So hi!
I'm going to go straight to the point. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to online games. I've played a few but always went solo and stuck to quests and missions, so I don't really know how to behave in the more social aspect of these kinds of games, like with guilds and team play. I really don't want to piss anybody off when TESO comes out so could you veterans give a newbie like me some tips and advice?

I'd appreciate it a lot! Smiling

Don't feed trolls - ever.
Try and join a guild and chat with your guildies, get to know them.
Chatting with randoms in area chat is fine, ignore people that get angry and tell you to stop.
It's ok to help random people you see while you're out questing, you just might be saving them from a repair bill and you might even be able to team up with them for some quests/group mobs.
if you're looking for a group for something specific and you don't have a group/guild that can help, a quick LFG for x in area chat should get you a group fairly quickly - just remember that you wont be the only person looking for people to group up with and that people are either friendly in group chat, or say very little.

Oh and if someone says they're putting you on ignore for chatting in a global channel they're an idiot.

That is great advice. The only thing i would suggest is, don't chat needlessly in game specific chats. For example, don't discuss the DPS of different weapon classes in the LFG (Looking for group channel). Some people don't enjoy others chat and will only keep important channels open. If these are clogged with chatter then many will find that annoying.

But in the OOC (out of character) channel, that is a great place to discuss nearly whatever.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. One huge no-no is having random conversations in the "world chat" channel. Usually it's the people who are masters at the game who do this. You know, the ones who have been playing for a few years and have nothing else better to do than talk in global and do random duels. This may seem like the accepted normal goings-on in the MMO, but don't be fooled: if you decide to start chatting in world chat, everyone other than the few people who do it with you will hate you. It's the #1 reason why people always mute that channel when they log in. Yes, people ALWAYS chat in global chat in just about every single MMO out there, but that doesn't mean it isn't annoying as all hell for everyone else playing the game.

Global chat should be confined to looking for groups for epic dungeons, selling an incredibly rare item/asking for the value of an item (if no global trade channel), or calling out a scammer/hacker. You know, something actually important for everyone to see.

But it's so much fun to make friends in global chat.
Random chatting is also (from my experience) one of the best places to get help about playing the game, I can't even count the amount of times a new player has joined into one of my global chat convos to ask about something me or one of the other people said and have then gotten a tonne of advice to help them along.

Idk about Global chat but i always chat with people in the area or city I am in games. It's fun, thats the whole social aspect of a game and to be honest keeping to yourself and your own irl friends is kinda boring :\
I do find from other games the occasional annoying troll on world/global chat but there's always those types of people nothing you can do about that.

You ignore trolls, literally, makes the chat log a much more pleasant thing to look at.

Yes, asking for help or info is definitely what I consider to be a good thing to talk about in global chat. After all, your chances of being answered are far greater when theoretically asking everyone at the same time.

I mean just the general gossip-mongering and "oh, how have you been lately" chit-chat. That stuff can be left out of global. If you want to talk to random people, talk to people you find while being out and about. If you want to talk to a group of your favorite people without really doing anything, just all join a party together. Also, many MMOs allow for a completely separate group chat function from the normal chats. There's no reason to clog up global chat with chit-chat that thousands upon thousands of people don't care about. Then those people mute global chat where others are asking for help or for dungeon groups or price checks, etc.

In my opinion, it just makes for a better community when an elite group of players don't dominate global chat every single day with annoying gossip.

I like custom channels for chit-chat and gossiping, that way I can talk behind peoples backs without them knowing!

Exactly. No need to be on global chat to randomly talk with people.

I may be biased because in the main MMO I've played, you need to spend money on a special item to talk in global chat. These items can get pretty pricey, especially when you consider one was used up after each message. It annoyed me to see those elitist players just talking on global chat all day. They didn't do anything and wasted all that money just to talk in a place where everyone can see them to stroke their own egos and say to everyone "Hey, look at me talk".

No offense, but that's what I see when I think about someone who does gossip chit-chat in global.

Don't get me wrong, you could still do the random talk to strangers thing, but to talk in global chat where the whole server can hear you no matter where you were, it used a consumable item. That you could only get from a specific kind of vendor. That used a very specific currency to trade with them. That you would really only ever find in cash shop packs (however, you could buy them from player shops for when you need to recruit people for an epic dungeon).

The game was called Perfect World International.
