So...pretty simple.

Oblivion....Rated M
Skyrim.....Rated M

Only "triple A MMO"...rated M...Age of Conan.

Every single other MMO is rated Teen.

So, has Zenimax stated for sure whether they are going to have a M rating or not?

Would appreciate a link or point to interview where it was stated.

I'd like to thiink it will be a Rated M...but, so appeal to the most amount of players, they may decide to tone it back enough to get the T rating instead, which means quite a bit to myself, as having a M rating is one of the big pluses to myself.

It is Rated M, the game requires you to be age 18+ to play.

It is written in the NDA, under the section that explains which subjects will be carried over when the NDA is removed. and one of the sections is Age 18+

thats for the testing.
Im fairly sure that they will roll for 13+
weve seen no blood so far. and the artstyle looks rather cutsey.

Theyd realy have to pull some gruesome shit right now to get an 18+ rating. Or boobs.

11. Continuing Effect. The provisions of Sections 1, 2(b-d inclusive), 3, 4, 6-14 inclusive shall survive termination of this Agreement.

1. .. (ii) You are 18 years of age or older as of the Effective Date; (iii)

Taken directly out of the NDA itself. The game will be 18+ which gives it a M rating.

Zenimax can't rate their own game (they can, but it's not official). Only the ESRB can rate officially, and they have not released a rating yet. While it is plausible that it will either be M or T, that NDA clause is not definitive proof.

I believe you're looking at it in the wrong direction. The company restricting age says nothing about the rating (e.g. 18+ could be full of flowers and sunshine, but it's the company's right to do so). However, the rating says everything about the possible age restrictions (e.g. ESRB rates a game M, so the company cannot let anyone under 18 play it without parental approval even if they WANT to sell it to minors).

It's not unheard of for beta to simply require you to be a legal adult do to the requirements of the NDA. In fact, I'd question ZeniMax's legal team if that term wasn't in there. The problem is that in a closed beta, you are being given the ability to see confidential things. A minor, AkA someone under the age of 18, has the right to repudiate the contract. This means they can effectively say "opps, I want to tell everyone how awesome this is now. Sorry!" and ZeniMax pretty much has zero legal recourse.

That's why that condition is there. It shouldn't be taken as proof that the game will or will not receive a specific rating. As Aryth pretty much said, not even ZeniMax can tell you what the games rating will be. Only the ESRB can.

Correct, the only reason that 18+ part is there is because it involves signing a legal contract, which you must 18+ to do. I recently tried to get a membership at our local Sam's Club, but I couldn't sign the contract, because i'm a minor.

I will bet that TESO will be rated T for teen. I think this because it is a smarter marketing strategy. They will most likely get more players with a T game than a M game. Minors will want to play this game just as much as legal adults, and not having a rating of M won't push a lot of players out. If someone isn't going to play this game SOLELY for the reason of it not having a M rating, then that person is..... different I guess. Also, we have to remember that Oblivion was rated T first, but user-created mods depicting nudity got the ESRB in a fit and they bumped it up to M. I believe the deciding factor on Skyrim's rating was the execution by decapitation in the beginning. Don't quote me on that I could be wrong. However, in the gameplay that we have seen, the violence doesn't look gorey at all. In the Alliances trailer, we see soldiers getting stuck with arrows, and there isn't blood splattering and gore falling out. Which I'm glad for, as it would be WAY unrealistic to see intestines falling out and blood flowing like a river from an arrow wound. Unless it hit a major artery and the soldier yanked it out..... anyway, I'm off topic. From my perspective, I believe it will be T for teen, but, we'll just wait and see.

Here's an idea I've never seen done before - What if there's literally a T and an M client? T client simply is locked out of the more gory graphics animations/uses lower quality ones? Your license key could determine what settings the client allows you to have.

I don't know if that would fly with ESRB though since the gory M content would still be on the disc, unless you simply didn't have it on the T for Teen boxes.

(Sidenote, yes, I think pigs will fly before this happens, but I think it's an interesting idea nontheless)

Well, the ESRB would probably mandate that the gory data not be present anywhere on the disk. Then, the concern becomes is it worth producing two versions of the game? It's not like a movie (i.e. Taken, which had an R-rated and PG-13-rated version in theaters at the same time), where simple editing can remove the content completely or make the content fall in the legal boundaries of the previous level. It's possible, but very difficult to accomplish for a game of this size, in my opinion.

Not Set

I honestly think its gonna be Teen. For a reason that's really simple: This game is not going to have all the features of other Elder scrolls games. I doubt this game will have blood or head chopping etc.

I agree with a lot of you. Bare this in mind, half the horror movies come out as PG-13 so a larger demographic can "enjoy" (by enjoy i mean more people can support the cause and spend money) But a larger audience in this case sure does support the cause. =P some things are a necessary evil.
Personally I'd love for a rating of Mature. Secondly, where there is a will, there is a way. People are going to play regardless of rating when they want to. Fact.

Thats clearly for the beta. Look at the other information listed. Anyways its required for any game that beta testers be 18+. Plus who would want a kid to beta test their game over an adult.

I beta tested swtor the NDA required that I be 18+ but the game was rated teen.

AoC isn't the only M-rated game, so is Funcom's newest MMO, The Secret World (cursing, topless demons, playing with entrails, etc).
Tera also gets an M-rating by the ESRB (though the EU version got PEGI 12 because Europe is cooler then the US is).

Still, it is correct that most MMOs are Teen rated. And it is true that ZeniMax can't rate their own game, but they can accurately predict the rating based on the content.
