Kazya - Djingis
((the story of how she got her wolf companion, takes place around 4-5 years before game launch))

Kaz watched the horses trot past her where she stood, heading towards the inn, her eyes lingering on the riders with disdain. She knew the kind of people they were, had heard them brag about their skill as hunters more than once. Her eyes narrowed before she let out a soft sigh, no they couldn't be called hunters in her opinion. They did not hunt because of need, nor did they hunt to keep the balance. Instead they hunted for trophies they could brag about, her teeth clenched as she also knew that they did not care about putting down their prey painlessly, nor did they care if their prey were young, or even worse a healthy mother with young ones.

Her steps led her to the merchant she was here to see, bargaining for the goods while her mind lingered on those two so called hunters. Coins switched hands and Kaz smiled at the merchant who gave a toothless grin back, she left the small shady alley and walked out of the gate. She could feel the gaze of the guard at the gate following her and she chuckled lightly, knowing the guards in that town were suspicious little buggers and therefore they would find it suspect that she left the town before nightfall. Though she preferred to find a camp in the wild, than to sleep in a bed with roaches, the inn in this town were not known for its cleaned beds after all.

Kaz raised the waterflask to her lips as she walked, suddenly she stopped and looked at what lay on the trail. A curse left her lips as her eyes darkened in fury, the body of what ones had been a female wolf had been thrown carelessly on the trail. The body missed two paws and the tail, Kaz took a deep breath and slowly walked over to the carcass. Her eyes caught the look of the wolf's stomach and she cursed loudly before looking around, trying to find the tracks. She didn't had to look far as the den had been very close. Two dead wolfcubs laid in front of the entrance of the den, their bodies mutilated just like their mother. She carefully picked up the two cubs and laid them next to their mother, after having gathered some dry wood she lit the improvised pyre. She was watching the fire so it didn't get out of control when she caught a movement in the corner of her eye, glancing to the side her eyes widened briefly as a third wolfcub slowly peeked out of the den. The cub whined softly and she could tell it was scared, she waited patiently as the cub moved further out of the den. When it was close enough she carefully sat down on the ground, the cub withdraw several steps from her and growled as if trying to scare her away. She calmly sat silently, opening a pouch with some fresh meat in it. She cut off a small piece of meat and threw it towards the cub.

Kaz waited as she gazed at the cub, it was a male and he seemed to be unharmed, albeit scared and hungry if the way he gulped down the meat was an indication. She cut off another small piece and threw that towards him, slightly closer than the first time. This continued for quite some time until the cub were next to her, still wary but not as scared as he had been. She had started to hum on a old lullaby a while ago, which seemed to make the cub calmer strangely enough. A glance towards the pyre showed it had burnt down, so she calmly picked up the cub and stood up, the cub promptly decided to sunk his teeth into her wrist. "Easy little one..." she murmured, thankful for the armguards which protected her from the worst of the bite. She walked just a few steps before putting down her pack at the slightly cavelike stoneformation that had been the den, she held the cub firmly yet gently as she eased herself down on the ground again. Offering him some water and one last piece of meat, she leaned against the stone and pulled the cloak around herself, she was unsure of what to do right now. Softly she started to hum on the lullaby again, feeling the cub move next to her, his teeth nipping at her gloved hands and she smiled in amusement before drifting off to sleep.

The moon was the only witness when the wolf cub moved closer to her so he was covered by the cloak. He bedded with her cloak for a little while before falling asleep, pressed closely to her side.

Sunrise was greeted with the sight of the little cub pressed neatly to Kaz, her hand having moved to rest beside him, in a almost protective way. As she awoke she found the cub asleep and a warm, gentle smile curved her lips. She decided right there that she would take care of the cub, when he was old enough she would let him decide if he wanted to stay with her or leave.

((the story of how she got her ferret companion, takes place around 2-2½ years before launch ))

The night was quiet, still and quite dark, the hay she laid in warm and comfortable. Yet something had awoken her and Djingis, Kaz could feel the tension within Djingis as he laid still, prepared to strike without hesitation. She listened carefully but could not hear anything at first, a low rustle in the hay not far from where she laid gave her the direction and she carefully turned her head, her eyes opened slightly but she couldn't see anything. She was just about to sit up when a small head suddenly showed in the hay, her eyebrow rose as she watched the form of a young ferret trying to get into her pack. She narrowed her eyes as she realised that the ferret tried to get access to the food she had there, her eyes flickered over the young ferret. From the shape of the head she guessed it was a male, his fur sable colored, though she could tell he still had his youngster fur. He had yet to gain the fur of a adult ferret, this in turn led her to wonder how young the ferret actually was. Especially as she could see that one of his ears were damaged and from the look of it needed to be taken care off, she slowly sat up.

Despite her slow movement the ferret kit hid in the hay again, she reached over to her pack and pulled out a piece of meat. Glancing at the meat she smiled lightly as she briefly remembered the time she met Djingis, she reached for a knife and cut a small piece of the meat. She threw towards the small hole in the hay and than she waited, after a while a nose showed and a moment later the meat was snatched. She repeated this a couple of times before letting next piece of meat land closer to her, making the little ferret come closer if he wanted the food.

The closer the little kit came, the clearer it was to Kaz that he was in a bad shape. A piece of his ear were missing and the wound had started to be inflamed, he also seemed far to thin as if he hadn't gotten enough to eat lately. His fur were matted and she could see blood on it as well, the kit were now right next to her and she let him have another piece of meat. As he ate that she carefully reached for her leather gloves, knowing well that despite his small frame the teeth would be sharp. Djingis had yet to make any movement towards the ferret, instead opting to keeping a close eye on the small one.

An hour later Kaz gently put the kit in a pouch that she had prepared with some soft bedding, the little one was exhausted after having fighted her as she cleaned the wound. It had been rough as the kit had done whatever he could to get away, even when he stopped squirming to get out of her hold he had kept up hissing and biting at her. Now though, after having tired himself and also having a full belly, he just curled together and fell asleep. Kaz watched as he slept peacefully, she glanced out through a small window on the barn and grimaced lightly. The sun was just starting to rise so she would not be able to go back to sleep, she yawned and started to prepare breakfast for herself and Djingis, all the while keeping an eye on the sleeping ferret.

I like how this story reveals what sort of values Kazya has, not by simply describing her, but by showing her actions and thoughts when it came to the boasting hunters and the destitute animals.

It's clear that quite a bit of detail and care went into the stories! Aiding the creatures had very thoughtful vibe to it. And now she has two different animal companions. Thumbs_up
