The Best Solution to the Pay to Play vs Buy to Play Controversy

Please read the whole thing before you jump to conclusions.

The Buy to Play Option has proven successful with Guild Wars 2. The Gem Store is not a typical cash shop where you pay to win. Its full of cosmetics that attract people to purchase gems to obtain these items. The gem store consists of armor skins, armor repair kits, mini pets, random armor color dyes, character slots, bank tabs, etc. Nothing you buy will give you an advantage. Also the gems can be exchanged for GW2 currency thus eliminating any gold sellers due to the fact that there is a quicker and legal method to do so. Along with converting gems into currency, players can convert the currency earned through quests, selling items, loot, etc. into gems. With time a player can purchase anything on the gem store with currency earned in-game. Purchasing gems would be the easier way out (which several players prefer). I have not seen ANY gold sellers since launch. Another reason why Buy to Play is successful is because, a skeptical player is more likely to try the game since they only have to pay a one time fee and aren't limited to certain content like in Star Wars The Old Republic. Lastly any player who is bored with the current content or is busy with things in real life, can always come back and play whenever they want. Just like now in GW2, many players are busy with final exams or are taking a break from GW2 and plan to come back in February for the new World vs World Expansion. In the mean time they aren't spending their money on a subscription fee and can log-in and play occasionally (GW2 three week X-Mas event) while they wait for the release of the WvW expansion.

Here are the items sold on the GW2 Gem Store
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gem_Store

My solution to the P2P controversy and players worried about Zenimax not having enough money to consistently bring new content is to lower the price of the subscription fee and also add a "gem store" exactly like GW2. I would lower the price of the traditional $15/month to $5/month. This is a very cheap and affordable price for everyone. Along with the $5/month add the "gem store" like in GW2. Everything would be cosmetic and would not give any player an advantage. Many players are willing to spend money to get a certain look, mini-pet, mount, etc. Look at how many people buy these things in World of Warcraft. Also allow the the conversion of purchased "gems" into in-game currency and allow in-game currency to be converted into "gems". So any player with given time can purchase these cosmetic items without spending real money. Guild Wars 2 is living fine off their gem store. Now imagine if they added a $5 monthly sub fee, multiply that by the player base and add in the profits from the gem store. That should solve any worries about consistent new content.

If you prefer the GW2 B2P method and not the Subscription/Gem Store Hybrid comment below saying so.

I personally would prefer the GW2 B2P option, so I can save my money for things IRL. But if players want a monthly sub I think my method is the way to go.

Also please be mature everyone, if you disagree with my method please say so in a mature manner.

I really like the idea, since i am one of those guys that take alot of breaks from gaming because of school work so this is a thing i would really like to be on TESO.

I agree. Many of us have to work, study, and have a real life away from the game. Some of us have a partner to spend time together and have no much time to play. So, it will be amazing if you can buy the game and play any moment you could, not having to play just because you're paying a monthly fee for it. I love this franchise, an I hope the best for this game. By the way, sorry for any misspelling. English is not my mother tongue.

No, i don't like it, since when in lore or any other TES game there were any kind of "gems" or other currency, it was never recorded in history, as far as i know, and adding it now would offend a lot of TES fans, me including. But i do agree 15$ sub fee is too big and not competitive in this age, if they would make it between 5-10$ a month it would be more viable. Either way i wish for P2P system, and if they think that 15$ is the only way to go, so be it.

Gems in GW2 were a separate currency that was not used in the game itself. It was only used to either purchase in store items (character slots, bank slots, skins, xp/speed boosters and the like), or to convert to in game currency (gold). You could also convert in game currency to gems. It was not like your character would run around randomly finding and picking up gems. Your character didn't carry them or touch them. Gems were completely tied to their own gem store, which could be accessed in game from a menu.

While I don't like cash shops, I think GW2 went about it the right way. I wouldn't have any problem with this type of subscription method. Ultimately it's ZOS' decision as to how they want to set it up. But I am also in agreement that the future of MMO's will be going either Buy to Play or Free to Play with cash shops.

If it was restricted to (reasonable!) cosmetic things only I would still be against it, but I could see that it might work. But an in-game way to buy game currency? No thanks.

The idea of an MMORPG (especially TESO) is that it's its own self-contained world. Any game mechanic that allows direct exchange between in-game products and real world currency is IMHO game-breaking. I know that illicit gold farmers are inevitable, and I am usually a pretty hardcore free-market guy, but we're not trying to create Second Life here, we're trying to create a closed system that represents Nirn. I'd rather not have anything in the game that makes me compare it to Farmville.

As in RL, success in TESO should be the result of hard work and persistence, not a mysterious source of outside cash.

I really have to agree with Cools-His-Hands here. I'm personally not a fan of microtransactions - though I tolerate them in certain circumstances. The thing is that ESO represents a two-decades long lore-development cycle. To implant a microtransaction system to buy extra stuff (or cosmetic stuff) is really.....unattractive.....to me. I mean, if you want to wear good looking gear...go get good looking gear in the game...don't just buy it. That'll destroy immersion for me.

I'm going to play the game regardless of what they choose to do, but I personally hope there are no micros.

Im not entirely sure that we need another thread here since the original one is quite active. Popular theme doesnt necessarily means swamping forum with new threads
