So in the Elder Scrolls games the world can be pretty dangerous sometimes. Sure there comes a point where you can eradicate anything that stands in your way, but until you get to that point the denziens that wander Tamriel can sometimes get the upperhand on you! You must exercise some level of caution and play well in order to overcome everything.

The common trend in many MMOs these days has the average enemy defeated with ease by a solo player. The mob normally has no chance against you, despite being the same level, as their offense and defense simply do not match yours. As a result death for the player tends to be very rare.

The reason for this straight forward gameplay is to reduce frustration and improve accessibility for players. This could also making fighting quite boring without the thrill of possible death due to the idea that you're essentially "shooting fish in a barrel."

The Elder Scrolls Online is said to have enemy mobs that exercise strategies and tactics to defeat you. But does that mean they are dangerous if you can simply weather their attacks and punch through their defenses with ease?

In the Elder Scrolls series there's a mix of weak enemies, that are easy to dispose of, and strong enemies that can defeat you; but considering an average fight answer the following question:

How difficult do you want the average TESO enemy NPC to be versus a solo player?
  • Challenging - You must exercise some level of strategy and caution to ensure that you win the battle. You want some thrill in battling an enemy and a feeling of accomplishment in its defeat.
  • Simple - You can charge into battle with consistent assurance that you can defeat the enemy with ease. You want to get killing mobs over with and feel "powerful" against them.

I would like general mobs to be easy when you fight against them on their own, however if they're in large groups it would be cool if they presented a challenge.

this is just one of these "no brainer" threads everyone thats using his brain will reply that a too easy system is stupid.
You should change the question from "do you want the obviously right thing or the bullshit" to "how can we incentivise the right mindset for this kind of game in masses, and how can we influence the developers to agree on that notion"

and to drive my point home, they already stated that enemies are not just supposed to be speedbumps.

Where is the option for the in between choice? Why does every monster have to be super hard to kill? Even in Skyrim you don't have that. You have generic wolves which are easy to kill and ice wolves that are harder to kill. The game needs variety to keep you on your toes.

The challenging one, of course... but I don't want to have to plan a full on ambush for every butterfly I try to kill. Both of these things have already been noted though.

I think what will be important is that there is variety in combat between things like spiders and wolves. I shouldn't feel like I'm fighting the same type of enemy because I'm not. When I'm fighting spiders I should be worried about being poisoned or slowed and when I fight wolves I should be worried about bleeding and getting eaten or something.

They have gone into detail about the one scenario where the two spiders are in a room and the one buffs the other while it attacks, etc.

When your lvl capped only cyradil will be dangerous because you will out gear all your faction areas content and there is no world pvp.

Challenging or simple makes no difference for an Orc.. He will prevail either way.

Debating with someone on the Internet is like mudwrestling with a pig. You get filthy and the pig loves it

Wrong. Even DAoC had plenty of dangerous PvE content in each realm for those who'd hit the level cap. More was added with each expansion, as well. It will be the same for TESO, and likely even better/more challenging.

There will be plenty to do in TESO for players who like PvP, and also for players who just want to PvE.

Bottom line: If you aren't dying every now and again, the mobs are too easy. Either turn up the difficulty (in single player TES games), or go find stronger mobs.

IMHO, a random solo player battling a random same level enemy should die about half the time. Some classes would do better against certain mobs than others, and veteran players would succeed more often. This is where strategy and experience (skill at game play rather than in-game XP) would make the difference.

What about a fallout NV type system where the are areas where dovahkids can pet the mudcrabs and areas where if they wandered they would get ripped apart by horrible blood thirsty beasts and then looted by me.
