Hey guys, I'm making this thread so that I can share information about a major aspect of the game;

Leveling your Skills!

Leveling in TESO is going to be extremely important for not only personal success, but the success of your guild and alliance. Increasing the power of your character is one of the best ways to earn money, experience with the game, and gain respect from players you come in contact with.

Enough of that then, lets get down to the information!

We know that in TESO we will most likely be able to level our:

-Health/Stamina/Magicka
-Combat abilities
-Armors
-Weapons
-Crafting skills such as Alchemy, Smithing, Enchanting
-Stealth skills such as Speechcraft, Lockpicking and Pickpocket (not on release?)
-Sneaking (Unknown if it will be trainable)

The name for the experience points that we'll be gaining in each of these categories is called Expertise, and there's very limited information about it. That's just what the developers are currently using as a name right now, and it's probably subject to change.

As you fight and train your character, you'll be gaining expertise relevant to the types of weapons, armors and combat moves you're utilizing. Based on the research I've been doing, I'm unsure if the Expertise you gain that allows your character to level is directly related to when you gain expertise for your skills, or if it's calculated separately (for example, if you max out a weapon style, can you level your character with it?).

In the last sentence I said "weapon style" because we will be gaining expertise in a particular combat style through the type of weapon that we're using. This allows you to upgrade the quality of the weapon that you're using, without forgetting the expertise you gained from using that weapon STYLE.
Some examples of the weapon styles that will be available in TESO include:

-1 handed weapon and shield
-1 handed and rune (magic)
-dual wield (including runes or 1-handed weapons)
-2 handed weapon
-bow and arrows
-Fire staff
-Lightning staff
-Ice staff
-Heal staff

Zenimax is most likely requiring us to use Runes instead of allowing us to have a separate page for spells to both streamline the menus to make it easier for people to set up their character, and to also limit how many spells we can carry at one time, rather than having hundreds of them like in previous Elder Scrolls games. We'll be able to use 2 runes that are the same or different, but we're unsure if you're receive a bonus for wielding 2 of the same spell like in Skyrim.

There are apparently a total of 8 ranks that can be achieved with each of the above combat styles, allowing you to become more proficient in them by unlocking both active and passive abilities than can be utilized in combat.

Here is what can be unlocked from the first level of training with a 1 handed weapon and shield, examples of the perks that can be obtained:

-Stalwart (passive) - reduce stamina cost of blocking 80
-Crippling Strike - deals 18 physical damage snare for 20% for 5 seconds and stacks up to three times
-Passive Aggressive (passive) - reduce stamina cost of blocking by 20%

We've all been told that we'll be nowhere close to finished leveling our weapons when we reach 50, so it's probably going to take upwards of 15-20 levels to train 1 weapon type to it's maximum potential. Assuming it takes this long per weapon style, and knowing that there are approximately 10 weapon combinations, that will result in hundreds of hours of gameplay!

As for armor training, we haven't been provided with much information because people simply haven't told us or asked questions about it.
Other than light, medium and heavy which are useful for boosting magicka, stamina and health respectively, we're unsure if or how receiving damage in these armors effects how much Expertise you gain in them.

Leveling your character as a whole will be very similar to Skyrim, in that you gain 15 points per level that you can place into the attribute for Health, Stamina and Magicka. This can be done a total of 49 times (you start at level 1 without a perk) until you reach the current maximum level of 50. As you reach level 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 for each stat, you will receive a passive perk that can help you in combat regardless of circumstances. You will also gain new special moves related to your class type that can be used depending on the weapon styles you've chosen. The developers expect their players to go from level 1-50 in approximately 125-150 hours total.

This being said, you should obviously attempt to plan out your last remaining levels in TESO to make sure you unlock as many perks for your character to use as possible. For example, everyone should raise their Health/Stamina/Magicka levels to 2 when they first start the game because it will unlock a total of 3 passive perks by the time you reach level 4. Our maximum level for any of the stats can be calculated using the formula (24 * 15 =) 360 + Starter Level. The starter levels for our Health in Skyrim is 50, but it was determined with a formula in Oblivion and Morrowind that placed it normally between 40-60, and varied anywhere from 50-100 for Stamina/Magicka.

One example of maximizing how many perks you unlock would be to place 24 perks into Health (Level 25), 14 perks into either Stamina (Level 15), and the remaining 11 into the final attribute (Level 12). This would unlock more perks than if you had chosen to spread them evenly into Stamina and Magicka, making the levels 14 and 13 instead because you wouldn't have reached the required level to active the next available perk in either attribute.

Thanks for reading; if you have any more information in relation to leveling systems in TESO, please feel free to share it with the rest of us!

Feel free to post them and I'll try to answer them as best I can.

I've found this information from listening and taking notes, and I have a lot of information that is slightly relevant to this article, but I'm planning on releasing it in others where it's more relevant.

Also, even if I don't know the answer, there may be other people who can use their personal MMO or ES experience to help supply one!

Great post. Thanks for the info on getting max perks.
Oh and would you happen to know if there will be things to help us advance faster such as the standing stones in Skyrim?
I really don't think there would be and I really hope there isn't but though I would just ask.

I know for a fact that there will indeed be standing stones, although I don't have the time right now to find the source that claims it.

I have a feeling that they'll be reworking them to ensure that none of them are overpowered though, and if they are we'll let them know during Beta testing to be reworked before the official release.

Well-written - for a Bosmer!

Do you know:

1. If Magicka/Stamina/Health will be redistributable later? If so, what venue of cost are they considering for this change?

2. If improvement in one style slows subsequent style improvement? This could be vertical or horizontal in nature, perhaps both.

3. If the more stamina perks one accrues, the more potent perks of that sort may be accessed?

I don't really understand this whole "get perks based on what stats you upgrade" system. I thought the point was to play however you want. This just makes it seem like there's a right and wrong way to choose things because why wouldn't you want the most perks.

Moot point.

Even without perks, choosing your stats a certain way could lead you to builds with less viability via specialization vs. generalization. Perks may actually make the playing field more level than it was by granting some hybrid benefit to people spreading themselves thin.

Your post made me laugh, it almost blinded me when I first saw it with all that color! Laughing

1. This is more speculation, but it would seem to me that those three would NOT be redistributable due to the fact that adding a specific number to each attribute results in unlocked perks. It would essentially allow people to abuse the system by moving around perks based on what they know their opponent will be like, and will inevitably cause more harm than good. Players should try to predict what type of character they want to be, but will still be allowed to use all weapons... just not as effectively as others who have spent the time to master particular skillsets.

2. I believe you're referring to the leveling system being on a curve, which it most likely will be. For example, the leveling system of Skyrim is (Current level + 3) * 25, aka 100exp for level 2, 125 more for level 3, etc. Our total levels will most likely work in a similar fashion, meaning that it might be a good idea to spend your first 30 skillpoints evenly throughout the 3 attribute pools to unlock as many passives as possible to use for efficient training. This will also give you a good idea of what you want your character to become, and allows you to work from there.

3. The answer to this should be yes, in that the more perks you invest into a specific attribute, the more powerful the unlocked passives will be. I believe that I heard that these passives will stack with each other, but I'm not 100% sure.
