Mini Map?

The one thing I'm realizing that I really miss, more than anything, is a mini-map.

I have (in real life) a horrible, horrible sense of direction. I can barely tell left from right on a bad day, and don't even ask me which way is north. And that translates directly into game. In previous MMOs I'd fly to the wrong city or run in the wrong direction for 5 minutes before realizing I was going the wrong way. And that was WITH a mini map.

I don't think I've gone in the right direction once since playing. I really wish there could be a mini-map. Or else I'll just have to set a destination anytime I want to go anywhere ever. D:

Do you think this is something they could implement in the future, or would it be too far removed from an "elder scrolls" type game for them to do so?

I personally don't really miss a minimap. I kinda prefer a large map and compass myself. In a weird way, I think it makes navigating across distances a lot easier. I do have times where i've thought a minimap would be nice though. There might be add-ons made to fill this function, but I personally don't think it will be put in game anytime soon.

Thanks! I haven't really looked into Add-ons, but maybe I should. I didn't use any for the first 3 years I played WoW, I kind of like to play a game the way it was made. But at this rate it'll be 2 years before I hit cap cause I'm always going the wrong way, haha. :>

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I like being rewarded for practicing the use of my spacial memory.

On the plus side, studies have shown that more you use your memory, the better it becomes, outside of the obvious mental degradation caused by certain conditions.

On the flip-side, the less you use it, the more the neural circuits degrade.

I'm all for QOL improvments - the problem is, where does it end? The developers have stated they don't want mods to be considered 'essential' to play the game with, and certainly not ones that grant an advantage. I would find a mini-map grants me an advantage. Likewise, the next person might claim that they need to see a target's resources, because they're not good at tracking the number of spells/abiilties used during battle. Or buff tracking, because someone claims that they're not good at internally tracking time.

These are all facets of play that, with practice, can be improved, if we choose to invest the time and carefully consider the most effective methods that will aid our personal development.

I hope you choose to invest the time and find the returns worth the investment.

SIDENOTE: This is also a good argument for turning of the old SATNAV and using a map and the noggin, every once in a while.

Other Elder Scrolls games had mini-maps, but you didn't see them in the main screen. They were local maps that could be enabled from the global map, to show the local area the character was in. In the game screen, one had to get used to using the compass indicator.

You are not the only person who has asked for more detailed information about local areas. Evidently, there are some quests that are area-specific, but there is no exact indication what the borders of the areas are. So, it may not be too much to ask to get a bit more information in the UI at some future time.

Also, feel free to look into the various UI mods to see if any of them have mini-maps. With respect to mods, if something is available in the API, it is legitimate to display it in a mod. Some folks may feel that it is somehow cheating to use UI enhancements that are enhancements from the base UI. On the contrary, the game was designed for this to happen. For one thing, the UI is lowest-common-denominator detail-wise because it has to work on game consoles and low-resolution television sets, where too much detail obscures the action. For another thing, ZOS is quite cognizant of the abilities of modders, and chooses to let them develop enhancements at no cost to ZOS so that their investment money can go into other projects.

There are a few minimaps you can install as an addon like some have mentioned. The one's that I have tried though have been broken for launch. I'd give it a few days till they get updated.

I don't mind the lack of mini maps. Skyrim and Oblivion didn't have them, and the in game map is quick and easy to use. Also I had no idea add-ons were already out

Yeah I didn't really look into add-ons because I thought it would be way too early. But I guess people are pretty quick with that kind of thing! Pretty impressive!

ESOhead minimap addon is working with v1.0 live as I am currently using it without any bugs. This addon can be installed using the minionUI manager.

When you are in an quest area the compass turns light blue. When you leave the designated area you loose the blue tint. It actually makes it really simple for me to notice when I'm in the proper area searching for something without te use of a map.
