The Road to Chaar (I)

Balgir Winterborn walked ahead of Beor on the rocky road leading to Chaar. The sun was blocked by clouds and by the looks of them it was going to rain soon. His eyes wandered over the stony, barren landscape trying to find something different in this sea of grey and brown.

''I've never liked this place, it's too dead.'' He grunted back to Beor and pulled his hand through his dirty hair. Well at least it wasn't that cold yet and his fur cloak was stuffed in his bag along with the last of their food. The mead being long gone along with Balgir's mood. Kicking a stone with his foot, sending it flying further down the road.

''No meat, no mead and just the same damned stones!'' He roared up into the sky.

He looked around, taking in his surroundings. What a barren place. Beor noticed the clouds darkening the sky. Rain again. He looked at Balgir, who was walking a head of him, grumpily muttering to himself.

"How about we find a place to shelter and call it a day?" He called to his companions back. They had been walking all day, and it was getting late now. The wolves and other predators would soon come out of their hiding to hunt.

What would the night bring?

The large Nord stopped and turned to face Beor with a tired smile. With one fluid motion followed by a sigh of relief he removed the heavy bag from his back and placed it at his feet.

''Well it'd be nice to sleep somewhere dry for a change.'' He said as he stretched his arms and back. His eyes scanned the area, looking for anything that would keep them dry and safe from whatever lurks in the shadows. He wasn't sure but it looked like some sort of stone structure further down the road. Turning back to Beor, pointing at his discovery.

''I say we take our chances with this one. Hopefully it's empty.'' Balgir said as he lifted the backpack off the ground and put it on.

Beor was sceptical. He didn't fully trust the ruin, or whatever it was down the road. Who knows what could be hiding out in there? But it had to do. They had to find shelter from the rain, and there wasn't anything else where they could stay the night in.

"Hrmmm... Fine, let's check it out." he said.

The companions made their move towards the structure, hands on the pommels of their weapons. You could never be too careful...

Suddenly the sky was lit up by lighting and soon the thunder echoed across the plains, and with that, the sky opened and rain started to pour down over the two Nords.

''Shor's balls! What have we done to anger the Gods!?'' Balgir roared before picking up the pace, running towards the ruin with his sword in hand. He slowed down when they reached the door and put his hand on the wood. Looking back at Beor before pushing the door open with his sword ready. The hinges creaked as the door opened up and Balgir took a few cautious steps inside with Beor right behind him.

''Seems like the stairs are in one piece.. You check down here and I'll take a look up there.'' He muttered before making his way over the dusty floor to the worn stairs. Treading carefully, he made his way up.

Beor nodded his approval. He unslung his shield from his back and drew his sword as he watched Balgir walking cautiously up the stairs. Beors eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness of the seemingly empty space.

Carefuly he walked further into the room while taking in the interior of the building. He managed to spot a bedroll in shrouded darkness. As he walked towards it he noticed an unlit lantern lying next to it. Beor went down on his knees as he further expected the bedroll, he noticed that it had been lain in not too long ago. An alarming feeling rose up up inside him.

Damn it! It's too bloody dark in here! He thought.

Beor rummaged in his belt pouch and took out the flint and tinder. He laid down his shield, grabbed the lantern next to the bedroll, struck a match, and lit it. The room lightened up a little and he held the lantern high above his head as he looked around. He noticed a burned out campfire and even more bedrolls. Used by the looks of it!

Who had been here? Hunters? Travelling merchants? Pilgrims? ... Bandits? He stood up and started walking alongside the walls. As he walked past them he spotted a few crates and sacks, most of them empty by the looks of them.

He grunted to himself. He didn't trust it one bit. "Oi! Balgir, looks like the place has already been occupied by Shor knows whom!" He yelled towards the ceiling.

When Balgir reached the upper floor he was greeted by spiderwebs and darkness. Which was a lot better than an angry bandit. His eyes tried to adjust to the dark as he took a few careful steps forward. Beor called out from below and Balgir quickly answered.

''Well it's dark as Oblivion up here!'' He yelled as he placed himself in the center of the room. Slowly his eyes adjusted to the dark and he could see the stairs that should lead up to the next floor was completely destroyed. He took one last glance around the room before he went back down and greeted Beor with a smile.

''Whoever called this place home is gone and here in the Reach everything is for the taking lad! I'm not going to take one more step before I've had some sleep.'' He chuckled and sat down on one of the empty crates with a sigh of relief.

Beor still felt anxious about the idea of staying in the hideout. But he was seducted by the idea of a nice warm bed and a hunk of bread with some soup.

"Hrmm.. Alright, let's settle here than."

He started clearing off some of the old, used bedrolls and other stuff that was lying around to the walls. Now that he cleared some space, Beor rolled out his own bedroll and laid down his satchel and his bow and arrows next to it. Balgir next to him was doing the same. Beor sat down heavily on his bedroll.

"Whats for dinner?" He asked as he yawned and stretched.

Balgir pulled out his own bedroll from his bag and sat down on it. He sighed and stretched his arms before opening the bag once more.

''Well we got old dry bread and some bad fruit.'' He grunted as he pulled out a package containing their last food. He placed it between them and opened it, frowning at the sight. The fruit was now completely rotten and the bread looked like it could be used as a hammer, the sight made his mood drop even further, but food was food. He pulled out his knife and cut off a piece of the dry bread and handed it over to Beor.

''Just pretend it's some fresh Apple Bread from Whiterun..'' Balgir sighed and put a piece of bread in his mouth. He wished he had some mead to wash this down as he swallowed it down. He got up from his bedroll and walked over to the small window. It was still raining and once more the sky was lit up by lightning. How he hated the Reach. He stared at the landscape for a good few minutes before he came back to Beor, still frowning. He lied down on his bedroll and looked up into the ceiling, almost dozing off.

''I would do anything for some mead and a good roast..''

Beor nodded his agreement.

"Aye, when we finally get to Chaar we shall go into the nearest inn and feast like kings! Even though we haven't got the money for that... Oh well, we'll find a way, eh?"

Beor got up from his own bedroll, and took a bite from the tough hunk of bread. He barely managed to swallow it. He went back to his satchell and searched for the water skin. As he grabbed it he took a long draught from it, followed by a soothing "Aaahh.."

Beor handed the waterskin over to Balgir.

"Who has first watch?"

Balgir accepted the waterskin with a tired smile and took a deep sip. He handed it back to Beor while wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. His hand moved through his blonde hair and rubbed his neck. When they finally arrived he'd sleep for days.

''I'll let you have the honor of First Watch lad. We older Bears need our sleep.'' He grunted and laid back onto his bedroll. He pulled out his fur cloak from the bag and placed it over himself. Yawning as he wrapped the cloak around himself, he closed his eyes.

Beor didn't mind. His friend deserved the well earned rest. He walked over to the door, making sure it was closed. Blast it all, no lock on the door.. hrmmmpf... He spotted a crate and decided that he would take his watch from there. Good view on the door and the rest of the room. Beor grabbed his satchel and the lantern next to his bedroll and took them towards the crate. Placing them on either side of it as he sat down. He left his shield lying next to Balgirs, he couldn't be bothered to stand up and get it. A sword should be sufficient should I find myself in unlikely danger...

Beor wrapped his thick cloak tightly around him and shivered lightly. As he breathed out his breath formed warm condense. It's cold tonight, he thought. His Nord blood would keep him warm, preventing him from freezing to death.

With a sword clasped in one hand, Beor lay back against the cold stone wall, listening to the thunder and to Balgirs snoring which would occassionaly rise up above the sound of the thunder, to Beors amazement and slight annoyance. He couldn't help but smile, they had been wandering the lands toghether for almost four years now and the young Beor and Balgir had grown close as friends and companions.

Beors mind dwelled off as he stared at the dancing shadows that were portrayed on the wall from the shimmering light of the lantern.

He waited and held watch...

Two nords... running around the tundra together... in Skyrim... looking for wenches and skooma.

Well, not exactly. But I could clearly see that Beor and Balgir have each other's backs! I like how the two are characterized and their reactions to travel, hunger, the cold, and dark mysterious forms of shelter. The evidence of previous inhabitants in the fort does have my interest peaked!

Thanks!

And on a small note. Beor and Balgir aren't the skooma types. They do however, like mead and ale a lot.
