Most modern MMO's have some way to test drive you skills before you buy.
GW2 had the mist and npc fighters in pits. city of heros had a test server you could port your character over and respec / test then delete.

I for one spent hours in the mist (GW2) testing my build and had almost as much fun as playing the game.

Do you think this would be a great feature?

The already have a PTS sever up and running. They might utilize that server for that when the game goes live.

Testing skills before you buy them sounds bad to me.

You should be required to think about what skills you buy and how you can apply them.
Character development is a core part of the game, and it shouldn't be a cakewalk because of people wanting cookie cutter builds.

Besides you can get enough skill points to be able to test out loads of different abilities. Just don't make rushed choices.

Does this mean you never acquired a new skill based on the description and as soon as you tested it found it was crap? Or, you never got a skill you disliked?

Test server would be my second choice.

GW2 has the best method i've seen so far.
For those that are not familiar with GW2, it has a zone that puts all players at the max lvl and allows them to allocate all skill points.
There they can fight NPC's of any class.
they can reset all there points at any time too.
once they leave this zone they go back to normal.

Based off the description of the skills I found they were accurate and I as not in any surprised by the application of them..

To me having a 'simulator' just takes the fun and risk of making choices.

I understand where you're coming from. I to enjoy pondering what a skill description would actually do in battle. But I don't have the success rate you do.
Last couple of betas, I made 3 or 4 nightblades, got them between 3 - 15 trying to decide what skills I wanted to use. that was not as enjoyable as using the mist in GW2. Heck, I still don't know what weapons i will be using and the game goes live in 3 days. 8 )

Well, bottom line is if this feature was in game, I would use it, you wouldnt no harm no foul.
Have fun in game!
