First off, yes I'm still alive :P

Now then, just noticed this neat tidbit, in the new Dragonborn DLC a certain noc says this line of dialogue
Quote:"You are too young to remember the Nerevarine. He defeated Dagoth Ur and saved us all from the blight."

Quote:"He"

So I guess it's confirmed cannon now that the Nerevarine is/was male.

In my headcanon, Nerevarine was female argonian cross-dresser.

No more a canonization than the "he"s in the prophecies. Pronouns are easy to hear otherwise if you prefer, after all. ;) And some people (sadly) still use "he" as a generic...

I always wondered why that is. For generic I would prefer "it", but I guess that would be offensive to inanimate objects :/

Lurks-In-Shadows - The Thief.
Jo'Rakha - The Cleric.
Xefrenos - The Werecrocodile.

normally I would agree but the npc who said this quote was alive when morrowind happened so I am pretty sure he would know the true gender and refer to the Nerevarine as such.

Sure they us He in prophecies and as a general pronoun sometimes but if he was around when the Nerevarine was around and knew the gender, say the Nerevarine was a she, I doubt he would call her a he.

Okay I'm starting to confuse myself with all the pronouns here :P

Maybe he was referring to nerevarine as he because that person was reincarnation of saint Indoril Nerevar, who was of male gender?

I feel like they could've easily changed the line to dodge pronouns and say:

"You are too young to remember this, but long ago the Nerevarine defeated Dagoth Ur and saved us all from the blight."

But for some reason they didn't. Now there's some disagreement concerning it.

Also the line kind of assumes your character is not an old mer (which it could be); and the presence person who says it kind of solidifies Morrowind canon in that the Nerevarine apparently didn't do the quests or make the decision to kill said person.

Character Profiles:
Endaros Ilmori - Buoyant Armiger
Sunrio - Aldmeri Justiciar

Taren Jucanis - Imperial Deserter (Used for The Black Shroud RP)

My Nerevarine was a female Dunmer, but it could have very well been male in canon sources.
Though, Bethesda does like to keep it open so we, as the players, can fill in the blanks ourselves.

I agree with @Tikikata. When he speak about Nerevarine, you should imagine Nerevarine as how you created him/her. You were Nerevarine and then remember all adventures when you played as him/her. That is what Bethesda wanted and it is great.

It was just a minor oversight by Bethesda. No player character is canon in terms of race or gender.

By arrow. By blade.
By tooth. By claw.
By shock. By frost. By flame.
The Aldmeri Dominion will dominate Tamriel.
Our enemies will fall until the Throne is ours.

Nerevarine sounds kind of a girlish name, a Dunmer one.

"the nerevarine"
such as "the protagonist"

in both cases youd be refering to him as "he"

English is a sexist language.
live with it.

Double post here, sorry. But I've found an interesting thing, resource I mean.

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nerevarine
There's a table in the right with the following information:

Name unknown - Nerevarine
Biographical information

Homeland
Outside of Morrowind

Date of birth
Before 427 3E

Physical description
Race
Defined by player, Dunmer in default

Gender
Defined by player, male in default

Hair color
Defined by player

Eye color
Defined by player

Chronological and political information
Era(s)
Third and Fourth

Affiliation
Blades;
Nerevaric camps;
Nerevarine Cult;
Ashlanders;
Great Houses (Hlaalu, Redoran and Telvanni);
Empire of Tamriel

The gender.
Male for default. But I believe that's just character costumization.
And wasn't Indoril Nerevar the suppose incarnation of Nerevarine?

“Interesting” is not the word I’d choose. This is all just basic data for the player character.

Did this person actually meet the Nerevarine?

Also, does this mean the Dragonborn can’t be a 250-year-old dunmer? Darn, back to the drawing board.
