Do you think there will be a class that comes under this title? In lord of the rings online there's bards, they tend to be healers and use instruments that bolster the hp of character which is called "Morale". I was wondering whether something similar or entirely different will be in the game as my character is planning to be a skald, a nordic bard.

Well, we haven't had any music based skills in TES that I know of, so I doubt it.

the bard is a typicall class for ES.
And typicall for bards they suck at everything.

In daggerfall they were known as the most rediculously useless class.

Any suggestions on how they could be improved, or what exactly they did? In relation to how they may be included in TESO?

Well, I dont know about how it would play into TESO, but Ive seen bards made effective for PvE by giving them the ability to affect creatures with their music. (ie. calming, distracting, controlling, etc)

As I said, this was more effective for PvE than it was PvP (except for taking people out of combat mode, which doesnt exist anymore really). I also cant say how it would fit into the lore, since thats not my area of expertise. It is an effective way that its been done in the past though. There were balance issues with it that would need worked out too.

edit: I guess @Sordak answered the lore part

Well if bard class will be in the game then the most specific assumption would be a class that focuses on crowd control, just as Balkoth said. In morrowind and oblivion bard was a medium armored sword and board user, but that seems to be irrelevant in TESO.
In my opinion if they want to pick a class from ES games that focuses on crowd control, they pick bard, altough nightblade sounds like something similar too.

If they make bards, please don't make them play some ridiculous flute or guitar like Rift did. I want typical chanter bards back (like Shadowbane had).

"Pen and paper" RPG bards are skilled with illusions, lesser heals and aoe sustained buffs. It could be used as suport heal/suport buff roles. But I don't think it would fit at gameplay we are expecting.

Bard

Specialization: Stealth
Attributes: Intelligence, Personality
Skills: Alchemy, Blade, Block, Illusion, Light Armor, Mercantile Speechcraft

(Oblivions Bard class)

They don't have to suck. It's how you customize them - there are lots and lots of opportunities and ways to customize a class to a class of your own. If you focus on Light Armor, Speechcraft, Illusion and pretty much all the stuff above you can turn out to be quite a bad ass player.

I would also put marksman on that list to get a more all round offense. The skald is quite an interesting class, I chose for my character to be skald. But he probably won't be exactly like one when it comes to his class.

generaly bards in MMORPGs tend to be buff machines.
In other words they are realy boring to play.

Dirge in Everquest 2 was probably the most atrocious example.

As Sordak said, even though a Bard is an interesting and in theory useful class to play and have around, most games that have implemented them in the past made them really boring to play. Which is sad - I have nothing against the concept and as for ES, it's even rather fitting. If they give us a class like a bard/skald, I hope they make them interesting to play, with a twist of sorts. Standing in the back of your group spamming 3 types of buffs is something nobody is asking for.

I agree with the above responses:

A Bard in the sense of a guild to join/quest line to follow, or even a crafting skill? Great.
RPing a thief archtype as a traveling Bard? Cool.
A Bard as a class or combat specialization? Meh.

The only "Bard" I've ever played that was worthwhile was the healing class in LotRO.

Yea LOTRO did bards ok, and some of the much older games like UO had bard classes that were viable, as a class.

As long as there is a difference between musicians as a 'hobby' and bards as a class, I'm fine.
