Loading Screens

Something that has ALWAYS bugged me with any MMORPG or just any RPG in general is loading screens. They break game immersion by putting up a screen that makes little to no sense why it is there game-wise. Sure, the next area has to load or whatever which is why the loading screen is there. . but there are ways to make it to where you load an area without having to have the area behind you be loaded.

As far as gameplay, why do I have to wait even 5 seconds to walk through a door and have blackness as a gateway through? I remember Farcry 2 ( maybe F3 has this too, but I haven't played it yet ) where if you walk through a door your guy literally walks through it and there isn't any loading screen. Why can't there be stuff like that?

Idk, what I've noticed with WoW is that there's nothing that takes you out of the game at all. Even traveling from place to place there is no loading screen. (back in vanilla WoW.. haven't played it in years) The only time you'd have a loading screen is going from continent to continent. Dungeons also had loading screens. However, compared to most things, that's pretty major improvement imo. Not to mention, things like Skyrim, or just new games in general can't adopt this simple way to let people maintain their immersion in the game they're playing. Even if they're just 3 seconds long, it still makes no sense game-wise that I see blackness entering doors, ergo, I lose my immersion.

Also not to mention those with lower-end computers which people can't shovel out the door if your talking about an MMO where you want a LOT of people. Those people might have loading screens 5-10 seconds long where you it's only 2-3. I recall a large reason people complained about Age of Conan is that the loading screens in the game were god-awful. So, I tried it, and it really is God-awful. Not to mention it really just makes me want to stop playing unless I'm with friends laughing it up in a call or something.

Never-the-less, Loading screens to me are the devil in any MMO or RPG. Games such as WoW and even SWTOR did it to some degree where you don't need a loading screen for everything.

So. . yeah. Loading screens suck and I seriously hope they do the best possible way to limit them to a major degree in TESO, else I don't see it going far. Unsure

If they get everything right expect for the loading screens, they are doing great. Loading screens have never really bugged me, but it is pretty cool when you don't have them.

I generally dislike loading screens if they are taking the mick to load. It makes it more bearable if they displayed something interesting to read. Apart from that they are like miniature breaks.

Loading screens are a pain but I guess I can live with them as long as they don't take ages to load the next area , I'm hoping that the only loading screen in ESO will be when you go into or out of Cyrodiil .

I wonder if there will be loading screens when you enter buildings ,dungeons, ruins etc like they have in the single player Elder Scrolls games. If there are loading screens I hope they have interesting or useful information on them.

i actually love loading screens as a fantastic place for concept art, etc.

the exception is instanced zones. i HATE instanced zones... so, yeah, i hate a loading screen there =)

Personally, I have always wondered about loading screens and Devs lack of imagination as to there use.
Obviously I would rather see something other than 30 seconds of black screen.
The idea that they are a good place for concept art is an agreeable one, however, as a gamer who tends to become obsessed with the games I play, the continuous piece of concept art does become a bit boring.
They are of course, much better than the good old spinning wheel with a bar increasing telling you that the new scene is "loading" however.

Going back to the "30 seconds" of loading time I previously mentioned....mmm, that's about the same as a ad on TV !!!
Maybe, a more productive way of using that time would be to have "fast food" advertisements !!!
I know after a few hours of dungeon crawling, I get hungry....
Reminding me of the latest deal from the local fast food restaurant that delivers to my door would be great, I can keep playing AND not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from !! They could even put up discount coupons and my meal might come with a small action figure from the game ? Now that would be a bonus ..
Win/Win I say :D...

Lol, I am of course joking.
Keep the Artwork...

But you have to admit, it would be funny seeing a certain "clown" running around in armour selling the new "double monster rat on a stick" meal dressed in heavy armour...
hehehe

Since there is going to be a lore library, I would like to see passages from books you have picked up in the game on the loading screen. That way the loading screen would be like my character saying "I pulled out this book to read during my travels. I got so heavily into it that I forgot to look up and would you have guessed that I ended up in (insert Place)". As if to say that is the reason why I didn't get to see the transition.

Plus it would give me something interesting to read while I am waiting.

I just don't care about 'em. Ignore 'em, it's the best way, really.

They said that they DO have loading screens, similar to Skyrim I think, but the loading time you wait is MUCH MUCH faster.
Hopefully it won't break TOO much immersion for you... but I think there will still be some places (shops, and stuff) that you just open doors, but don't quote me on that, it's just speculation.

I really like this idea. It doesn't break immersion so much, and it gives you something to do during that time.

Yeah, if they take like a half a minute like in skyrim then that's annoying but otherwise you were saying how you don't like the way they make sure you can't get totally immersed. That's probably good, without the loading screens you could completely lose yourself for hours on end and that is not good. Though annoying loading screens are probably for the best, plus, you can get some good tips...I just wish they didn't repeat.

I remember someone telling me about loading screens in Skyrim. I didn't realized they existed until my game was heavily modded. But it still only took about a quarter of a second to load.

I recorded a video clip going through different loading screen for demonstration. Note that the game was heavily modded at the time:

What is responsible for the fast load times? SSD (Solid State Drives). They are cheap now, if you don't like load times then I will recommend for you to get one.

If I were to use a regular hard drive to record that video it could take up to 4-5 minutes (total) load times as opposed to 9-13 seconds (total).
