Official Pettition to add Name Plates to ESO

I have created a petition asking Zenimax Online Studios to reinstate name plate functionality in Elder Scrolls Online. You can show your support and sign the petition here at change.org with this link:

http://chn.ge/1imeXpR

I realize there is a great debate going on about this topic, and that there are those who would appreciate this option, and those who oppose it. If you oppose the idea of nameplates, please read what I have to say before posting how much you hate nameplates, and that you do not want ESO to turn into WoW etc.

I am proposing that name plate functionality be added to ESO as an "OPTION". Players would have the ability to enable or disable this feature, which means if you hate nameplates and feel that it interferes with your ability to immerse yourself in the game, you can simply turn the nameplates off, and your gameplay experience will not change.

To those people who oppose nameplates because they feel if will disrupt PVP or give some kind of tactical advantage, I am proposing that restrictions be placed on name plates in pvp, and instead of showing a players name, it instead would show something generic like their faction, or rank, etc, similar to how GW2 and DAOC did it.

*Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and everyone should have the freedom to choose how they want to play the game. Please respect the fact that people want to play with name plates, and respect the fact that people do NOT want to play with name plates.

I think that this is interesting, though there should be an option to choose whether or not to see other's nameplates AND whether or not others can see your name plates.

Say it's nighttime in Cyrodiil, and everybody has nameplate functionality turned on. Your sneaking up on the enemy about to ambush them, when suddenly they see in big bright letters your faction/faction exclusive guild just floating around in the air. Your cover is blown! Only if there were some way to maintain stealthiness while still allowing players to see name plates!

Like maybe an option to turn off the display of your name plate.

When you sneak, the name-plate would dissapear, or at least fade.

Maybe even the name-plates would be disabled in cyrodil

Too easy. Name plates would only be static for friendlies, possibly add functionality to filter displayed plates based on guild, friend's, group, etc. For enemies, nameplates should be dynamic, and only show when the player is targeted. Obviously stealthed characters can't be targeted, so they would not show the name. If the concern is for sneaking around while not stealthed, well it's kinda late for that. enemy players already have a giant emblem appear above them when in the field of view, not even targeted.

Also obviously should be optional

I think the only fair way to implement this would be to have it as an option in which you have to turn on.
Then it only displays the name of the person you are currently looking at.

A stealthed persons name plate would not be visible as they aren't visible.

Since there is no mouse functionality, and the current tool tip display is horrible, I am all in favor of name plates. I was very surprised by there not being any and by the concern of others. In every game with plates I turn off all except enemy players and enemy NPCs. But, again, those are games with proper mouse overs and tool tips.

Even those who are not stealthed, you should not be able to see their name plate.
100% of the time you will notice a name plate before a character.

A name plate actively points out enemy players for you.
Its also completely unnecessary as you can just mouse over them and get all the information you need.

If you are not targeting them, then why would you need to know anything about them?

You can still notice any enemy player extremely easily when they are not stealthed. By simply having an enemy player within a certain range (which is quite generous) a giant emblem will pop up over their head signifying which enemy faction they belong to by simply being in the players field of view. Having a name plate populate when the enemy player is actually targeted would not make them any more easy to spot. I do understand your point though, and don't personally see a real need for enemy player nameplates. This isn't Dragon Ball Z, we don't spent 3 episodes on introductions, back story, and yelling. We strike first and ask questions never.

I think the biggest concern here for nameplates is in regards to allies though, which is something i fully support. I don't know how many times I would be questing with friends and have no idea if the person beside me in in my group, or being able to differentiate members of my group. It would also be great for character recognition overall. I remember one instance where I was wanting to trade some items with my brother, and we had to spend extra time describing unique features about each other in order to find each other AFTER already being in the same city, then after finding each other, the first question following was "Is that you?" A simple name plate would make the social aspects of the game more intuitive and easier to use in my opinion. I would be totally fine (and might even prefer) nameplates only for friendlies, and of course, make it optional.
