So this just popped up on the ESO Facebook:

"The ESRB advised us that it has given The Elder Scrolls Online a Mature rating. While we may disagree with the ESRB’s determination, we do not plan to challenge the rating, and we are unwilling to change the game’s content to achieve a different rating. The game we have created is the one we want our fans to be able to play.

As a result of the ESRB rating, we are in the process of promptly updating everything with the required rating and age gates, including game trailers, web sites, and ads. Thanks for your understanding. We can’t wait to welcome players into The Elder Scrolls Online soon."

So, a rated M game after all. I'm personally more than okay with this - it allows for more mature content, less cartoonyloony stuff, and I think I'm allowed to say as much as that during the beta it was kind of obvious they prefered a more mature feel over a WoWesque, childish feel, so I think the new rating is justified. Thoughts?

I'm really happy about this rating. We've actually had a talk about this before and this is where I want the game's direction to go. And without breaking NDA, I got the feeling a couple of times that certain sequences might not be suitable for a younger audience.

Let's hope that this lets ZOS push their creativity a little bit more in terms of what they give us during storylines. Much more freedom to be had with a rating like this.

I don't see what made them change the game to M but I hope they can darken then game or something at some point to go with that little M. But lets be honest, no one these days pays attention to ratings on games unless it's AO.

I wonder what is the reason they gave it M rating. It's not particularly gory and from what I've seen it manages to stay away form more "mature" aspects of Elder Scrolls world (no Muatra here, Vehk). I mean, even the whole "King of rape" portfolio of Molag Bal has been successfully glossed over.

I think they should use the opportunity and introduce more adult version of Tamriel, like real Barenziah, cannibalistic Bosmer and psychopathic, elf-slaying rampaging aedric cyborgs from the future. Who'd say no to this?

95% of MMO players, unfortunately.

I'm very happy, and maybe now they can look at some other creatures and make them look more "M" if you would.

Yeah, I was expecting this. There are a lot of content that touches on mature rating even from the start. Now they can flesh out a little more without worry.

Oh, please... Cannibalistic Bosmer, yum :D

Age of Conan had a justified rating. But TESO? I guess the people that gave "M" rating have access to more content than beta testers and they may have found out some Earthly Delights tavern and then some.

Well I wanted the dance bars from original Morrowind so now there is a better chance of finding a topless skooma tavern...I have no idea what "M" means however. Let us see what google says about this strange NA custom.

MATURE

Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. May contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.

May contain violence...LOL... It is going to be genocide on a massive scale and that will just be the monsters! Cryodiil will be a bloodbath.

My 9 year old daughter is still going to want to play...guess she can grow a beard and speak with a deep voice and play as a Dwemer.
