The Dissident Priests say that the Temple has always maintained a public face, represented by the Heirographa, and a hidden face represented by the Apographa. - The Progress of Truth

Name: Haelas Omeryn
Epithet: ‘the Apostate’
Race: Dunmer
Sex: Male
Born: 2E 527 3rd of Heartfire
Birthsign: The Lady

Religious Views: Haelas is a dissident Ordinator, and so practices worship of the Ancestors and the Tribunal, but only as Saints and Heroes, not as Gods. The teachings of Saint Veloth have become particularly important to him, as he is the Saint of spiritual seekers and outcasts.

Political Views: Haelas has great respect for both Nords and Argonians. They both practice their worship without recourse to a powerful priesthood and temple’s structure, the things he believes have become corrupted by avarice and love of power in the Tribunal Temple. Thus, he hopes that this alliance of convenience with be a spur for change in Morrowind.

Occupation: Dissident Warrior-Priest
Faction: Ebonheart Pact.

Appearance: Haelas is of average height and sleight musculature, 5’10 and 192 lbs, a body honed with much martial training and rigorous self discipline. His face is narrow and hard, with noticeable cheekbones and a narrow but strong jaw. It is softened by his frequent gentle smile. His eyes are crimson, and his skin is a dark ash grey. Haelas's hair is a grey-brown, shoulder length and tied behind his head, his jaw carries near constant stubble. He has the hand of the tribunal tattooed on his forehead in dark red, but a jagged scar seems to almost deliberately cross it out. He has another small scar on the bridge of his nose.

Equipment: Haelas wears a full suit of Bonemold Amour, largely unremarkable with the exception of a short crested helm with a full facemask, carved into the likeness of Saint Veloth. The crest is a dark crimson. He carries a threatening looking Ebony mace, with a slightly shorter haft and lighter head that one would expect from a two-handed weapon.

Personality: Haelas is above all a philosophical mer, well learned, serious and thoughtful. He always takes a second to consider the situation, weighing his actions, and is also a man of deep principle and conscious. The truth is his goal, though he readily admits that he is no saint, and understands the inherent subjectivity of many 'truths'. However, he still seeks to expose hypocrisy and evil wherever he can. He has the ability, however, of not acting with sanctimony or superiority, and is considerate and humble, but stern in adherence to his principles. He is no fanatic, however, and dislikes those who are. Nevertheless, he is devout in his worship of the Ancestors, Saints and Heroes of the Dunmeri. Haelas lacks any real sense of humour and in common with Dunmeri stereotype is rather dour and serious.

Philosophy: Haelas's philosophy is one of reason, and violence serves its purpose only when all other avenues are exhausted, though for beasts, daedra and the undead violence is needed. For Haelas, an action may be called right when it is driven by virtue. Virtues are, he recognizes, social, but they must be matters of balance and temperance. Each virtue is only the middle ground between vices, such as rashness and cowardice in the case of the virtue of courage. Virtues are often self evident, but they are also highlighted by the Saints and Heroes of the Dunmer. For this reason history has a key role in his philosophy, so they one may look back and be inspired by the virtues of great mer.

Loves: Dialectic, philosophy, reading, writing, critical investigation and preventing wrongdoing.

Hates: Crime, hypocrisy, fanaticism, being in exile, rashness and wilful ignorance.

Skills: Haelas is deft and skillful with his mace, not displaying brute strength but a keen application of pivots, using movement to generate momentum and power. As such, he can be vulnerable in cramped close quarter fighting. He is better trained in the manipulation of light magic, striking down his foes with spears of light and javelins of radiance, also calling on such powers to heal wounds and cure diseases for the poor and sick.

Background: Haelas Omeryn was born into a small village on the island of Sadith Mora, whose inhabitants farmed and fished to survive. His parents were poor folk, hardworking, but their family had a long distant ancestor who brought them pride and a little distinction, Llerenu Omeryn was a Dunmeri general of some note.

Haelas was always a dutiful lad, who learned to read and write from the village priest, Moreyn. It quickly became apparent that the boy was clever and devout, and soon he learned all he could in Tribunal teachings and lore from the priest. He turned his attention to magic as he turned 20, and considered apprenticing with a Telvanni mage. Moreyn, unwilling to let such a promising potential recruit go into the ‘unholy’ House Telvanni, persuaded him to leave home and join the Tribunal priesthood instead. Haelas jumped at the chance, he was unquestioningly devout at this time. He left Sadith Mora with a letter from Moreyn and travelled to the Tribunal Temple in Deshaan. Although he had left his family, Haelas truly believed in the sanctity of his calling. Instead of joining the priesthood, Haelas joined the Ordinators. Zealous, hardworking and clever, he did well in training and learned how to fight with mace and spear. He was chosen to study Destruction, to strike down the enemies of the temple with bursts of fire. Training was thorough and tough, but where he most excelled was investigation. With an eye for detail and a supple mind, he marked himself out as a future member of the Order of Inquisition.

After ten years at training, he finally became an Ordinator and proudly served the Tribunal Temple and the people of Morrowind. But training was intense and all consuming; it was easy to fall into patterns when all around you do the same thing. But in his many years of service, Haelas began to feel a certain unease about some of the Temple doctrine. He was a curious and questioning personality, and his inquisitorial training had heightened that. He found that his own dogma did not fully stand up under its own weight. There were inconsistencies. He reacted in the appropriate way, often cloistering himself away to copy reams of sacred temple texts, determined to purge his blasphemous doubts. But the more he read, the more he doubted. He was especially concerned that two members of the Tribunal were attributed to different accounts of the defeat of the Akaviri invasion. Only one could be true.

This was a long process, but it was dramatically hastened in 2E 576. Haelas investigated the possibility of a heretic priest, reportedly preaching lies and blasphemies in Stonehills. He and his companions came upon annotated texts, commenting on the Apographa, or hidden face of the Tribunal Temple. Though they were ordered to burn such heretical writings, Haelas saved one work and studied it in secret. It was a clinical dissection of the unease he had felt, the questions he had. His faith, his whole life came crashing down around him. He set out alone to find the Dissident, and managed to capture him. They conversed well into the night, and Haelas found the dialectic both painful and wonderful. He freed the dissident. But his absence was noted, his tent searched, the book discovered. On his return to his companions camp the next morning, at which time Haelas intended to leave the Ordinators and commit himself to the study of evidence surrounding the Tribunal, he was bound in chains. His tattoo of the Tribunal hand was cut through by his superior, branding him a heretic, a scar he bears to this day. Resourceful and well trained, Haelas escaped captivity and fled over the border to Cyrodiil, arriving in 2E 577.

He longed to return to Morrowind, but he knew he could no nothing for the moment, and held out hope the Ebonheart Pact might be a force for change. He remained in contact with several dissidents, and although he spent most of his time in scholarly contemplation, ventured back into Morrowind on several occasions to recover rare manuscripts and gather oral sources from the Ashlanders. He also worked as an investigator and assisted local guard in keeping the peace, working to help ordinary people. However, in 578, the Arcane Explosion shattered his rather serene existence. Daedra, undead, necromancy, these were evils he had been trained to fight. He grimly but reluctantly commissioned a suit of Bonemold armour, an ebony mace, and a helm carved into the likeness of Veloth. He moved into Skyrim and swore to fight for the Pact, and also began to collect his Magnum Opus, a work he tentatively titled 'Seven Books against the Temple'.

The part where he became disillusioned with the temple.

Great character! Another fellow Dunmer.

My character (Alvos Drin) is actually following the teachings of the Temple devoutly, and distruts the Nords and Argonians, it seems that our characters have some conflicting views on religion.

I like how your character seems to be a mix of a Boyant Armiger, an Ordinator, and a Vigliante of Stendarr, Haelas seems to be some sort of a Paladin, A tmeplar class would fit him well, I believe.

Also I like how his birthday is on "tales and tallows" holiday, which is a celebration of the Magical Arts and of the Mages guid.

Thanks, templar is certainly the class I intend to play with Haelas. As to his birthday...I absolutely knew about Tales and Tallows festival, it was in no way a fluke...

Another awesome character Thorfinn! He has a clear and identifiable persona, yet also has subtle details that make him seem like an actual person you'd meet in the world of Tamriel. The clash between ideologies among the Dunmer people is one of the more grounded and interesting concepts with their society, much like their politics.

I like his public branding as a heretic with the scar across a tattoo, as it would identify him as such and would lead to interesting conversations regarding it. It's something he has to live with due to his chosen path in life, and he must carry it always. But while others may see it as a mark of shame, he may wear it a bit more proudly!

Sunrio - Aldmeri Justiciar

Taren Jucanis - Imperial Deserter (Used for The Black Shroud RP)

Great character! I really like the story of how he starts to realize the temple isn't exactly what he thought it was. He seemed very similar to my character except for the fact that Haelas ends up leaving the ordinators.

Thanks Horizon, I only hope I can actually recreate the branded tattoo in-game. Still, I think he does consider it a little shameful, perhaps that was somewhat behind his decision to create a full facemask helm.

Thanks for the feedback, I have to say the new interactive map gave me quite a bit of inspiration Haelas, especially the diary entry about copying lines from sacred texts.
