Not Set
I was watching a video posted by [Tamriel Foundry] - (Misconceptions of TESO) and in it I'm sure I saw variations of the same armour but with different hues/colours and I was hoping that its indeed true and that they'll be custom armour options as one of my pet peeves in MMOs is going to any populated area and seeing 30/40 exact clones of your character!!!

(Hmmm... that could be interesting! I'll have to check out the video myself, it's a very neat concept!)

There may not be armor options, but different variations of the same armor. It's hard to tell which way they're gonna go with it, but I could definitely see the use of dyes and maybe minor cosmetic changes, for example a hood can either cover your mouth like nightingdale armor. Or just a full open face.

(It certainly wouldn't hurt to add complete customization options to player armor. A diverse population = a happy population)

I agree completely, but the customization's shouldn't be too far over the top. The armor should at least still be recognizable, no matter the appearance.

Custom armour as in what? As in being able to mod the game with your own armours and having other players see them? Unfortunately, that will never happen. No only is it unfeasible because your armour mesh needs to be sent to all users who come into range of your toon, but it also allows TOS violations where players could add on naughty extensions to the mesh or stitch dirty pictures, hate-speech or cursing into the texture files.

What may end up being allowed is users sending in meshes and textures to ZOS and, once they are approved, having them distributed via patches to all players, so they can select, craft and view the custom armour you created.

OTOH, if you mean custom armour as in different designs of the same type, I think you have nothing to worry about. I can almost guarantee there will be different styles of steel, glass, elven, etc armours between the three different factions. And if that is true, it's not a big step to say there will be more designs even within the same faction. Plus it's already been confirmed that crafters will be able to craft armour styles from other factions.

I've seen that video and that would be really cool. I hope you can put guild crests on capes as well, then you would know what guild someones in.

(Far from mods; the game itself, while having no room for 'drastic' changes, can still be tweaked to have some sort of seperate interface available to all players where they can choose from a variety of preset color schemes, i.e. traidic or monochromatic, etc etc.)

(I know for a fact that WoW has just implemented that into the game, and it's a swell idea. Possibly guild-related armor as well? Oh, the possibilities are endless!)

I have a mixed opinion on armor dyes. In games without a lot of varied gear models, they provide for some uniqueness -- essentially creating figurative extra idem models. In games with a lot of gear models, I don't think they're particularly necessary.

Oh, and no on player-made armor mods. No, no, no, no, no. With skimpy JRPG armor sets all over the nexus, that's the last thing this game needs.

Armor dyes if done right can be really good. For instance in a really old MMO, Ultima Online which is still going today, they had a dying system where you could create any of probably a million different shades of any color.

In this dying system you went out and purchased a dye tub and a set of dyes. You then dumped the dyes into the tub and the tub had two sliders one for color and intensity, and one for gama and contrast. By manipulating these sliders you could come up with a very unique color that no one else would have.

Once you had your tub set to your color you left the controls alone and kept the dye tub in your bank. If you ever needed to dye anything again is was there for you to use.

Rare colors like pure black and forest green to name a few could not be mixed with the dye tub, those had be found as rare drops.

Paul Sage was on the development team for UO and it would not surprise me if ESO has a similar dying system to what UO had.

So, a dye minigame type of system?

How I was going with the dye's, was that they should be very minor. Maybe slight color changes. I don't wanna see this game magically get super colorful and fantasy like.

I agree with you on the mods as well. They should come out with different form's or textures for the armor. Maybe adding a ragged look, worn-out, dinged and other appearances to show strength. Or maybe for those who like reflective or shiny armors to show dignity and wealth. Insignia's and Desgins for some plates as well?? Never know.

I dont think there will be a die system. We would have seen it in the Intro to TESO video. In the Video they just showed tons of different armor sets..

I think a dye system would take away from the Immersion they are set to create. Then again if they old used Dark colors I could see how it would fit.
