Templars, Staffs, and Magic

Hello all, I'm new here, and I have a few questions about the class system.

You see, I'm strongly considering playing as a templar, but I don't quite understand how my templar abilities would work.

Unlike previous TES games, doing magic requires a staff. I understand that any character can use a restoration staff to heal themselves, but that templars also have their own restoration skill line.

However, I can't tell- do the templar's healing abilities still require the use of a staff, and simply give you more skills, or does being a templar let you cast healing spells by hand?

Similarly, it appears that templars have offensive abilites, such as "the power of the sun" (presumably not too many vampire templars, then). Would I cast those spells with a destruction staff, a restoration staff, or by hand?

Sorry if I'm asking a silly question, but I can't seem to find a conclusive answer anywhere.

The magic system is similar to oblivion in that rather than assign weapons and spells to certain hands you have a hotbar of five abilities you can use at any time, and you attack with your weapon using mouse buttons.

So you can use class abilities no matter what weapon is equipped. Using spells and abilities is controlled separately from your weapon.

Ahhh . . . I see. Thanks a lot guys, I get it now. So I wouldn't even really need a staff if I wanted to use either the healing or offensive abilities, would I? I could just go around with a sword or something.

. . . so I'm William Wallace? (Never seen braveheart but I know the quote). Well, I guess between altmer height and sun attacks, I guess that would be true.

Will you need a staff to cast like fireball? Or will it be like oblivion where I can map magic separately from weapon. Also will it be plain magic? Or will it be only abilities.

This is not triditional TES, think MMO. Destruction spells will be cast with a staff. All your magic is in the skill trees. Hope this helps.

That is good news to me

Actually this is traditional TES. You don't need to use a staff to use magic.

I know but there are no destruction skill trees as a result to cast a destruction spell you use a staff. All the ther spells are in the skill trees.

There may not be magic skill trees, but destruction magic is any magic that causes destruction. Therefore, the Dragon Knights fire abilities and the Sorcerers Lightning abilities qualify as destruction magic that doesn't need a staff. Saying that destruction spells can only be cast with destruction staffs is very misleading.

Exactly. The various schools of magic are not their own skill lines but rather spread to across every skill line. Some skill lines will have heavier concentrations of certain schools (DK's will have more destruction than anything, while I imagine a night blade will have more illusion spells and such) but every school will be there somewhere.

Can you dual wield staffs? If not, what is in your off hand?

Also, are class skills and weapons skills on different hotbars?
