Putting the Arena in Arena

So I was pondering how I could be convinced that eSports and MMOs do well together. When I started working my mind with this idea, the thought of eSports really didn't go well with my perception of what MMOs should be about. I was disgusted, I must admit.
But since I strive for living an open minded life, and excercise for this goal in not so serious environements like gaming, I forced myself to keep going at it. And I think I've come up with a viable solution that potentially could please all.

Staged PvP, Random Matches, Arena Style, Rated Matches

So how to fit this in a living fantasy world, without taking away from the world but still delivering the virtual sports and competition people seek who are participating and competing in it.
Let me start with broad generalizations and a polarized view to the matter. There's the players that love this kind of gameplay and just want to do nothing else and then there are those watching in disgust.

The problem lies in bringing those two types together.

So let's assume, in every major city there's an arena. This building is open and can be freely explored by anyone. Except for the fighting pit and the catacombs below. The auditorium will always be in a certain phase, however.
If you wish to take part in a short arena match, you just queue up from anywhere. You will then be spawned in the catacombs of one of the arenas and the gates to the pit will open when an oppenent is determined and a certain time has elapsed.

During this time, the auditorium will phase to your fight and take all inhabitants with it. The fight will be anounced and there will be bookies offering bets. After the fight is over, the combatants are returned to wherever they are, and the spectators will join the next fight unless they leave the auditorium.
For fighters, there's an option to enter the catacombs and/or stay in there until they leave, so they can participate in as many fights in a row as they please.

With this system, league fights and fights for mastership would not only be something interesting for the sPvPers, but could be advertised in game and all over the city and be a big bloodsport event for all others too.

In order to not take too much away from RvR, this should be restricted to 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and not much more.

That's how I could possibly enjoy eSports in my MMO. And even may be tempted to try it myself.

5v5 wouldn't be bad.

But other than that, yeah: this is how it should be done.

Honestly the best approach I can see in regards to structured PvP is having it heavily inspired by the Arena from Oblivion.

Essentially your idea more or less sums up exactly how the Arena worked in Oblivion and I believe translating that into ESO would not only make it fun for those who enjoy that experience, but also for those who like to be immersed.

Allow small groups of players to compete against each other in a Colosseum. ZOS could make it as gritty, bloody, and intimidating as the Arena was in Oblivion and really give that gladiatorial vibe. Spectators could choose to gamble coin on contestants and those who participate could rise in the ranks and gain a name and reputation for themselves.

I believe this kind of experience heavily influenced by Oblivion would give ESO a very compelling and immersive structured PvP system that most MMOs don't have. It would easily beat out any structured PvP I have seen in an MMO to date and I would actually be looking forward to it.

This would definitely get me involved more in arena PvP. I really like the idea of allowing and involving spectators in the matches. Your ideas bring a much needed level of immersion to arena PvP and I personally would love to see these ideas implemented. Regardless of class balance issues or anything of the sort, I think it would simply make it much more enjoyable and accessible to be a part of. You wouldn't have to be fighting just to participate, great ideas here.

I agree, if there is an arena i HOPE you can watch the matches AND bet on the teams... that be real fun!

Then close your f#$kin' store, 'cause being ready for me'll take care of your wakin' hours, and you'd better have someone to hand the task off to when you close your f$#kin' eyes

WoW arena is shit and in most other games that have it (EQ2 springs to mind) it is dead.

Just dont waste any time on it. The idea of instanced battlegrounds for "competetive" PvP is superior.

there are only 2 ways to do PvP. do it chaotic (aka open PvP) or do it E-sports. Anything else just fails.
