This will be a series of installments that I will try to add to fairly regularly. Any questions, suggestions, or feedback is welcome.

An Old Friend

I.No News

Six months. That’s how long it had been since Zimilael had heard any news. The last letter he received spoke of old magic, but it was nothing that Zimilael had heard of before. “Why would he go alone? Why would he not send me, or allow me to accompany him?” These questions haunted the young mage day in and day out. Each day that passed, he grew more concerned for the well being of his elderly friend.

Arius Maro was both Zimilael’s best friend and mentor. Besides Cyntana, he had been the only one who truly believed in the skills of Zimilael as a Mage. “Everyone sees me as a story teller and a poet. A fate I brought upon myself. Not a soul seems to believe that I may actually possess some skill as a mage.” This was his confession to Arius, who had been his mentor these past seven years, one he would later admit to Cyntana as well.

Everything he knew about magic, he owed to the mentorship of Arius Maro, an extremely gifted wizard. He had once held a position as an instructor at the Arcane University in the Imperial City, but those days were long behind him. Arius was reaching the end of his years, and he always spoke of the last journey he would ever take.

“I’m saving my strength, elf.” That was often the reply Zimilael would receive when asking if Maro would accompany him on his journeys. “If you don’t mind me saying, sir, you’re only getting older. Soon you’ll have no strength left!” But he should’ve known better. He should’ve known that the strength he spoke of was strength of mind, not body. If he was to make this last trip, he would need his wits about him.

It had been forty years since his wife died. The Breton responsible had disappeared from Cyrodiil and taken his magic with him. But reports of missing merchants and traders from the area near Leyawiin signaled to Maro, that history may be repeating itself. In addition, the dreams had begun again. The dreams consisted of people with no faces chasing him through the Imperial City. These were the people that were missing, but he didn’t know how he knew that.

If it were true that he had returned, this may be his only chance to confront the man that killed his wife, and perhaps destroy it. He wouldn’t miss this opportunity. He wouldn’t miss the chance to find the thing that took his love from him and so many others. So he made the journey, leaving young Zimilael behind. He used to write every week, telling of his time near Leyawiin, and what he was finding out.

Six months. It had been six months with no news. But then there was a letter. This letter was not like the others. It was simply a set of instructions. “This will most likely be the last you hear of me. Find Apelles Valus. You will find him in your beloved Bruma. Tell him it has returned and is stronger than before. He will know what to do. A word of caution: unless you want to lose her, do not bring Cyntana. Here is your chance to prove yourself a worthy mage.”

It made no sense to Zimilael. What did Maro find? Why was he being so short? None of these answers would be found in the letter. If he were to find the answer to these puzzles, he would need to find Apelles. And so began his journey to find an old friend.

Hey Zim, getting back to you on that feedback request!

I like how this story gives some insight into Zimilael's persona and relationships, despite the subject of the story being his mentor, Arius Maro. It gives us an better idea of Zimilael and why he must pursue the instructions of this mysterious letter. This installment sets up the series well and provides some intrigue onto the plot.

In terms of imporvement, it becomes slightly vague on who is saying what during the "saving strength" paragraph as well as who is the subject of the paragraph after. For slight clarity purpose, you may wish to say Maro's name to distinguish that it is his last journey to find his wife's murderer rather than Zimilael's. Of course this could just be me that's getting confused, so take another look at it and see if you agree.

Anyways, I see you are already at work adding to the series! I'll be sure to read those as well soon enough. Good luck and keep up the writing!
