I really want to be an Archer but I found the hits too basic. No head shots and you didn't have to aim directly at the opponent just in the general direction.

I decided to build a soc instead.

Anyone else feel the same or is there more to it than that?

Archery definitely seems lackluster at the early levels but can be devastating once you level it up. Sorc skills are much more powerful than archery at lower levels but it is also mana based rather than stamina based. Not a bad idea to develop archery in addition to sorc skills.

I might just do that.

Build up a Sorcerer and use a bow as secondary weapon then level that bad boy up when at a higher level.

I only got to level 10 on the beta, couldn't bare to waste too much time on there knowing that the character would reset.

When I was playing beta I was playing a templar tank and I experienced some serious archery envy. I was just feeling like I was struggling to keep up with everyone else especially the archers. "those archers have all the fun with their fancy bows and their cool hairdos and makeout parties." but i made some changes to my playing and slogged my way through levels 9-13 and suddenly at level 14 I felt i turned the corner and was suddenly much more effective. but i think all builds/classes are going to experience plateaus or wimpy phases. i really like the parity between the classes. everyone seems pretty equally effective/ineffective.

dizzy, you mentioned you didn't have to aim. i think the aiming of combat needs some fixin'. my own experience with aiming seemed wonky. i'd aim my one handed weapon power attacks with the reticule right on my opponent and i'd whiff a lot of them time even though the aim was dead on. but a lot of times my oppents would have attacks that would be aoe cones or circles and i'd jump totally out of the cone or circle well before the attack went off and i'd still be whammied by the attack. what's up with that?

A few things here:

When it comes to "mouse click" damage (light and heavy attacks), they are relatively weak compared to weapon abilities and class abilities for that matter.

What I would suggest for any non-ranged character would be to at least keep a bow (or staff, if that's your thing) handy for the times when your only option for attack is ranged. Even if you don't put points into Bow abilities and passives, it's better than standing around doing nothing.

You can also use most or all of your class abilities using a Bow, which can be a nice back up for your second hot bar on swap -- even if it's not the primary weapon you want to use, it gives you needed versatility if you're melee and most importantly, it gives you another resource to deal damage if you run out of Magicka.

You could use a staff for a ranged weapon but staff abilities use Magicka, all the other weapons use stamina.

I have to agree with the idea of using Sorcery skills along with bow. But not for attack spells. I've been enjoying a Bow/Sorc since beta using bow for attack and sorc for utilities such as Crowd control, Summoned Pet, and Buffs. Plus adding majority of my points into stamina, by level 10 my character felt much more powerful and capable soloing. This build also works well with a melee alt using the storm calling skill line.

My templar tank uses a bow most often, with heavy armor and mild stam stat boosts. His alt weapon is one hand/shield. Bows seem to be the most popular.

I have a sorc who uses bow and all medium armor for stamina, only using magicka for summons and the occasional armor boost for self when the clannfear doesn't tank well enough.
