So, we know that the Argonians have gills and their tails and stuff make them excellent swimmers. So, theoretically, couldn't some Argonians be living in the waters just off Tamriel, thriving in a completely underwater society?

Dar'Rak: Khajiit assassin, son of the Mane, at your service. But not really.
Im-Kur: Argonian Nightblade, killer of men, caster of spells.

Theoretically, yes. But that would force them to leave the Hist, which I'm not so sure they would do.

Take a look at this quote from the EUSP Wiki: "The earliest inhabitants of the Black Marsh and its environs are believed to have been the Hist, great life-giving trees of unknown capacities. The region presently known as Black Marsh was once part of a much greater landmass within the domain of the Hist, but the greater part of the region was flooded during the wanderings of the humanoid Mer races. The Hist were bystanders in the Ehlnofey war, but most of their realm was destroyed as the war passed over it. A small corner of it survived to become Black Marsh in Tamriel, but most of their realm was sunk beneath the sea."
Since the Hist were such powerful beings, they could have adapted to life underwater, and thus inhabit the land that sunk, along with perhaps a new breed of Argonians? And besides, while Argonians are loyal to the hist, aren't there Argonian travelers all throughout Tamriel who have left Black Marsh for one reason or another? Perhaps there were some Argonian Pioneers who settled in the waters to avoid conflict, seeking shelter in the waters where no other race could reach.

It could happen, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda, or ZOS for that matter, worked it into the lore. But seeing as the Argonians are based off of the Aztecs, I think a floating city might be a bit more appropriate. That way if they do ever make a game set in Black Marsh, any race could access it

If they had a city underwater they would be like the Gungans from Star Wars :D

Consider this - just because Argonians can spend a lot of time underwater without dying doesn't necessarily mean they find the idea of always being underwater pleasant or feasible. They also enjoy being on land and communing with the Hist. The underwater survival abilities help them in extreme situations but probably don't represent something they'd want as a permanent state of living.

i actually created a thread proposing this very same idea on Tamrielfoundry not to long ago... i thought if they went to the ocean.. they would be relatively safe (who knows what monsters lurk in the depths) but they could have a whole different culture or could have evolved over time to a completely new race(think dunmer to altmer etc etc.)... imagine that a new type of Argonian?!

I tend toward this. Has to be considered how Argonian culture has developed, which as far as I can tell, is mostly a land based society. There would be numerous challenged with switching a society to live entirely underwater when it has been fashioned through generations as land dwelling.

I doubt they will have any underwater cities, and they said that argonians won't be able to go underwater at all like everyone else in ESO. But even then, lore might add a couple hidden bases underwater for temporary planning, but we will see cities in the sky before they're underwater. Their gills are more of a survival or leisure thing than a way of life, remember they are lizard people, not fish.

I am in the Sacred Order guild, I fight for them and Ebonheart Pact only. I plan to take charge as General in Ebonheart Pact, as I plan to go to victory in all battles and war. Those who follow me will see what I see, those who do not, will see the ground they lay face-down on.
