your search function on the top at the right side, but this does not work for me (I wanted to search for a special keyword)... I cannot enter any text in it. You can also remove this post if the problem is solved :)

It should work if you click on it and then try to type. If not, use this link (it's much better anyway): http://www.tesof.com/search.php

I'll be removing the search bar in favor of the advanced search in the near future.

Your link works quite well but the normal search bar does not ... at least for me.

Guild Wars 2's naming system would work great for this game, I think.

Not entirely related to the OP's concern, but related to naming characters in games. For the last 12-14 or so years, in every game where it has been possible I've had character names Terwox Dragonfist.(yeah I know not the most original, but I make do with it.) He's sort off my alter ego. But for TESO, I have a little concern about the name due to skyrim's whole dragon thing. And how that is going to possibly make a whole lot off people have the word dragon in their character's name. Normally I prefer to keep other people's opinions out of how I name my characters. But I can't seem to make up my mind on it. I'm 50/50 on it and making no headway one way or the other. So anyone who'd like to pipe in with anything constructive, feel free.

On a more related note, I think a system like Guild Wars 2 could work, although it has a huge potential for players making lore breaking and/or pants on head retarded names. Same goes for the first name and last name system to a lesser extent. Either way I hope Zenimax is ready to crack down on people going overboard with it.
