Aldmeri Dominion (Bosmer)
Firstname - Valandil

Surname - Norodiir

Title - None

Sex - Male

Age - 102

Occupation - Hunter/Ranger

Faction - Aldmeri Dominion

Appearance - Fair skin, Hazel hair, Blue eyes, Average height (for a Bosmer), Slightly muscular, Faint scar on left cheek.

Personality - Honorable, Committed, Cunning, Fights with valor, Fair, Just, Outspoken, Bold.

Social Background/Backstory - Born to Elrond and Eruwen Norodiir in a caravan travelling through Southern Cyrodiil destined for Valenwood. Valandil, a young Bosmer of a mere 102 years spent most of his adolescence hunting for game and practicing stealth tactics with his brother, Daeron, in the woods of their home country of Valenwood.

Valandil would often argue the politics of Tamriel with his parents who were strong Elf supremacists. He believed that all races should be equal and have a fair share of Tamriel's dense landscapes. Valandil was angered that his parents put his opinion down to naivety and ignorance so found a confidant in his brother whom which he bore a close bond with.

When he was 53 years old, Valandil ran away to live in the trees after an argument with his parents. His brother stayed behind to try and calm the situation even though Valandil was keen on his company. Whilst running through the tree tops in a fury he did not realise a group of Orc bandits who had been raiding travelers throughout Valenwood.

Smelling smoke in his slumber Valandil awoke and seeing an orange glow on the trees from where he had come began to sprint home. Upon reaching his home he found the trees burning and his house collapsing in the inferno. Dropping in through a hole in the roof from a tree above, Valandil landed inside just in time to see the band of Orcs slaughter his parents in the burning wreck.
Charging at the Orcs, daggers drawn, he sustained a gash to the left cheek as an arrow was launched at him by one of the Orcs. Loosing his balance, he fell and crashed through the burning floor.

He awoke not but an hour later from his unconsciousness to find himself confronted by the body of his brother, barely alive, who had been pieced by many arrows. Pulling him from the embers of the structure he spoke to him. Daeron told him to stick to his values of fairness no matter what the circumstance to ensure that Tamriel became a better place. With that he died in his arms. Enraged by the murder of his family Valandil realised his parents were right. He could not let the ignorant lesser races gain power in Tamriel. He swore to avenge their deaths until the time came when he was in a position to make Tamriel a just land. With that he began to pursue the Orcs.

Seven months later and Valandil found his chance. The Orcs he had been tracking had set up camp in western Cyrodiil on their journey home. During the night he descended on the camp. To one he cut their throat while sleeping - the same way his mother died. Another he drew out its entrails throwing them in the campfire much like his father died. For his brother, he pierced the marksman Orc with 50 arrows. For the Orc leaded he tipped his dagger with a poison native to Valenwood best known for a painfully festering and slow death. Awaking the Orc he sliced his cheek in the same way his was so that the beast may feel the same slow pain that he must endure with a constant reminder of that nightmarish day. "An eye for an eye" he remarked as the creature he had cut began to fit, writhing on the floor.
With his family avenged, Valandil sat by the ruined camp for 3 days in homage to his family before devouring his kill, with exception of the poisoned Orc, who's blood he drew out and stored in several viles for tipping arrows aimed at foes who crossed him dearly.

When he reached 58, Valandil decided that he could not settle in Valenwood so soon after his families murder. So he set out to the Summerset Iles to learn the principles of restoration magic with an aim to prevent the deaths of those mortally wounded like his brother.

After two decades with the Altmer, Valandil learnt his skill however also concluded that Tamriel would not be a fair place without the knowledge and experience of an elf on its throne. He made a vow to the Altmer to return home to Valenwood and gather assets which may aid their cause should the time arise.
Therefore he founded the Rangers of the Dominion, a guild of highly skilled Bosmer, Kajiit and Altmer hunters, marksmen and fighters whom he would fight alongside in the great battles that foreboded the land.

Best Memory - Hunting in the woods of Valenwood with his brother Daeron.

Worst Memory - The slaughter of his family.

Skills - Marksmanship, Dual wield combat with swords and daggers, Restoration Magic, Hunting, Tracking, Stealth.

Challenges for the Character - To overcome his bereavement and restore Tamriel to a fair and just land.

Religious Views - Sworn the Green Pact oath to the forest deity Y'ffre that he will not kill injure or eat any vegetation in return for his patronage.

Politics Views - Once naive, Valandil had faith that Tamriel could be a mutual and equal land. After the slaughter of his family and 20 years in training with the Altmer, he now believes that this is only achievable with Elven leadership on the throne of Tamriel and will fight for this privilege within the Dominion.

I like it.
The tale of how he lost his parents reminds me of every adventure game ever made, and not in a bad way.
There is a reason a tragedy at the start of the heroes career is so often used and that is because it works.
It yanks the hero out of his comfort zone, perhaps forces him to re-evaluate long cherished beliefs and sets him on the road to his future while at the same time strengthening his resolve and giving him the possible goal of revenge.

Thought I'd add some responses to the senario questions proposed by Quib:

1. There is some one in your town who you like, a friend. The other night you find him feeding on a beggar .... s/he's a vampire. what do you do?

Valandil would ask his friend to seek help. If his friend objected, he would quite happily drive an arrow into his friends chest.

2. Some one has had their only child kidnapped and is looking for help

Valandil would find the child no matter what as he knows the value of family.

3. Some one stole your Sweet roll ;p

Valandil wouldn't care. He doesn't like sweet rolls. Abiding to the Green Pact, he only eats meat.

4. Some one is offering you a life changing amount of money to kill a friend

Valandil would kill the offerer then steal the money from his corpse as recompense for such an audacious suggestion.

5. A drunken person at a bar insults your pride

Take the blow, but as soon as they speak mention of Valandil's family, take them down and humiliate them publicly.

6. a thief approaches you, you recognise him, he's a lowly street rat born poor and had to struggle for food and money, he depends you to hand over your good! and pulls out a knife

Valandil would disarm him and give him some food willingly letting him know he only had to ask.

7. The murderer of a good friend of yours passes you in a crowded street, he doesn't recognise you

Valandil would scratch him with a poisoned arrowhead as he passed letting the potency linger until he died from bulbous warts.

8. You witness a crime, the victim is unaware that he is about to be a victim

Valandil would send an arrow through the calf of the criminal before he laid a finger on the victim, he'd then string the criminal up to a tree branch until he was discovered by the authorities.

9. Someone you hate is trying his / her best to make friends with you

Valandil would treat this with cautionary hostility until the person could prove their worthiness to him.

10. you have been offered an artifact of GREAT power! you have heard / read that this artifact is evil and dangerous and is better to be destroyed!

Valandil would hand the artifact over to a higher council who would decide upon its fate. Such a decision should not be made by one alone.

11. A person is victim to an agonizing disease that cannot be cured, they will soon die a slow and painful death. They ask that you stop their suffering and end their life.

Valandil would put an arrow swiftly through their skull to ease their passing quickly and painlessly.

12. A great warrior of an opposing faction has slain many of your allies but is forced to yield to you after a battle. They are now at your mercy.

Valandil would honor his yield and hand him over to a higher council for either execution or imprisonment.

13. You and a good friend are part of an army fending off a daedric invasion pouring out from an oblivion gate. You have the opportunity to stop the entire invasion now by closing the portal from within, a one way trip in this case. Your friend is insistent on being the one to sacrifice himself and begins to head to the portal do so.

Valandil would let him after making him consider his choice. If he was sure then its his decision and a worthy sacrifice to save the lives of many. Personally Valandil would rather fight it out.

14. Many years ago, a close family member of yours volunteered to fight in a war. During one the battles he was slain by an enemy soldier. Now you have encountered that very same soldier living a peaceful life with a family on a farmstead.

Valandil has no family. He lost them when he was still young to an Orc raid. Upon finding the Orcs camped out he left none alive and mutilated their bodies.

15. You have spent a month looking for a lost priceless treasure in the mountains. Once you find it however, you find out that it rightfully belongs to a nearby village.

Valandil would return it to the villiage if it turned a worthy profit.

Nice work Valandil, elven archers are not to be messed with, obviously ;)

The only remark I would make is to always be careful with making your character a bit too cliché and overpowered when it comes to brawls, fights, and so on. It only makes a character more real if he/she isn't perfect and takes a punch once in a while ^^

Characters can be badass without falling into the dreaded Mary-Sue ;) Giving them little flaws and quirks make them all the more alive!

By the way, I honestly don't give small criticism to be a pest :) Just trying to give some constructive feedback, as I know roleplay-communities (especially when they are filled with veterans) can be ruthless when it comes to accepting characters. Characters that suffer from "too good to be true" tend to have the opposite effect on fellow roleplayers. Give your character some quirks, like fear of heights, spiders, the unability to withstand the effects of mead, a soft spot for kittens...Be creative!

There you go! The fear of fire is a good start ;D And shortcomings and fears are definitely worth mentioning in templates :)
