Assassinating the Dark Brotherhood

Here's a suggestion for TES VI: assassinate the Dark Brotherhood.

So you know how in Skyrim, you had the option to destroy the Dark Brotherhood? And how it was one quest long and really easy, as compared to the longer and much more interesting DB questline itself?

What I'm suggesting is the creation of a new questline for the next game (really, it would have worked in Skyrim, but too late for that). The PC comes into contact with the DB, but instead of joining them, he/she decides to turn against them. With the help of an anti-DB organization/informant/loved one of a DB victim, they slowly but surely hunt down DB assassins one by one, culminating in an assault on the local sanctuary.

For added enjoyment, perhaps the local guards don't know that the assassins are assassins. To them, it just looks like murder. Because of this, you'll have to kill on the sly, without getting detected. You get all the fun of being a stealthy assassin without the moral qualms of murdering innocents. And, of course, you can still join the DB if you want to be evil.

(Of course, none of this would be canon, because there'd have to be a DB in future games. But you could still play it.)

What do you think? Does it sound like fun?

Interesting concept. It would be cool to be an assassin for the good guys.

That would definitely be interesting.
Perhaps you could hire the Brotherhood to assassinate somebody at X time/location, but set an ambush to kill the assassin, or counter-stealth to prevent his assassination and succeed in your own.

Could even infiltrate the Brotherhood itself but tip off the guards/target so that the assassinations fail. Eventually building up to a "We've got a rat" situation. Perhaps by then you've gained enough trust that you could pin the blame on somebody else and watch as the inner sanctum crumbles.

I imagine the quest ideas for a theme like this would be endless, but it'd definitely be a lot of fun.

I think it's a good idea, but I do have to say I don't think the dark brotherhood is evil as much as they are just amoral. In the end hunting them would be no more wrong or right then what they do unless you specifically just guarded against them. Hunting them down with vengeance or a vindictive nature is basically the same is most likely no better than what they do even if you could call it justice it still amounts to blood for blood. No one is an assassin for the good guys even in games were they portray that there is always another side to the story taking justice into your own hands is sometimes fine and can make sense, but when you do it through the sabotage and back handed deals the lines get blurry very quickly and sight of who is bad or good becomes objective as most people are good in their own eyes including the dark brotherhood and the morag tong among others. Essentially with that topic you end up with is it for the greater good or is it not and many others like that leave it up to every individual to determine it. In my opinion I see the Dark Brotherhood as necessary just as the Morag Tong and I see them as groups that fill a purpose that whether you like it or not is needed in Tamriel.

^ Fair enough. "He who fights monsters" and all that.

Still, I feel a whole lot better about killing Astrid than I do about killing Narfi.

Arguably you reunited Narfi with his sister and you freed him from his prison of a broken mind and horrible addictions you gave him peace in a way if you look at it in the grand scheme of the quality of his life and what was left of him. He was a shell and he was lost without the one person left who loved him so why not set him free. Astrid was a particularly selfish and bad member of the DB in my opinion Lucien Lachance will always be one of the members who exemplifies what they should be. There are other examples I can not remember by name from oblivion such as the argonian female and male who are shadow scales. Another one would be Nazir all these individuals value the family they have honor and they hold themselves in that way.

Honestly i would rather see anew vigilante-type faction rise up in the next elder scrolls game with one of their goals begin to take out the Dark Brotherhood by assassinating but doing much more also such as trying to take down the thieves guild, corrupt politicians/military personal etc etc. Would be an interesting quest line for sure and also other guilds/factions can have quest lines trying to take out/distract/weaken this new vigilante faction.

DB are the good guys. They kill for religion, and kill those others wish dead. The morag tong does the same, but they get contracts on criminals only. DB for virtual life man.

This doesn't sound like enough content to be a main quest. It sounds more like guild-quest sized.

My vote for TES:VI is one about deposing (or for the "bad" guys, supporting) the Thalmor in the Summerset Isles. However, I don't think it's going to happen for VI, since there has already been some noise about Akavir as a setting or theme.

Murdering innocents? Oh no, they are not innocent. They're simply chosen by the dread father, sithis, to die!

But seriously though I like the idea.

Also the DB's connections across Tamriel is crazy. In oblivion(many years ago) I robbed a member of the brotherhood and was a little nervous... Then I realized oblivion didn't have a mechanic like that...
