Character Lvl 31
1H&shield skill level = 11, wpn dmg = 60 (no enchantments)
2H skill level = 43, wpn dmg = 70 (no enchantments)

all dps tests came from killing lvl 30 Thunderbugs with 1.1K HP
seconds are the average time to kill 1 Thunderbug

Heavy attack Average / Quick attack Average
1h&shield = 67 DPS, 17 Seconds / 62.5 DPS, 17 Seconds
2H = 85 DPS, 12.5 Seconds / 75 DPS, 15 Seconds

Now maybe later on the dmg gap becomes much more apparent? I'm not entirely sure but more to come when I find out. Even if 1H&shield was at the same skill level as 2H at most it could only hope for a 3% increase in dmg.

Interesting numbers. I haven't done any quantitative testing myself, but I concluded that 2H offered only a marginal DPS advantage over 1H+shield, and I chose the later since it gave me another piece of heavy armor for passives and enchantments. 2H skills are very different from 1H+shield skills though, so it's not really fair to just compare weapon damage.

As @OldElf has said, a lot of the DPS comes from the skills that you use from those trees. However, the fact that 1h+shield has that massive armor debuff seems to even things out a bit.

Kinda depends on what kind of character you want to roll with.
1h-shield is more for tanks while 2h is more for dmg dealers.

He is in death as he was in life : rather screwed.

Playstyle affects your performace alot. I currently do VR10 content (with my VR8 Sorcerer) and 90% of time with 2h

I use Momentum, Critical Surge and Bound Armaments for massive stealth heavy attack that eats up 80% of mobs health and my bread and butter skills is Brawler, which is AoE with bleed effect and puts nice buble on me

While at early levels dmg might be simmilar, there will be notable difference in VR, at least I noticed that flat stat dmg of rank5 bow is quite alot behind rank5 2H

Debating with someone on the Internet is like mudwrestling with a pig. You get filthy and the pig loves it

I played 2H originally. Then I wanted to tank also, so I levelled shield. Now I still prefer 2H, and I'm dealing more easily with mobs when using a 2H weapon (I'm a DK).
