I just found this on Gameinformer and thought I should share it with you guys:

Quote:Rice University in Houston, TX, which is not a video game design school, is offering a class titled Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim*. It's only available for one semester and is described as such:

This course has two goals. First, it introduces students to fantasy as both psychological concept and driving force in gamer culture; and second, using these paradigms, it considers how and why medieval Scandinavia serves as a locus of modern Anglo-American fantasy. To these ends, students will read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim.

While the course begins by identifying moments of intersection between the worlds of the sagas and of Skyrim (inclement environments, supernatural figures, mythologies), the course is not in any means meant to map the former onto the latter. The purpose of establishing these connections is to then consider how elements of medieval Scandinavian culture have been taken out of historical milieu and literary context, morphed into unfamiliar shape, and appropriated towards other fantastic pursuits.

We’ll consider the political saga of Skyrim, with its emphasis on Empire and rebellion, as pursuits made possible by way of Scandinavia in order to think through what Scandinavian fantasy worlds are really about and why they resonate with contemporary Anglo-American culture.

Enrollment is limited, so sign up now!

I saw that a few days ago - it seems like it would be a fun course, but I doubt I'd ever take it. I would love to hear some of the lectures though... But seeing as how I'm more of a closet geek, nobody would see me in a class based off of a video game.

Same here, I don't think I'd actually take the course. I'd love to see a lecture on youtube or something though....

i kinda agree with tecca tho, most of my friends dont know that i play DotA for example. But skyrim beeing extremeley mainstream, most of my friends actually figured it out by now.

I guess those lectures would be extremeley interresting, i bet bethesda feels quite proud about what they accomplished.

I'm actually skeptic about how much Skyrim the course involves... It's called "Scandinavian Fantasy World: (...)" so I'm guessing Skyrim won't be the only fiction it will bring up. I could be wrong though...

Too bad they don't appear to have OpenCourseWare like Berkeley....who pretty much had a course on how to play Starcraft recently.

No, I'm serious. Here's the syllabus: http://www.decal.org/file/1202 and the lectures can be found all over youtube.

Yes I would take this course ... #1 to go back to Texas and #2 because it sounds fascinating. It sounds to me like they are actually going to play Skyrim as they are reading Old Norse Sagas and that's a win/win situation for me. I'd love to do both.

As for gaming in general like Glassweaver pointed out at Berkeley, many alzheimers patients are now being introduced to WoW playing & it's reported that it is helping their memory & thinking functions.

Oh wait ... Houston? No, I don't do Houston. I am a San Antone kinda person.

TESO - - Multiplayer: "M'aiq does not know this word. You wish others to help you in your quest? Coward! If you must, search for the Argonian Im-Leet, or perhaps the big Nord, Rolf the Uber. They will certainly wish to join you." M'aiq the Liar.

"Va Khaj Dar - Khajiity's united? M'aiq will join!" M'aiq the Liar

I'd definitely take the course -- I took archeology and geology courses as an undergrad and we used a lot of fantasy material as well as old texts and obviously science stuff.

When I first started my M.S. program, there was a course (NSP: 603 National Security Law) that mentioned Metal Gear Solid......the original, not the lame followups.

MGS is my second of two favorite games (TESIII being the first).

I would definitely take the class. I love studying old mythologies and religions. I also really like Skyrim.

I unfortunately was practical and pursued my other passion, computers.

Yeah. I grew up in Houston and as soon as I moved to the Arlington area (where I am now) I realized just how bad Houston is. I can't stand even driving down there anymore. People are so inconsiderate.
