Why I think TESO will fail

I am a big ES fan and MMO fan, I think over the last 14 years I have played all of them and during that time I have noticed a trend, allow me to explain.

All of the big MMO's had pretty good PvE, it was their core gameplay, WO, LOTR, SWTOR, Rift, WOW, COH, GW2 the list goes on and one.

All of the above games were huge AAA MMO's and every single one of them except WOW failed, some failed very badly. Infact only one of them can still hold a monthly sub and that is WOW with it's 8 million subscribers, even that is now failing as when I used to play it had 21 million.

So what is the trend? Well in my opinion the main thing that you need to have a successful MMO is immersion and atmosphere and you only get that through PvP. Take WOW for example back before WOTLK and all the other horrible addons. You had a huge world of Azeroth, filled with PvE but also a very dangerous place to travel due to the all out faction based PvP. Questing was so exciting as you never knew if you would be killed by a group of enemy players or a high level enemy ganker, either way you were on edge, keeping an eye open. This added excitement, danger and atmosphere which the other MMO's above all lacked.

Rift failed because although it had similar PvP to wow the entire game was just a carbon copy, why would anyone give up wow to start a game that was so similar.

SWTOR failed because the zones were so badly done that you could actually level all the way to 50 without ever coming across an enemy player and when you did the PvP was just Stunwars online.

LOTR failed because it had no world pvp

WO failed because the pvp was so restricted it because boring fast, same with COH & GW2 they had limited PvP in certain places and it's boring.

So TESO it looks great and will get a lot of players initially but so did SWTOR & LOTR. The fact of the matter is that when you have a MMO that does not have separate PvP or PvE servers it will fail. You are throwing them all together and most people prefer PvP which is why in WOW you have more PvP servers than PvP. And only being able to PvP in one area will make the game boring as questing for the majority is boring in an MMO as it lacks any danger....collect 7 fox tails...yawn....but collect 7 fox tails and hope you don't get ganked is anything but boring.

So imo they should have taken the wow PvP model as this would have added the all important immersion and exciting factor to the game. They should have pvp & pve servers to cater for the people who don't want pvp. They have chosen to water down pvp and have pve and pvp players all in one server and this is why in 6 months to a year this game will be F2p with about 500k subs.

Cyrodiil is a huge area with both PvP and PvE. It's essentially it's own PvP server.

By arrow. By blade.
By tooth. By claw.
By shock. By frost. By flame.
The Aldmeri Dominion will dominate Tamriel.
Our enemies will fall until the Throne is ours.

Watered down PvE? My friend it seems you haven't done your research on Cyrodil. The game is massive, much bigger than I think you've realised. If they had servers that were PvP only and others that were PvE they'd be splitting the population. That detracts from the immersion, which, I assume, is the reason you feel the game will fail. They'd have to cut the size drastically if they made seperate servers, and then they wouldn't be doing justice to the scale of Tamriel and would get shit for it.

What they've done instead - and this is something you've so casually overlooked - is they've added a whole ton of PvE exclusive to the super-massive Cyrodil. Public Dungeons, Quests, Mobs and resources available only to Cyrodil are all part of the initial release. I would have thought by now they've made it clear that the PvE is based on exploration, discovery and immersion, which you apparantely believe isn't present. Of course we don't know for sure if they can put their money where their mouth is but for now, we have no choice but to hope and believe.

I know that you'll never be afraid of dying at the hands of the enemy in an area that belongs to you, but understand that not everyone thinks as you do. In any case, we've been promised Cyrodil is all that we hope it will be and more so that it might provide enough content to last us a good couple of years, PvE and PvP both.

If it fails, and I hope it doesn't, it'll be because it didn't provide us with exactly what they've been saying it will. People are hyped about what's been confirmed and what's been promised, not about things that haven't been mentioned. If the game delivers what it's said it will, we really don't need people griefing level 5's for the sake of immersion.

Thanks for the reply's but am not really convinced and also why is it that when WOW is mentioned everyone says things like "griefing lvl 5's" Come on, everyone that has ever played WOW knows that griefing is like 1% of the gameplay experience.

BTW when GW2 was launching people said exactly the same with regards to this huge pvp area with quests. I tried it out and found it to be boring, smaller than expected and was nothing more than a bigger version of one of the WOW battlegrounds which are utterly horrible.

I hope you are right and we have a massive pvp zone that is the size of azeroth and is full of questing and players....sadly I think we will get a zone about half the size of eastern kingdoms and after the initial few months the pvp players will be totally bored of being enclosed into a small zone and go back to wherever they came from.

I will be more than happy to return to this post and eat humble pie if I am wrong but I doubt it.

Teiji is curious

If you have a crystal ball, I'd like photographic evidence to show you have a crystal ball.

Teiji is saddened

Mack, if its successful or not, what does that even have to do with anything right now? I mean come-on, really? Really? This thread wrenches my heart up and then slams it back down, it saddens Teiji.

I'm not interested in a case study on Star Wars, Lord of the rings, Rift and some other games you mentioned.

Teiji enjoys talking elder scrolls, not crystal-ball case studies

I'm on this Elder Scrolls fansite because I'm obsessed with The Elder Scrolls and I get to talk with others that love The Elder Scrolls whilst I make the wait for TESO bearable.

Teiji asks the original poster a question

Question for Mack: What is it you hope to gain from creating this thread?

Do you hope someone posts on this thread:
"Hi Mack, I have a crystal ball so you can see into the future and see if The Elder Scrolls Online is successful or not, its not insured however so you need to handle it very carefully. You'll also have to pay for postage, its quite heavy."

If you think that PvE quests will be collecting fox tails etc., even only at the beginning, you clearly haven't done enough research on this game.

Questing was boring as fuck. PvP was fun. Collecting 15 owl beaks/troll mojo/insert random animal part wasn't fun at all

LOL yet most people spend the bulk of their time PvE-ing... probably because its relaxing.

Am I the only one who thinks this may be Konahrik in disguise?

Brother, you picked the wrong forum to come to for an argument on whether or not the game will fail. This place right here has some of the most loyal sons-of-bitches you'll find anywhere, I believe I've seen a post where Rhaskos has said something to the effect of: "I'm currently TESO's bitch."

As you can probably tell by now, you came to the wrong neighborhood mother f*cker! (I didn't bother reading the rules about swearing, so i'll play it safe)

Aside from the fact that the PVP looks amazing and there is a lot of chance for them to add more PVP related things in the future, PVE is amazing, and it's all about end game PVE. PVP is okay and all but gets old and just boring. PVE is where it;s at. It's a collaboration between multiple people to defeat the hardest content in the game to achieve the best loot. In a loot driven game how is PVE not going to be the main focus. PVE v PVP has always been a big thing in MMOs. PVE is better.

Always possible.......And Konahrik may have been Sordak in disguise for anyone who was around that long ago....
