So, I know this has been covered before but I'm just really curious as to what you guys think of the whole mega-server vs. shards deal. I personally think that it would be more beneficial to have shards rather than one huge stinkin' server, but what do I know!? Happy

just wanted to get your takes on this! Thumbs_up so yeah fire away!

I'd rather have shards instead of a mega server for the time being. However if the mega server can work without bugs then I 100% am for the mega server.

I'll always vote for a megaserver since there is nothing that's done with regional servers ("shards") you cannot also do for a megaserver while regional servers or "shards" are just lazy investments.

Megaserver.

Even if it doesn't end up the greatest method I am all for innovation and attempting to break the usual norms.

Why? because change is good an it inspires attempts to improve with new technology instead of staying standstill with the old ways.

Mega Server because I like new technology even I dont' know it work so good yet, but there is hope.
And the link from TESO themself have link to eso-hut made it sound very promising

Quote:Unconfirmed sources state it will also give players the option of choosing what, where and how they should share the virtual world by their own preferences, choices and actions they make in game.

If your one for hating on those L33t kid players who spam “Dirge” and “Leeroy Jenkins!!!” in the chat all day then you may be in luck – the Mega Server may just give you a way out and place you in a channel with people closer to your own age group.

I would rather see shards. It would provide for a much cleaner experience where you wouldn't have to worry about ping/latency from someone halfway across the world with a bad internet connection. I would only want a megaserver if they promised a division line, where they would designate a "cut-off bandwidth" say functional bandwidth of 10mbs, and anybody under the cutoff can go play amongst themselves. Really, this is more of a console issue from what I can gather. But its super frustrating when you can only see one out of every 4 steps that someone takes. This is an issue that is rampant across the consoles with all games, and millions of people exploit it. Its one of the biggest reasons that americans and europeans play on each others servers on console games, they are simply exploiting a known competitive advantage. So i guess my answer comes with a ridiculious stipulation? The idea of a mega server has the potential to ruin this game for a lot of console players. Just my opinion though

It is not that I lack loyalty, in fact it is one of my stronger traits. It just seems that I have a much deeper, more poignant sense of betrayal.

Yes, this has been covered before, but that been so Long, so never mind.

There will be Multiservers. Atleast two, one NA, one EU. But you won´t Play with all the People. As far as I remember they will allocate certain properties to the Players, either by analyzing their playstyle or by simply asking them whether they prefer PvP, PvE, social, competitive etc. etc. And by that they will have several phases where you Play with People who share your interests.

Who keeps the Allesian Heresy down?
We do, we do

Who knocked Yokuda off the maps?
Who keeps the Dwemer under wraps?
We do, we do

It wont ruin consoles, they will have their own megaserver, since the clear advantage of PC vs Console.
if latency was an issue then they wouldn't be jamming 2000 people into cyrodiil.

You probly know much more about it than I do, but it has been a clear issue with all console games since I can remember that is much talked about all over the internet. I guess my point is that I cant see any real advantages to megaservers, only drawbacks. I would much like to hear your thoughts, this could end up being very educational for me as I have never attempted an mmo, which is clearly going to be an entirely different experience from playing skyrim, battlefield, or dark souls on a last gen console

I do prefer a megaserver, I like the new change and technology. If it works out, and let's state it that way, I think it will be a huge step forward in the gaming'world'.

However there is one thing I'm not sure of, and that is, there will be 2 megaservers. One NA and one EU, so we still are able to play with each other, but I have friends in America and in Europe I will be playing with a lot. Is it possible to group up (+20people) often, without anyone having lag or any disadvantages?

It would be a huge dissapointment for me and many others if this is going to be an issue, then I'd rather prefer shards.

What is MegaServer?

Megaserver is a new scaling server technology that allows to house all players on one server but in different worlds. The main feature of the technology is flexibility. It allows to maintain the same amount of players in a particular “world”.

It is not one server. No, it is group of servers with modern hardware that work together. ZeniMax does not tell details about how Mega Server works. It is their secret and we will be able to see everything with our own eyes. Developers say that MegaServer uses all modern server technologies and innovations.

How it works?

When you want to enter the game no server list appears. You just click “Play” and you are in Tamriel. All players are housed on one “mega server” but in several separated worlds. These worlds are not stable. The system can add new players to the existing worlds or can merge several worlds with few players. It is a great technology that sets new MMO standard.

Here is the example of how the system works. Imagine that an area can house 500 people before being overcrowded (it is just an example to understand mechanism, so the numbers are not real). And at the peak times there can be 10, 20, 30 or more such separated areas with 500 players in each. At quieter times, the 'mega server' can merge such areas together to maintain the world active. That means your area will never look empty. You will be able to find players any time in the morning or evening. It will be interesting to play in any time of the day.

MegaServer solves problems of empty cities, empty dungeons, overcrowded areas, overcrowded servers and many more. Elder Scrolls Online will give you next generation MMO experience.

I voted Megaserver. Shards would end up been merged anyway.

I like servers or shards, but we will have to see how the mega server works out.
