These are personality types used by psychologists. You will probably find traits of each for your character (and even yourselves) crossing over. For examples I have decided to use characters from the Lord of the Rings (well, there are nine personality types and nine members of the fellowship).

1. The Reformer- The principled idealistic type. These are ethical and conscientious, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are teachers and crusaders, always striving to improve things but afraid of making a mistake. Well-organised, orderly and fastidious, they try to maintain high standards but can slip into being critical and perfectionistic. They typically have problems with repressed anger and impatience. At their best: wise, discerning, realistic and noble.
e.g Aragorn

2. The Helper- The caring interpersonal type. These are empathetic, sincere and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering and people pleasing. They're driven by a need to be close to people and they often do things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems taking care of themselves and acknowledging their own needs. At their best: unselfish, altruistic and have an unconditional love for themselves and others.
e.g. Frodo

3. The Achiever- The adaptable, success orientated type. They are self-assured, attractive and charming. Ambitious, competent and energetic, they can also be status-conscious and highly driven for personal advancement. They are often concerned about their image and what people think of them. They typically have problems with workaholism and competitiveness. At their best: self-accepting, authentic and everything they seem to be.
e.g. Legolas

4. The Individualist. The romantic, introspective type, they tend to see themselves as (or even be) the 'tragic hero'. They are self aware, sensitive and reserved. They are self-revealing, emotionally honest and personal, but also moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also be disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. They typically have problems with self-indulgence and self-pity. At their best: inspired, highly creative and able to renew themselves.
e.g. Gimli

5. The Investigator- The intense cerebral type. They are alert, insightful and curious. They are able to concentrate on developing complex ideas and skills. Independent and innovative, they can become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs. They become detached, yet high-strung and intense. They typically have problems with isolation, eccentricity and nihilism. At their best: Visionary pioneers ahead of their time, able to see the world in a new way.
e.g. Gandalf

6. The Loyalist- The committed, security orientated type. They re reliable, hard-working and responsible but they can also be defensive, evasive and highly anxious- running on stress. They are often cautious and indecisive but can also be reactive, defiant and rebellious. They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. At their best: stable, self-confident and reliant, courageously supporting the weak and powerless.
e.g. Sam

7. The Enthusiast- The busy productive type. They are versatile, optimistic and spontaneous. Playful, high spirited and practical, they can also be overextended, scattered and undisciplined. They constantly seek new and exciting experiences but they become distracted and exhausted by staying on the go. They typically have problems with superficiality and impulsiveness. At their best: focus on worthwhile goals, becoming joyous highly accomplished and full of gratitude.
e.g. Pippin

8. The Challenger- The powerful, dominating type. They are self confident, strong and assertive. Protective, resourceful and decisive they can also be proud and domineering. They feel that they must control the environment, often becoming confrontational and intimidating. They typically have problems with allowing themselves to be close to others. At their best: self-mastering, they use their strengths to improve others' lives, becoming heroic and magnanimous.
e.g. Boromir

9. The Peacemaker- The easygoing, self effacing type. They are accepting, trusting and stable. They are good-natured, kind and supportive but can also be too willing to go along with others in order to keep the peace. They want everything to be without conflict but can tend to be complacent and minimize anything upsetting. At their best: indomitable and all embracing, they are able to bring people together and heal conflicts.
e.g. Merry
