Alright, so I'm planning out one of my PCs at the moment. He's an unconventional Altmer academic whose thirst for knowledge has led to him becoming a roving Indiana Jones-style adventurer/scholar. As such, his fighting style is towards the swashbuckler style. You know how it is; swing in on a rope, rattle off a one-liner, duel the bad guy, escape with the girl. We're not straight-up berserking through mobs, nor are we blowing stuff up from a distance.

My question is, what class should he be? He's not so strong and tank-y as to be a dragonknight, not so stealthy as to be a nightblade, not so magic-oriented as to be a sorceror, and not paladin-y enough to be a templar.

A character like this could probably work with any class if I was creative enough, but figuring out which class works best ahead of time would certainly be an advantage.

Of course, it may be that the play style I'm imagining just simply won't be attainable in-game. What do you think?

I'd say dual wield dragon knight in medium armor with an emphasis on weapon skills. The dk skill lines will give you some survivability in the draconic power/earthen heart trees, and the dual wield weapon skills should give you that feel you're looking for. I'd also say bow for a second weapon, with an emphasis on those weapon skills as well.

The kd also has a whip skill which could be cool for your character. But I also was thinking Templar could work because it's less offensive orientated as a DK, but again you'd focus on weapon and world skills. The plus for being a Templar is having some self heals to keep yourself up. It'd help with the roving sort of style

Fight for something to die for, because living for nothing really isn't worth it.

Forgot about the whip, good call. Templar would be good too.
