Faction & Race:
Daggerfall Covenant (Breton)
Firstname - Rurik

Surname - Jasun (Pronounced Ya-sune)

Title - The Healer

Sex - Male

Race - Breton

Age - 28

Occupation - Doctor, Combat Medic

Faction - Daggerfall Covenant

Appearance - Rurik has medium dark brown hair. His cheek bones are high and reminiscent of some elven heritage, as can be seen in his hazel eyes. His diet keeps him fairly toned and of average size. He stands at about 5'8".

Personality - Rurik is a hardworking and honest Breton. He can be quiet and unsure of his actions, but he never hesitates. He is not a natural veteran of combat and when things break away from the norm, or planned chain of events, he has to remind himself to regain his composure.

Backstory - The story begins in a small cottage in the countryside of Wayrest, surrounded by tall trees and the sea only a few miles to the west. An alchemist and his wife live happily off the fruits of their labor; farming, fishing, and reminiscing of the rougher times behind them. There's a loud knock on the door front door. The old alchemist gets up to answer, surprised by who, or rather what he is greeted by. It's very dark outside and damp from a storm that had raged earlier that night. The man in front of the alchemist presents a baby boy to the elderly couple, with an omen in his eyes.

"I'm sorry," The man regretfully says, "There has been an accident. Your daughter and her husband were killed earlier tonight when their carriage was sent off the road and collided with a tree."

Fast forward ten years....

Rurik's grandfather had taught him many things over the course of those ten years; how to fish, to hunt. He'd taught Rurik the very basics of alchemy that he had began to learn himself 50 years ago. The closest village was too far to walk, so his grandparents had opted to teach the boy themselves.

As Rurik entered his teen years, his grandfather's health was not what it had once been. His grandfather could no longer perform the same work on his farm as he had been doing, and his bones had become more brittle with age; he could not get around on his own as easily anymore. He had become a frail old man, sick with age. Rurik's grandmother had just passed away the previous year. He was now 17 and it was his turn to repay his grandfather for everything he had done for him.

The farm was too big for one teen alone to take care of, and without the farm there would be no income to continue paying the taxes on the land. It's true, Rurik's grandfather had done well enough in his youth to buy land and support his family comfortably for years to come, but it was always his plan to maintain financial security through his land, and save enough for his grandson. Rurik knew this, so he took initiative to hire hands from other nearby villages. Drawing off resources in the land and the apothecary knowledge his grandfather had instilled in him, he began making medicine for his grandfather, only hindering the inevitable.

At 20, Rurik slowly became more of a manager as he hired more people to handle to labor for him, as he spent more and more time managing the bartering in town and paying the taxes. The farm had become more sufficient than ever; providing more than enough income. Rurik's grandfather was more sick than ever though, and it was obvious. The medicine wasn't having an effect on him anymore and mages of the restoration school could do little more to alleviate the old man's pain.

Rurik returned home from Wayrest one Frostfall evening. All of the laborers had left already. Rurik opened the door and headed toward his grandfather's room as was routine when he came home. A fire danced in front of his grandfather's bed, as his grandfather lay quietly. Not a sound crept from Rurik's grandfather's lungs; no snoring, wheezing, or heavy breathing. Rurik knew his grandfather was dead. He sat down on the bed next to his grandfather and leaned forward, resting his head in his hands to cry. The tears just came streaming out, like a river breaking through a dam. He lifted his head to look at his grandfather's calm head again, noticing a note on the table next to his grandfather. It read:

"To my dear grandson, Rurik.

When your parents were lost to your grandmother and I those many years ago, you were the blessing the divines had spared us. I loved you the best I could, and have watched you become a strong man. I am proud of you, but this has never been the life I wanted for you. I've never wanted you to spend your time worrying about my health. There is something more for you out there. You've helped this old man long enough, and I know you can do greater good by using your talents to help others elsewhere. I hope you understand, but I have willed the farm to be sold after my death, and have left you a small inheritance of what I could.

I lived a very good life, so don't worry about me. Go live your life the way you want now. "

Rurik wiped the last tear from his eye. He would prepare to burial of his grandfather, and then he planned to leave High Rock, at least temporarily...

Rurik was 21 when he finally left High Rock on the first of Morning Star. He decided to head southeast toward the Imperial Province of Cyrodiil and continue his studies in medicine. The first city he came to was Chorrol, where he began asking around to find information on continuing his studies in medicine. An imperial by the name of Erthur Adenius took interest in Rurik's persistence in seeking medical knowledge. He would later become Rurik's first mentor, for a small price.

Erthur had been a medic in the Imperial Legion for fifteen years. He was well versed in alchemy and a moderate wielder of restorative magics. Rurik would study with this man for two years, before moving on to the Imperial City. Erthur taught Rurik the basics of restoration magics; how to heal minor wounds on himself and others, as well as curing some diseases. He provided Rurik with knowledge of Cyrodiil's land, and more potent recipes for medicine.

Upon the recommendation of Erthur, Rurik was invited to join a group of sell swords as their primary healer. Erthur could no longer teach Rurik, since he had been recalled to the Legion. The sell swords were a small band of mismatched mercenaries with racial diversity. Their previous medic had apparently dropped out after some, "complications." Rurik was eager to assist, and needed to begin thinking about money. He figured it would be an easy job if they were as good of fighters as they boasted; and it was an easy job... at first.

After performing jobs with the small band for a few months, who denoted themselves, "Chorrol's Shield," things were about to get messy. The job was supposed to be easy, but things had gotten complicated. A rival band of mercenaries was looking to increase their profit by opening more jobs for themselves, and what easier way than knocking out the competition. One of the rival members had staged a small raid on some traders heading toward Chorrol. He didn't steal anything, but he made his weaknesses so apparent that Chorrol's Shield underestimated what they were getting into. They chased the raider until they believed they had him trapped inside a cave.

Huddled around the cave entrance they taunted the raider trapped inside. Then there was a swift whistle through the chilling air, as one of Chorrol's Shield fell to the ground, his eyes staring blankly toward the stars. A loud thump, another body had fallen. They began dispersing wildly, to save themselves. Rurik took cover, wondering what the hell was happening. When the sun dawned in the morning, the rival sell swords had left, having lost their cover of darkness. Rurik had become traumatized for the weeks following. He neglected any offer to do a job with the the mercenary group until he had been properly trained with a sword himself. Rurik would not chance a close encounter and not being able to defend himself.

Rurik fought for two years along Chorrol's Shield before disbanding. After fighting in a mercenary group he moved to the Imperial City to begin honing his skills in the Legion as a combat medic. The legion fortified his skill with a sword, and emphasized the use of his other talents.

Skills - Excellent Healer
Moderate Sword Play
Farming
Alchemy

Challenges for the Character - His integrity makes some of the harder calls that his superiors make questionable to him. Seeing death in the line of combat is felt as a failure in a way on his part to him.

Birthsign - The Ritual

Religious Views - When he prays, Rurik does so toward Mara and Stendarr. He is not openly zealous however. It is not uncommon for him to reference them in his journal entries however.

"I have a lot of respect for the Restoration School. Tamriel could use more healers."

Great to see a healer oriented character around! Seems like he'd be a useful character to have an around anywhere in Tamriel and an interesting character to interact with when there is a particularly violent battle. I like how his background starts with the humble life of managing a farm, payings taxes and bartering goods before he's essentially allowed to pursue his own path in life thanks to his considerate grandfather before he passed.

I feel like his experiences as a mercenary gives him a very dynamic view upon the dangerous world he lives in, that with fighting there's always this prevalent risk of not seeing the next day. I wonder how he might be influenced by the state of Cyrodiil in TESO seeing how he ended up in the legion.

In any case, good work Jasoody!

Thanks. I appreciate the kind words. I'm not entirely satisfied with him as a character yet though. I feel as though I could explore his background a little more, but alas that will have to come with a due process of proper story telling. I already have an idea for the first article I'd like to write pertaining to this character.

Of course! All characters evolve and expand with due time. Your recent piece in the Library provided good insight into your character by providing his prespective of these major events in his life. Good stuff.

good story I was impressed out how for all his medical expertise and saving life he still worked in a group of mercenaries. being an only survivor of a traumatic incident can take a toll on ones soul but also gives the person a personal challenge they have to overcome later on. if your interested in furthering your character's story perhaps we could do a joint story. message me back if your interested
