"H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies," Smedley told Game talk Live. "A world! Not just a little tiny server."

I've lost interest when the developers started to say "ganking" as if it's supposed to be a major part of the game's fun factor.

It's a FFA zombie survival MMO, people are going to shoot you for what you're carrying.

I understand that, and it's part of the reason why I'm not interested in it. The core concept of the game is Player vs. Player, which is fine if that's what people want, but for zombie survival games I'd expect the core concept to be about teamwork against the environment with possible PvP. Having your greatest enemy be other players and not zombies defeats the purpose entirely for me.

I can see that, but humans are inherently competitive and in our most dire times we tend to exploit others of our kind as they are the most likely to gather what is useful to us so those among us with the constitution prey upon the weaker or more diligent in said duties replicating this in a dire scenario like an apocalyptic event is a little more accurate and entertaining than the idea of everyone working together to fight some mindless horde.

Zombies are all together a pretty boring foe they are mindless they are empty and while slightly scary they are devoid of any real sense it is from the human threat and the desperation of a constant threat that the interesting part comes in the fact that we see the best and worst drawn out in everyone in broad strokes. A game that can even remotely get close to simulating that kind of idea is pretty compelling and almost not just a game, but a slight social experiment.

Sorry that was a really long winded explanation of things most likely no one cares about, but felt like saying it. Also @Tecca if it is any consolation the game is designed to have multiple servers with many focuses and many settings ranging from crafting, PvE, PvP, and RP and any combination with thousands of players per each server. So even if you are not interested with the main target and standard of the game they are including options and variations for every spectrum of the audience of course.

Sticking to traditional zombies (ie mindless and possibly sluggish) would indeed make it pretty bland as they're not so much of a threat. But nobody needs to stick with the traditional zombie. Looking at games like Left 4 Dead or movies such as 28 Days Later, those are capable of keeping things exciting as long as the AI is smart.

What I'm seeing with H1Z1 is simply a FPS with sandbox elements thrown in and zombies as the backdrop because everyone loves zombies. It seems a bit cheap. I'm unsure how the zombies will be in this game, but when I hear devs talking about players being more of a threat than zombies, I shrug. I love competition, but when the game's truly difficult part is players simply "ganking" each other, it loses its novelty. What's the point of the zombies at this point?

I'm only saying this with what little has been shown and what I've seen. My mind can be changed at any point if I see things that actually make this a unique experience, but so far all I'm seeing is a sandbox FPS with zombies thrown into the mix.

Gamers are unforgiving and are quick to move on. The little hype that has been thrown our way wasn't all that inspiring. Bit run of the mill stuff here. But hey, I see a lot of people interested in the game so I wouldn't worry about my opinion on it. I want my opinion to be wrong, because some of what I've read about is exactly what I want in certain games. I'll just have to wait for more information.

Have you played DayZ? As brutal as that games world is, its not about free-for-all lets shoot each other and have zombies tailing us from time to time. The concept evolves around surviving in the world, other players are a threat. But there are multiple instances where you decide to use words instead of bullets. Sure, some always shoot on sight, that's bound to happen. I admit my level of interaction varies from assisting some man by giving him food and ammo to shooting peoples kneecaps off, stopping their bleeding and making them crawl to the nearest town. But that's not it, the point is the thrill you get from playing in the world, knowing that death comes knocking, and all you can do is attempt to prolong the inevitable. I admit that there's so many things that can go wrong, ex if bullets aren't scarce, if there's no risk in firing that weapon, the level of random killing will rise. But what about if taking that shot is risky? Good examples in DayZ are that when you fire that gun, not only may you attract a horde of zombies, worst case scenario, you gain attention of a whole group of survivors armed to the teeth.

I suppose all we can do is wait for more information, but I personally suggest staying open to the concept. I've never had as much adrenaline in my blood playing a game as I've had in a game of this concept.

Yea I mean most of these games are not to different at least in concept to Roguelikes or things like Dark Souls high threshold for danger and tension to intensify the situation.

I do agree zombies can be made interesting, but it is and always will be the humans and what they do in the situations presented by it that is the most interesting because they have voices opinions and we can understand them and empathize with their loss and desperation more than we can with any zombie and we can be more afraid of them when we see what they are capable of even the good people can become killers and that is the most interesting thing.

I also do agree that it did seem a little like hey FPS with sandbox stuff and the most popular enemy we could think of they could have picked something better aliens or just made it apocalyptic with just humans and mutated wild life they could have done something different and made their game standout and I would have been a bit happier with that.

I defeintely think more information is needed, but I feel this is a game to watch closely cause if it makes it can help shift the MMO genre in the right direction. This is taking something that now as of DayZ has been proved to work and as Nehemia said creates an intense adrenaline filled ride. Now that it has been proven to work we have a big budget team who has made other games working on their version with more funding than DayZ could sadly ever hope for and that in it of itself is exciting to me.
