Name Plates

I dread the idea of a sea of name plates, (which I'd expect to be able to toggle off), but what I really dislike about name plates the most is the idea of standing out to other players.

Is there info about this released? I hear on the grape vine that stealth is in? Does that mean creeping in the shadows? Begs an ask re: name plates, cos what's the point or sneaking or following, if you've got a big "I'm over here" on top of your head?

I really just dread the idea of name plates. Okay in social settings, like a tavern maybe, or maybe okay if players are quite close to each other, (and maybe quite handy in melee with each other (and what of sniping or ranged battle?)).

Name plates are handy for spotting friends easily, but in the towns' streets and on the lands and seas - I just don't wanna see it, nor be seen like that so easily. This typical MMO feature would be a total spoiler for me. I'd like this game to avoid this annoying MMO habit, and stick to something without name plates, the absence of which made Elder Scrolls Elder Scrolls. Selecting a player and having a dial come up would suit me, if ppl "had" to see names... but otherwise, leave it out...

Is there specific news about name plates? And how do ppl feel about name plates - MMO essential, or ES no-no?

I'm frimly - staunchly - in the "no-no" camp. But it may already be decided...

a big NO for me.why should you know someones name unless they tell you.gameplay wise think they ruin the visuals of any game seeing floating tags everywhere.

I tend to turn of nameplates, with one exception... the few times I do pvp I tend to have enemy nameplates active ... gives me a small chance to survie a few seconds longer *laughs*

But all in all, I personally would prefer no nameplates

Huh, I like to identify whoever ganks me, so I can bring back my main.

I believe it should be toggleable like many of the other things. If you don't want to see nameplates, that's fine. Turn it off. But that doesn't mean that other people who like to have name plates visible shouldn't be allowed to do so.

The game does not revolve around you.

That's a general statement for anyone who has the "it must be the way I want it to be or else" mentality.

(I think I"m channeling a bit of Sordak with this post... but he might disagree with me just to be disagreeable.)

well but i do not disagree with you.

It should be toggleable. I just dont see the need for it. Maybe in PvE i guess to differentiate mobs. We dont know how different the models will be (generaly they arent in MMOs) so a quick recognition is nice.

However in PvP they just obscure the view, noteably, if PvP is anything like DAoC, seeing nameplates of your enemies doesnt make sense at all since in DAoC the names of enemies would not be shown but rather a generic term would be given. Such as Albion Defender or something.

I would not be suprised if we would see the same in ESO.
In GW2 that they did have nameplates kinda turned me off. I must say i never went around to check if you can remove them as i did not find an option for that right away and i did get used to it rather quickly. But still i find that having it as a default option in PvP is kind of nonsensical. Especialy considering the vast player numbers we are seeing.

so yeah. the conclusion: have the option, but dont make it 1. mandatory for gameplay and 2. the default option, at least not in PvP.

Hopefully, they have it where we can toggle them on or off.. Preferably on 2 separate toggles, one for Friendlies and one for Enemies.. (because I would like to see my friends name plates... but don't want the mass sea of enemy name plates on the PvP Battle field...) and what I Really Hope is that IF the DO allow Name plates for Enemy PvP'ers, that the your Name Plate fades away when you go into Sneak mode... Other wise, what is the point of sneaking with a Big Neon Sign Flashing over your shadowy figure...?? I am Sure they have come up with solutions and taken it all into account....

I am Dyslexic! Please don't flame my posts because I can't spell or have poor grammer. Being a Spell Check Troll or a Grammer Nazi takes away from the topic, and makes you look petty. Just because I can't spell does NOT make me stupid or my point less valid.

Oh but I loved Shadowbane raiding with everyone's heraldry floating above their head. I thought it looked cool.

I've rewatched a bunch of game-play vids, and I note there're no name-plates to be seen. I'm sure they've given this thought (as Tailsmon thinks too) esp. re: sneaking, and finding out who knocked you off. Perhaps name-plates appear over a killer/victor when you're in dead mode? Popping up in the AD afterlife, before respawning... Keen to see what they do here.

My guess is most ppl would like to see name-plates, if they wanted, in arena-style matches, esp. challenges, and in open battles too; but would not the more covert elements of raiding, (if indeed any are covert (the seal-team strike/spies)), would not such activity require a much lower profile on screen other than the character's frame?

Without name-plates giving us away, is open a whole bunch of tactics V other players in Cyrodil, esp. with the use of disguises: reconnaissance, ambushes, distractions, ruses or even the odd black-flag operation. It'd be a whole world of cunning guile and deception. Be very interesting... and so much fun, or even amusing, where a team of players obviously need to go back and think about a new strategy, cos they stand out like dogs' balls, or "Yeah-yeah, we know that one, nice try..."

Cedarlilly's Shadowbane referrence is interesting too, cos some players won't have anything to hide, being the epitome of honour as some type of Paladin/Knight/Lord sort. Maybe a name-plate could be an optional broadcast, (a click or two option) - like: "mouse over/select player = name is/is not broadcast".

Decorating or altering a name-plate is appealing too, and could reinforce a character's character, or enhance any titles (and outfits) that we may be able to add to our names that we earn. But whether broadcasting a name-plate or not, players should get the blinkin' names of gankers, for sure, via a fly-in, or message of some sort - a log record... Info re: "who ganked me?" can be got without ruining an aesthetic quality ZENIMAX seem to want to guard, and which TES players regard as a definiton of the series, and thus sacred ground.

Imagine a twit who would forget to NOT broadcast their name, and as a scout approach an enemy keep? "Arrrchers! No, no,... scratch that... Caaatapults!" hehe

The idea of no nameplates for RvR sounds interesting to me. You would have to recognize the races you are going up against, which I think would be cool. Granted, some races stand out more than others. It would certainly make for a much cleaner interface. You also can't just easily get an instant count of the red tags on your screen to know how many enemies are in front of you (even if they are far away). I've gotten used to it playing Day Z (Arma II mod) recently.

Are you seriously asking Elder Scrolls fans not to complain about something? That's like asking a bear not to shit in the woods, a dog not to sniff its own butt, or a priest not to molest children. lol

Yeah, obviously I won't do that. I'll force myself to live with the annoyance.
