22 August, 2013: Video footage is on this page

In this video Matt Firor mentions that there will be a cash shop where you can purchase: "Fun stuff and services, like name changes".

Information taken from the interview

Matt Firor says that they're going with a standard subscription model, so you buy the game, you get thirty days for free and then its 14.99 dollars, 12.99 Euro's, 8.99 pounds per month after that.

Question: Many companies have something extra, such as "cash shops" and "bonus points", will TESO have this?

They won't have "Bonus points" but there will be a shop where you can purchase fun stuff and services to like name changes and things like that, buts its not part of the core game. Anything that's part of the core game is included with the subscription price.

Why subscription?

They've put a lot of thought into this, mostly the reason was around the fact that its an Elder Scrolls game. So, if you think of your Skyrim and Oblivion experience, its not going into a dungeon and then a window pops up saying you need to pay $2 dollars to get into the dungeon, that's just not, its not the way the IP works, its freedom, we would have to have changed the way the IP itself is seen, its a big sandbox, the way you make a big sandbox is you take care of the payment outside of the game.

Thought there were "no pay gates!". Wonder if they are gonna make us pay for DLC in the future!

Ugh okay.

As long as it is purely a shop for services like name changes and cosmetics, I'm okay with it. If it has stuff like XP boosters/crafting boosters/all that stupid stuff, I'll be displeased.

Agreed, Triskele. With a subscription we are supposed to be supplied with everything that we will need to play, advance and win. There should be absolutely no need for XP Boosts or Health pots or anything leveling-related. We are paying a monthly fee to earn our own way in the game .... not buy it.

Cosmetics could be fun within reason ... no shocking pink hair. Mohawks, etc. are okay.

Damn it. They better not sell special mounts or other dumb looking shit. If there's one thing I hated in WoW it was the celestial steed

Agreed, even the cosmetics and fluff should be kept to a lore-appropriate minimum. No true TES-fan wants their game filled with purple afro-do's (I love your fro @tecca, I do <3) and glittery unicorns.

My fro isn't purple. And it's lore appropriate for people with curly hair. >_>

I really don't like this market. But stuff like mythic dawn robes or dark brotherhood armor would be the the least worst. If they sell shit like angel wings or swimming shorts im outta here

Hahaha I know, I know <3

My point is, you don't want something from a 70's disco running past you when you're playing a TES-game.

Well, when it comes to cosmetics and mounts, if the items from that shop can be found in the World (with a bit of grind), i dont mind, but if those are "unique" stuff, then how will it be? we pay sub every month with the promise that we get all the content and then they go and make a shop that we will haw to spent extra money to get thins that we are supposedly already payed for... :S. And what about that "premium" client support they mentioned, will it require a cash shop as well :S?

In the past 2 days we've seen that ZOS is getting a bit greedy. P2P is okay but this cash shop really irritates me

These companies want to make money. They took on this project for the sake of making money, and if there are multiple ways to do that, they will. Because they know they can get away with it.

As I posted in the other thread, this MMO had a huge back-up ever since it got announced. Not because it was amazing and special per se, but because of its original fanbase. TES is a keyterm here. Games that take a popular genre and /or universe, ensure a certain amount of players by default. Whether they flop or not after launch is a topic for later, what they kick off with will be severely boosted simply because of the fans.

For just another dime-in-a-dozen MMO with a freshly created universe a sub and a shop would go way too far. But again, ZoS does it because they can.

I know they can get away with it. But I still don't like a cash shop. It makes like 20% of the players look the same because they all bought their 'exclusive' gear at the cash shop

It looks like they're preparing for the future when they inevitably go f2p. Bet the cash shop already being in the game as it is will start off minimal, then gradually introduce all sorts of things none of us want to see, eventually working up to lockboxes (gambling boxes).

Oh, true. Such is the curse of a cash shop. But as long as it's purely cosmetic and not stuff with actual stats, I'm willing to endure it.

(AoC's shop nowadays allows you to buy a full level 5 PvP set without having played a single PvP match in your life. Go figure.*)

*I have this set :X
