Ok, I need some advice. I have been thinking about going vegetarian but I just don't know what to do! Are there any vegetarians, even any meat eaters, here that could give me advice what to do and so on? I just need to know stuff like is it hard if your whole family eat meat? Most likely no-one will reply to this topic but thanks in advance anyway!

Vegetarian? Why would I eat my food's food? Lol. Idk though, it depends to what degree you want to be a vegetarian. Certain diets would benefit from supplements to make up for the nutrients from meat that you could fall in short supply, such as protein

Finding a good variety of food might be tricky, depending. There's a good amount of things you can eat to have a perfectly balanced diet without eating a single piece of meat, but having those available to you... it's the main problem I have, I try as hard as possible to be vegetarian but the amount of food around where I am that doesn't have meat in it is... small, especially when I'm not at home at the time. It's a good thing I really, really like most of what little I can find that does fall under that category, but it also results in me (to give a specific example) getting sick of pasta pretty quickly sometimes. :p Of course, with me the main problem is finding small enough sizes of vegetables (and sometimes fruit) at the store that I can eat the whole thing before it starts going bad...

It sounds like you live with others, which means you'll have an easier time avoiding that last problem. Whether you can convince them to stock up on things enough to give you the amount of non-meat food you want (and of course to prepare vegetarian meals for you specifically) really depends on them, obviously you'll know better than me how that'd go. If you can, though, I think you'll be fine. Just keep variety in mind! That's the most important thing with any diet of course, but more so for a vegetarian one.

Also, the difference between vegetarian (just no meat) and vegan (no animal products of any kind) is important here. The latter is obviously quite a bit harder than the former, considering how limited you are. It's theoretically viable, though, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have significant moral reasons to do so.

Thanks to both of your advice. Well, I should probably have explained the situation more clearly to help people out. I live with one other person who wants to become a vegetarian, luckily, so getting vegetarian food would be easy. There is a shop near us with vitamin and protein tablets so I guess it wouldn't be too hard, I hope. I'm gonna dwell on it a bit, maybe even talk myself into it as I'm not reluctant. Thank you both again for your advice, it's helped!

If you're going full vegan, you'll want to find fruits/vegetables that give you protein. If not, milk, eggs, etc. should suffice. I think beans give you protein. I think whey and soy also have protein, so buy soy milk (if you can stand the taste; they have flavored kinds, which would be better, IMO) and maybe protein supplements, but only if you really need them.

Ugh. *wrinkles nose* That is by far my least favorite meat, and not liking meat very much is the main reason I avoid eating it so you can imagine how much I don't like it. <_<

Try to avoid pills if you can; there's a decent number of foods that aren't meat and have the protein and vitamins/minerals you'll need anyway. Try that at first and only go for supplements if you end up having deficiency issues anyway. The latter can end up causing other issues all its own.

I have to respectfully disagree, bacon is the single greatest food in existence. :)

Make sure you get all the required proteins, vitamins and stuff you usually get from meat only. There's bunch of things you can use, such as halloumi, soy among others. And it doesn't make much of a difference if one in the family is a vegetarian, but naturally that means you have to prepare meals that fit for your diet. The most major screw up would be not making sure you get all the required stuff, which could lead into malnutrition at worst.

Then, you can of course set your own limits, if you use dairy products or not for example.

I could never give up meat personally, but that doesn't stop me from eating a lot of stuff that vegetarians do. I would definitely suggest that you buy lots of fruit and nuts to snack on. That's what I do to eat healthy, but if you were going vegetarian it would provide you with some of the protein that you will be lacking.

Maybe if it's a taste issue you could just try different meats. I will rarely eat beef or ham but I love turkey. Lamb is also very good. Venison is good if it's processed correctly and there is always a huge variety of seafood to try. I personally really like fish, scallops and shrimp.

If I were giving up meat I would buy lots of rice and granola and whatnot. You will need some hearty foods to fill you up if you aren't eating meat.

Couple things I'll warn you about (based off of what I've heard): If you're starting from a high-meat diet and completely switching over all at once be ready for sudden strong cravings and a sick feeling for a while from eating completely different foods your body isn't used to. Think about what lines you're setting for yourself (many vegetarians are fine with poultry, eggs, fish, and shellfish). Making sure you get the protein will be MUCH easier with the inclusion of those (or a combination of them that fits your morals). If you don't want to keep those in your diet, I hope you like beans.

As for it being difficult if your family eats meat: it depends. Some families are less sympathetic and will just see you being dumb and will continue to cook their steak with (maybe) a small side of vegetables and expect you to come back around to being "normal". Other families will support your decision and make sure you have plenty to eat at any family gathering. It really depends on your situation.

Oh, and be ready to pretty much completely give up generic fast food places. Almost every meal, unless you find a couple restaurants nearby that allows for the vegetarian lifestyle (but some of them can get pretty pricey) will be made at home. Get friendly with vegetarian recipe websites. There will be few places that you can commonly go out to dinner that won't break the bank. Some places you can still go to though would be pizza (if you allow yourself dairy), Mongolian grills (the ones that let you make your own bowl), seafood places (if you allow yourself some sea-life), and other such places. Keep an eye out.

Hope you found this useful!

There is a lot of good replies on here and I can't say to terribly much on the subject other than I eat meat and my girlfriend is a Pescatarian at least I think thats how you spell it anyways basically I asked her what that was and why. After hearing her opinion it seems like the most viable option if you want to get all the stuff you need while still primarily only sticking to a healthier diet. Basically you only eat fish and no other meats and then everything else is fruits and vegetables. My only other suggestion is do not go Vegan and I don't mean to offend anyone if anyone is vegan, but it has been shown that typically that is unhealthy and can lead to being under weight now I am sure there are people who have found a way around that, but its no simple task and of all diets is probably the hardest to maintain. Being vegetarian can be really easy or being pescatarian or really any diet like that can be easy its just knowing what to eat and what not to eat and keeping tabs on it and always know that every once in awhile treating yourself with an old favorite food is not to bad of an idea. For example I know someone who is basically full on never eats meat and then every once in a while when they feel really like they want a treat we go get a burger or something and then its back to their normal diet.

Also if you do stick with this diet be careful if you ever change your mind and go back to meat you can get very very sick very easily if you to suddenly change your diet all of this should be done very gradually kinda like when you change any medication you have to be weened off. Anyways that is just my view good luck and just don't stress about it and do what you feel will make you feel best and what will make you feel healthy and good. Oh one last thing vitamins and pills and supplements be very careful most of those are total BS and just empty crap with nothing good for you in them and some of them in fact are harmful so try to find anything, but that and if you do find those check with a doctor or pharmacist before using them.

Personally, I am "ethical omnivore" but I applaud people for going all the way to vegetarian. Yeah, I would imagine its hard if your whole family eats meat. Probably similar to quitting alcohol and being in a family of Barney Gumbles. :P
