I don't get it... why do so many people go for that playstyle?
All you're doing is crouching and moving far too slow for anyone to want to pay attention, you have to rely on sneaking to do any sort of damage, and nothing chaotic happens! It's boring!
So... can somebody please explain why people like those playstyles... I just... I just don't understand...

I have never been into the "rouge" style of play either. I don't have the patience for it.

Because people like edgy ninja assassins.

Duh.

By arrow. By blade.
By tooth. By claw.
By shock. By frost. By flame.
The Aldmeri Dominion will dominate Tamriel.
Our enemies will fall until the Throne is ours.

BUT IT'S BOOOOOORRRRIIIIINNNNGGGG!!!!
Why would somebody want to sneak around and hide from people like little babies instead of charging their enemy and ripping 'em to shreds with a sword to show 'em who's boss?!

Primarily because its the easiest class to be good with.

Dont listen to folks telling you they are hard, nothing with an instant invisibility button is hard.

The other reason of course is that they want to look cool. When i was 13 i made an Assasin Character in Morrowind too because i thought it was edgy. Once you grow older you will see that this is in fact not the case.

Rubbish, I'm not far away from 40 now, and If anything I know less now that when I was 13. I certainly have much worse judgement. Also Ninja's are kewl. Not as Kewl as Pirates, granted, but still quite kewl.

Because people like to feel sexy in those tight rouge outfits? lol

On a serious note I used to think the same way but there is a beauty about being sneaky and submersing yourself in shadow (from a rp perspective). Your heart beats faster and the sheer nerves makes it exciting. If you have patience and precision. I guess it all boils down to personal taste, and your mood.

Cause nightblades are seemingly invincable. They always get portrayed the same way.

Just look at the old ninja movies, Bruce Lee, or assassins creed. In a way it's a form of propaganda. People think ninjas and assassins are invincable bad asses.

Being in a sneaking mode, being able to decide whether to attack or not, having the ability to escape the fight at any given time = seeming control over the situation ---> People like this

That's why a great deal of people are appealed by the whole rogue/nightblade idea.

I wont be sneaky not by a long shot, however while my Khajiit will be a night blade the character wont be above putting on heavy armour and a 2h weapon.

I guess it's just that it's a lot straight forward than the rest of the classes. It's also a lot more tactical than some of the classes. At the same time though there will always be something that is most popular. Like I don't understand what is up with all of the nords.

In Skyrim I was suprised how much I loved playing a Nightblade character, illusion, sneak, bow, dagger, etc, and it isn't boring at all. Yeah it's a lot slower but it does feel good to be in control.

As for why people like it so much in TES, it's simple: it's vastly overpowered. That sneak damage bonus means you practically never have to fight anything. People like being overpowered. There is really no downside to it in TES (other than the stated gameplay preferences). It can only help.

As for why people like it so much in other games: as Beor said, in pretty much ALL media the ninja/stealthy character is portrayed as the badass. You will very rarely find a non-badass ninja that isn't the comic relief character. You have Assassin's Creed, Naruto, Ryu Hayabusa... Ninjas seem to get glamorized more than anything else as the cool/largely powerful thing and largely marketed toward teens and young adults. Then going with what Sordak said, once people mature more they can make their own decision about whether they are drawn to that kind of imagery. They are no longer the target audience for a lot of the shallow edgy/cool ninja characters. Nobody can legitimately say Ryu Hayabusa has any real depth; he is simply a ninja that runs around slashing things saving the world. Teens LOVE that, since it's just a simple icon of badassery and nothing more. I get a kick out of it too when the mood hits me, but it's not like I think if I choose an assassin class I become as "cool" as Ryu. You can definitely tell the difference between someone who likes ninjas based on a mature perspective or a younger perspective when they explain why they like them.

Myself, I've played stealth characters in MMORPGs almost solely for more than 12 years now. Have I tried something else? Oh why yes, but nothing adjusts my personal playstyle of RPG's better than a stealth character. As previously stated, control is the first "pillar", you can choose your opponent, the time of attack and the style of initiation which alone can be critical in the fights outcome. Next is the strategy part, stealth characters are often paired with abilities that can be used efficiently to disorient opponents (not their characters but the characters players) and the more the control you have of the fight, the better are your chances of the fight following the pattern you want it to follow. Though to say, I don't care about invisibility too much, and to me the idea of sneaking around waiting for free kills isn't the thing about stealth characters. To me invisibility is merely a tool of initiation and defensive ability, and it serves no other special purpose or factor of coolness.

So, why did I start playing stealth characters in the first place? Unfortunately I cannot answer that, but I do too loathe the very stereotype of stealth characters. People imagine themselves as top players by typically favoring the most easy to execute stealth characters, your typical assassin toons. In most games I've played, the stereotypical stealth character is the most easy class to execute to a proper level, hence the popularity. Most often the player cannot go wrong when they play one. That brings me to the third reason; The mask-effect. When people encounter a stealth toon in PvP, they too are struck by this generalization, and expect myself to play like all the other stealth characters they have encountered, thus I favor unique builds in every single MMORPG I play, and having the advantage of people not being accustomed to dealing a toon like mine has been a massive benefit to myself, which is the fourth reason: Crushing my opponents solely by beating them in mind games.
