"I am more than guilty of acting with whimsy and vengefulness may have filled my heart as it has any man and woman. My judgements have and never will be wisdom, and bad temper has marked some of them. I willfully meddle, this is true, and ye may even claim I have lost my wits, and this has often been true as well - but before I try to shape the Tamriel around me I also try to do something most have not yet learnt to do:
I try to look at the happenings and situations from all sides, to understand various disagreements and rivalries through the eyes and minds of all involved... more than that, to look ahead to the probable consequences of what I might do.

Sometimes I may appear heartless to ye, young Know-All-Answers with thy heart ruling ye - but I -think- about what I do, before, during, and after, and turn right around to try to right my mistakes instead of striding on and dismissing yesterday's misdeeds as gone and past, beyond recalling. If ye don't grow enough to do that, -ye- are no better than the grasp-all Molag Bal and his fellow daedra!"

Name: Harlwystyr Ealthar / The Old Meddler

Race: Breton

Age: 969 (Born 26th of First Seed, 1E 2533)

Birthsign: The Mage

Origin: Hailing from a region historically and traditionally belonging to the Kingdom of Daggerfall.

Occupation: Archmage / Sage / Meddler

Relatives: It is known that he has at least one daughter, but the rest of his family is long grinded to dust by the winds of time.

Appearance

An elderly breton with white hair; reaching at shoulder-length and at times worn in a ponytail by a contingency clip which rests at the back of his neck. A trimmed full beard vies with its wearer's ragged clothes in looking old and worse for wear.

He carries himself with the dignity that is allowed a man of his age and profession - yet with a distinct touch of humility. He can often be found wearing nondescript robes some times donned with various food- and wine-stains, but mostly just tattered and worn, and accompanied by a heavy pipesmoke. He has dancing, gray-green eyes, with a penetrating gaze to discern many things, or show great compassion. He often carries a long wooden staff - roughly seven feet from one end to the other - that ends with a fist-sized sapphire cupped in a brass-holding that spots inscribed runes.

Standing tall at 6.3 feet and best described as gaunt and thoughtful, he is quick to offer a warm smile to most people. He always seems ready for a good talk or a lengthy story; owing this to his bearing as a cautious old man.

In his possession are several worn pouches attached in a cord to his leather belt, and he can always be found enjoying the company of his old, floppy travelling boots. He is also in possession of a silver-and-obsidian amulet, as well as several winking rings. Harlwystyr also smokes a meerschaum pipe (the leaves within are indeed of strange origin; producing thick green or blue sparks, and smoke rings.)

Personality

Harlwystyr thoroughly enjoys imparting wisdom to others, but has a particular dislike for giving up the time necessary to train other mages, and rarely undertakes such tutelage for those with whom he is not friendly or to whom he's not beholden. He has also little patience for tyrants; in particular wizards lording through forceful manipulations of magic.

These days Harlwystyr rarely travels in Tamriel (although it is apparent that he once traveled the lands extensively), preferring to explore other planes of existence. When he does travel, it is usually in the disguise afforded by altered appearance through magic, or under cover of invisibility. Harlwystyr travels to acquire information; his great love is the discovery of the long forgotten, or of creatures and magic entirely new to him, such as local tribal rituals.

He can be witty and clever in conversation if he so desires, or haughty, or charming or terrible and commanding. As he has grown older, Harlwystyr has become more whimsical, given to sudden impulses and doing things not expected of his age. He is not aggressive, but is intrepid, and will fight if crossed, threatened, or attacked.

Philosophies

Harlwystyr's aim is to help Tamriel enter a new golden age of peace. Through the many centuries that comes with a life affected by magic, he has seen his friends, kin, and lovers fall to the winds of time, and thus bears a particular distate for the dealing of death. He also shows a healthy respect for the Eight Divines, but strives in earnest to promote the influences of Magnus, Phynaster and a few others.

He intends to keep a low profile in Tamriel, attempting to avoid most politics of any sort. Officially, he strives for a sage's neutrality; in fact, he wishes to promote peace, freedom from slavery and oppression for all peoples (of all races), tolerance, and maintenance of wilderness and natural beauty. He is heavily invested with the Cobalt Cloaks and other semi-secretive orders across Tamriel, working covertly to prevent war and limit the influence of rulers and groups viewed as evil. Drawing upon centuries of experience, Harlwystyr is no stranger to direct confrontations, but nevertheless prefers to work behind the scenes to prevent widespread disaster from taking place.

Background

To most, Harlwystyr's precise age is somewhat of a mystery (he will coyly evade any questions on this topic), but he is at least nine hundred winters of age, and presumably the weaver of much longevity magic, and perhaps a dabbler in advanced alchemy craft. This count of centuries is inescapable, given that he once had the Altmer, Darensil the Hoary as a tutor, and recalls to mind much detail of long lost locations across Tamriel.

The Old Meddler, a name he is somewhat known by these days, has taught such workers of magic as Adele of Camlorn, the witch Ylvina (now deceased), and the sorceress Durana Emhardt, who stayed with him for decades as apprentice and lover before starting her own adventuring career across Tamriel. and perhaps knew more of Harlwystyr's past than any other living creature save himself.

A few archaic records date a certain Harlwystyr Ealthar as the son of an old noble family from Daggerfall, born in 1E 2533. He spent the early years of his life learning to read and write; in some places a privilege reserved only a few. Despite his heritage, Harlwystyr's father, Dunyval Ealthar, was seen by many as a reasonable, down-to-earth man who looked with kind eyes upon those less fortunate than himself; a trait that easily rubbed off on his son who to this day remains a promoter of fairness and equality for all who inhabit Tamriel. Gwenlynn Ethwald, the boy's mother, was in contrast a simple blacksmith's daughter. Even though Dunyval knew that his people spun tales of the woman - proclaiming witchcraft being involved when she had successfully found the bridal bed with one of the most respected men in the realm - he rigorously loved her.

At this time, the family had a long history of producing noble and loyal knights for the Kingdom of Daggerfall; a position young Harlwystyr was groomed for throughout his childhood.

On the year of his fifteenth summer, Harlwystyr was struck kinless when hired wizards in his father's employ conspired with rival noble families to seize the Ealthar holdings. The coup caught the family off-guard, resulting in only the youth's narrow escape. For five years he bid his time as a smuggler in port cities along the Iliac Bay, living by what little he could manage to sneak past dock authorities and the local guards.

As is often the fate of smugglers, Harlwystyr eked out his life for the next seven years. In a twist of irony, his last, failed attempt resulted in him escaping on a ship bound for Sentinel and meeting up with the famed nord mercenary captain, Hjorik Halstann and his group, the Iron Axes. Harlwystyr ran with the group for a while, providing his knowledge of areas and the value of goods and loot to secure the business of the mercenaries. The Iron Axes would later be decimated in a battle high up in the Wrothgarian Mountains, with a badly wounded Harlwystyr only surviving by pure chance again. Oltherim the Psijic, a traveller, happened upon the young breton bleeding on a roadside and took him in as his own. It wouldn't be long before the Psijic spotted an innate talent with the lad; a state of mind and spirit heavily attuned to the Arcane Arts, yet lacking any form of practice, and so it was that Harlwystyr found himself under the guidance and apprenticeship of Oltherim, accompanying him across Tamriel for decade upon decade. He also claims to have spent an amount of time in the Crystal Tower and Artaeum, studying the rudiments of elven magic as well as the Old Ways as a member of the Psijic Order. Next to this, it is rumoured that he has been (and still is) involved with the University of Gwylim.

On Artaeum, he is reputed of having studied under the sage Darensil the Hoary. He stayed on the isle for a lengthy, albeit unknown period of time, growing in lore and maturity, and upon deeming the time right, left the order for personal reasons in 1E 2908 to resume his journeys in Tamriel once more - to learn its lands and lore. In this time, he ranged more widely around the continent than most men manage, visiting one site of learning after another, quietly reading through the vast libraries of Nirn, and discreetly advancing his knowledge under guidance of such mages as Afa-Azatarn and Edarythan Fasonthril of Telvannis.

In 2E 388 his travels took him to Stros M'kai, where he met the breton astronomer Eldoryan Gondane, in whom he found a man with a mind not unlike his own in the affairs of world and philosophy. Whilst it is not written in any records how long the Old Meddler stayed on the island, it is said that he recognised Eldoryan's talents as a pilot, and departed with him to explore parts of the Abecean Sea. A great friendship arose between the two which can indeed be witnessed to this very day.

Harlwystyr eventually returned to the province of his birth after the count of centuries; owing his long lifespan to magical longevity as well as a keen instinct to stay alive. He quickly earned a reputation amongst the mages of High Rock as a marverick; a mage not obessed in his wielding of the Arcane Arts, but instead as a passionate man who enjoyed the "mundane" things in life. Beyond that, a reputation as a proud seeker of artefacts as well as rare spells and a subjugator of occult studies led to him becoming a combination of self-guided talent and intense devotion to his craft. Despite this, many also consider him as good and kind man, refusing to be intimidated by anyone, and with a network of acquaintances and information across Tamriel.

He would later drop out of sight for decade upon decade, having engaged in battle with the Direnni lich, Erranyador. This conflict saw them locked in a fierce spell-struggle that would end in their disappearance, and it was only after fifty years that Harlwystyr found his way out of a cave, apparently having survived and won the struggle. As he returned to public view, he settled in Wayrest and began a career of operating as a sage for hire, and trained mages in the Arcane Arts. Several of these include mages who have later grown reputations of their own, such as Irine, founder of the adventuring company "the Warders"; Marlyna, who later overthrew a tyrannical duke in Northpoint, Selinda, later the wife of the courtier Tristan Perrick of Daggerfall, and Morgan of Evermore. Again, in 2E 554 he once more vanished from public view, only to reappear a couple of years later, when he in 2E 557 proved instrumental in the re-formation of the Cobalt Cloaks; a former project of his in which much thought and preparation was given.

In 2E 562, Selinda's husband became the victim of court intrigue and lost his life, and Harlwystyr answered her call for aid by returning to Daggerfall, where he with the help of his old friend Halwend Thorne, a mercenary of the Camlorn Blades, managed in bringing about Selinda's vengeance upon the murderer; an unscrupulously baron lording over the town of Crosswych in the northern regions of Glenumbra. It is safe to say that the elderly mage fell in love with the serenity and beauty of this area, its nearness to the court of Daggerfall, and its simple folk, as he chose to stay once everything had been set right.

It is furthermore suspected that he had a finger in raising and organising a group of present courtiers within the various kingdoms of High Rock, but there is little to no hard evidence, and Harlwystyr just spreads a warm smile across his lips now and then when queried. Throughout all of this, Harlwystyr Ealthar mangaged to escape the Knahaten Flu as well as evade the Soulburst of 2E 578 that killed and drove several mages across Tamriel mad.

During his travels, it is said that more than one curious item has ended up in his possession. Some believe that several artefacts are hoarded deep within his tower, either for safekeeping or in a great collection. One such artefact is rumoured to be the ancient longsword Andamafre - known in the etymology of the Ayleidoon as "long frost", for according to tale, great enchantments were laid upon the material from which it was made during its creation. One elven poem describes it as "a great blade that gleams like ice and reflects the eternal stars that link Mundus and Aetherius." He is also known to have penned many books on various topics down his many years.

Presently Harlwystyr resides in a place he cares for, the quiet village of Crosswych where he settled. He lives a quiet existence with his friend and scribe, Theodore Lewynth, and amongst the townsfolk, who consult him regularly on matters of lore, history, and advise of upbringing their offspring. From his clustered, two-story tower, situated by a pleasant little lake, he also spends his time leading the Cobalt Cloaks; an order he re-formed in 2E 557 to counter the various threats posed to Tamriel. Although the old wizard has confounded the efforts of necromancers, cultists, and hundreds of rival sorcerers for countless years, he also heeds the call of Nirn when it stings his heart, forcing him to wander the world he has come to know and love.

I rather like this :) It is well fleshed out and interesting. However there are a few things that are dancing at teh edge of breaking lore here. And about his age... what kind of magic did he use? Did he use restoration? Since Restoration is the school who manipulates the forces of Life, shouldnt it also be able to manipulate Life itself? I realised that and used it for my char anyway... Did Harlwystyr also use the same way?

I also wonder, did the Psijic take him to Artaeum and he lived there for a while, did he become a member of the Psijic order? Actually you should not be a member of the Psijics at all. Its a no-no to be as they are practically powerful as gods.

I'm not going to touch on the age-thing again, we've spoken about that. Other than that I can really appreciate where you are taking this character and you have given it a lot of thought. Props for all the well-thought of details and your writing style, too :)

A wizened old wizard with a bit of a lively streak! It's clear you have spent much time creating this well detailed character, and have carried the effort on to the Cobalt Cloaks as well! Nice to see so much spirit and consideration put into these things.

Also that's certainly a quality commissioned art! There's quite some talented artists about.

Endaros Ilmori - Buoyant Armiger
Sunrio - Aldmeri Justiciar

Taren Jucanis - Imperial Deserter (Used for The Black Shroud RP)

An interesting character, Harlwystyr. There's certainly something of the 'venerable old wizard' trope about him, but you keep him down to earth and low key in many ways. I wonder, throughout your bio you filter his activities with 'reputed to have' or similar - are some of them nothing more than rumors? He seems the kind of man who would attract a good few.
