So this subject comes up a lot, especially among those new to the scene:

How does one go about creating a new and compelling RP character?

What is the process for coming up with a new character? What is that flash of inspiration that catches hold of your interest and doesn't let go? How do you even begin to form a character concept that you'll stick with for the long term? Where does one even begin? I figured with our extensive RP community, with its many diverse characters, members could contribute their methods that could help those just starting out. I'm sure everyone has their own way that works for them, but it may also work for others! So feel free to share.

My inbox has been bombed with questions regarding this, which inspired me to write a guide which I'm currently rounding up. When I've finished it I'll chime in here, too ^^

I think it's important that characters have CLEAR weaknesses. There is nothing more frustrating than a character that has god-like power. Having a weaknesses makes the character seem more real and relate-able to the reader in my opinion.

Also, along those same lines, I believe that characters should have some challenges that will affect how they RP in certain situations. For instance if a character has a negative personality, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that character might have challenges teaming up with other adventurers, or getting information from the streets might be difficult too. It could also be something like how the loss of a loved one might affect the character. Good challenges give the character a stronger personality I think.

Listing some goals is good too, because it will give readers a sense of what motivates the character.

Sugar + Water + Purple

Do'Shanji - Khajiit warrior
Roac Bellecot - Redguard farmer
Jaree-Tah - Argonian agent

Definitely some good advice on what makes a compelling character, Grape Drank! Often the struggle itself is what makes a story interesting, if the protagonist doesn't seem to have any issue overcoming any obstacles then that sense of urgency is lost and things don't seem that particularly dangerous or challenging. Goals and motivations are also good things to have, as it says why the character does what he/she does!

But how do you go about creating such a character in the first place? Where's your starting point to making this dynamic and motivated character? This is often the first roadblock in the way of those new to the scene!
